My New Online Course: The Starlet Suit Jacket! (Plus 50%)

Readers, great news! My new online course with Craftsy released yesterday. It's called Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit Jacket, and it's the follow-up to my Bombshell dress class. As you may guess from the title, this one is tailoring focused.

A few fun facts:
1. It includes a downloadable pattern designed by moi, in sizes 2-24 (Bust sizes 32" to 54"). Bonus skirt included!
2. The pattern was inspired by the movie Captain America. (Now, there's a sentence I never thought I'd write.)
3.You can watch the trailer here.
4. The course has two tracks: fusible tailoring and hand tailoring. Bound buttonholes and welt pockets are optional add-ons.
5. I made not one, not two, but THREE suits to prep for this course. I will show you garment details in coming posts.
6. You can take the course at your own pace and once you sign up, you always have access to it.
7. And, most importantly, you can get 50% off the course price by using this link.

Please let me know if you have questions!

  2. I am in LOVE with the green suit you have made for this course!
How would the course be for a beginner? I'm not a very experienced sewist at all but I'd love a suit like this.

  3. Oh wow such a lovely jacket, very tempted to do this course! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.com/

  4. I booked it without blinking as soon as I got the email from craftsy. I've gone through the course already, and I am so excited by what I am learning.

  5. Word pretty much spread like wild fire yesterday. My blog feeder is filled with posts of people expressing excitement over signing up for this course. You have hit a soft spot in my heart with this course, so I absolutely signed up as well!

  6. I love the look of this jacket! The one with the black trim is especially sharp looking.

I'm thinking of signing up to learn the tailoring techniques, but I'm wondering if this course addresses fitting the pattern?

  7. So excited for this course! I signed up yesterday and it will be my first time using a Craftsy Workshop.

  8. I bought it directly! I'm excited to watch :D

  9. I squealed when I saw this as the desktop of my computer is a screenshot of some vintage suits just like this! I am all signed up and ready to learn. I still have to get round to making my bombshell dress (*though I did make the corpse bride wedding dress from it so thats a start!)

  10. I love, love, love this pattern!

I watched the first two videos, and was really impressed -- but did I miss it or is there not any instruction to cut the sleeve out of the fashion fabric (I was looking for it to see if it was a one-piece or a two-piece sleeve). I don't know if it's possible to do a quick edit, but thought you might like to know....

  11. Oh I am so IN! I was planning to draft a little jacket like this but that was probably a bit ambitious and I'd LOVE to take one of your courses so this is PERFECT!! Really excited about doing this. It's going to be my little treat to myself once I've finished the paper I'm writing... xx

  12. Miss Rosie Beau: if you've sewn a few garments, you should be ready to tackle the fusible track of this course.

Anonymous, thank you! I've asked the Craftsy folks to fix the sleeve thing.

  13. Fabulous suit! And I like it even more since you say it was inspired by Captain America, 'cause I'm a dork. My sewing skills are probably not up to this course, but I'd still love to take it!

  14. I'm signed up!! :) Love the jacket!

  15. It looks gorgeous Gertie! Can't wait to settle in on this course. The Bombshell Dress course was life-changing.

  16. I signed up for the course! I'm debating which size to cut on the coat. I guess i should muslin it- as likely i should cut a size that fits the shoulders/waist and adjust for the bust. My problem though is I hate FBA as they add length and width to the waist. I can't wait to make my first jacket though!

  17. How long will the class stay at 50%? I signed up for your bombshell dress and I am enjoying watching it right now, and the suit looks great. Thanks!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have wanted a suit very much like this ever since watching "The Women." I can't wait to start!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm already signed up!!! I got the email and as it was pay day today I'm now signed up. Can't wait to make a start, I even have some fabric that I hope would work...

  20. I *love* it so much! But right now I'm reluctant to spend even the $40 because I'm not working because of school so I don't know when I'll be working next or how much I'll be making. How long will the discount link be valid? If it's only for a few weeks or a month I may just go ahead and purchase the course and make this my summer sewing project once I've made enough bank to purchase the supplies!

  21. Gertie! how did you read my mind? I've been after a tailoring course for ages!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cool!

Now what link can I click to have someone make it for me!?! It's BEAUTIFUL! (and I am woefully untalented)

  23. These are so beautiful and I really love the yellow dress! The color looks great on you!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I absolutely ADORE this suit! It's a great style - think I'll take the class!

  25. Gretchen, I have never in my 40+ years of sewing taken a sewing class, but I am so excited about your class. As soon as I saw the beautiful yellow suit in your post, I signed up. Thank you so much for enticing me!

  26. Wow! This is a beautiful jacket. I am a beginner so might want to make a few more projects before tackling this course. When I am ready I will certainly sign up. I would like to thank you for writing this blog. I've never had real life sewing lessons and your blog gives me so much help and encouragement.

  27. Hi Gertie!

Definitely interested in the course (that jacket is so CUTE). How long will the 50% deal last? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I loved the wardrobe from the new Captain America movie. I love even more that you were inspired by it, and that you went up to size 54"! It's a great jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi! Congrats on the new course! I bought the Bombshell dress one and thought it was very well done so it was easy to justify purchasing this one too. YOu are a great teacher!

    ReplyDelete
  30. This looks SO GREAT. I really want to do it, though my broke graduate student status might be a serious hindrance. How long will the 50% discount offer last? (Mind, it sounds totally worth it even at full price; I'm just poor as a church mouse.)

Also, does the course cover fitting at all? I would have to do a substantial FBA and probably also shorten the waist length (I'm very high-waisted; I always end up having to do this on patterns). Those are things that drastically change a pattern, and can change how lapels lie and so forth - does the course cover things like that? It would be so great if it did...

  31. I signed up for this course, and I'm so excited! It's my first class with Craftsy. The jacket is so stunning, and with the deal I just couldn't resist.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Woohoo! I am really excited for the hand tailoring portion. I have wanted to work on those skills for a while now. See you in class!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh oh oh! I'm terribly excited for this! The jacket looks darling! What a lovely! I'll be purchasing this one very soon!

  34. Don't we all wish we lived in NYC so we could take classes from Gretchen in person? How fabulous would that be?! This online Craftsy class is the next best thing. I signed up immediately! It's my very first online sewing course and I'm so excited to make the Starlet Suit! I'm SO impressed with the quality of the program too. Thank you so much Gertie for doing what you do. You are an inspiration for all of us.

  36. Wow, that's gorgeous! What are the options available for the hearing impaired? I don't see anything on Craftsy about captioning.

  37. Excited for the course and tailoring techniques! Gretchen, you are a genius! I loved your bombshell dress course SO MUCH! Even though I am not 100% this jacket will flatter my figure, I'll give it a shot. Maybe some modifications will improve its look on me ;)

  38. N to the ICE! Made some jackets like that too :)

  39. I very much want to sign up for this course. I've been wanting to take a class of yours and the bombshell dress was a bit too daring for this grandma. If I sign up now I can do the sewing on my own timetable, correct? I have commitments and can't start it right away, but I don't want to miss it! (or miss the 1/2 price, lol)

  42. I signed up as well. Now I have to finish off a couple of things before I dive in.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, this looks awesome Gertie! I worry I am not advanced enough, sewing wise, to do this, but I am so thrilled this is sized through a 54 bust. I might just have to bite the bullet even if I'm not ready to do it until later in the year.

  44. I am very exited for this. I loved the Bombshell dress course and I learned so much. I feel like I went from novice to expert.

  45. Wonderful! When I've finished the bombshell dress I might give this a try! I still haven't selected the fabric I want for the dress so it may take some time still. *s*

I'm extremely disappointed that I don't even have access to it!
