Readers, I have a favor to ask you. I hate to do this sort of thing, so I'm going to get it over with as quickly as possible. It's come to my attention that the major book retailers are looking for a high number of Twitter followers to determine if they carry a book or not. (You can probably see where this is going, right?) Anyway, I'm not going to do some giveaway where you have to jump through 5 hoops to enter (though there are some great giveaways coming up!), I'm just going to politely ask you if you would consider following me on Twitter if you don't already. Just click here to get to my profile page, or look me up as @SewGertieSew.
Thank you for your support, dear readers, and we'll be back to your scheduled sewing content tomorrow.
Done!
ReplyDeleteAlready following. All the best.
ReplyDeletenot a huge user of Twitter but if it'll help! You now have another follower :)
ReplyDelete(I dont understand the correlation between Twitter followers and book sales though! Surely the number of hits on your blog would be a better indication... But that's just my opinion and I'm not a book retailer!!!)
I would but I don't have a twitter acount, sorry! Good luck though! X
ReplyDeleteDone! If you wanna follow me back that'd be pretty cool :)
ReplyDelete@katezat
Done!! I hope it helps :)
ReplyDeleteI already follow you, but what is the world coming to when success comes down to are you popular on the internet? :( Not that you have to worry about internet popularity! Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteAlready following! I'll happily retweet as well. :) I can't wait to buy your book.
ReplyDeletehoops, we all have to jump through hoops...the new world! Anyway, did it and best of luck. Tell the publishers that I, and probably many of your blog readers, would buy the book with or without making bird noises!
ReplyDeletesorry, I hit the button prematurely and ended up being anonymous, which I am not. Unfortunately the new "proving I am not a robot" verification process is becoming tiresome and I rarely post comments any more, my own little rebellion. I turned the feature off on my blog, but I have very little traffic.
ReplyDeleteWas already happily following you;o) clearly those book retailers don't have a clue about how social media work. Having followers doesn't actually mean these people are reading what the person has to say. Of course you may argue at least some people went through the trouble so it must be worth it. Anyhow...just my reflections on social media in general and how quantitative measurement is not always a clear indicator of "success". I hope they all carry your book!
ReplyDeleteFollowing now. Can't wait for the book!
ReplyDeleteAlready a follower!
ReplyDeleteAlready follow you. Good Luck
ReplyDeleteDone! I don't do twitter but will for you!
ReplyDeleteHi Gertie, more then happy to follow you, really looking forward to your book launch. Will you be having a book signing in NYC?
ReplyDeleteKristaNYC
That's the most stupid I've heard in a long time! I don't have Twitter or my own blog. I don't even have Facebook (shocker, I know), but I buy books all the time! I follow your blog religiously and I would love to preorder your book if it were at all possible. (Hope you tell them how cheap their marketing is for your book is since you have done it already!)
ReplyDeleteDespite this, I figure that since you go to all the trouble with bogging and doing tutorials (and being super nice), I will get a Twitter acount, just for your tweets. Now, if that isn't showing interest for what you have to say (and sell), I don't what is. Tell your publishers that!!
Had to open a twitter account but I'm following now (not sure I understand twitter though!)
ReplyDeleteAlready a follower!!! I would gladly jump through 5 hoops to make sure I could get my hands on the book in the Fall!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is just ridiculous of them. I don't have a Twitter account and don't have time to keep up with one anyway, so I won't be following you there, but I am a loyal (albiet quiet) follower and fan of your blog. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on your book as well and would search high and low for it if the big stores won't carry it.
ReplyDeleteShame on them for caring more about numbers of followers (who may or may not even truely follow) over talent and creativity.
Sorry for the brief rant, Gertie. I am passionate about the growing need for online social networking at the expense of face-to-face relationships and the oversight of talent that can happen online.
Thank you for what you do and good luck!
I have a twitter account for something I belong to in my village, I have followed you on that. Hope that's ok, I don't use it much x
ReplyDeleteDone--though I was sure I already followed you. (Perhaps I mixed up you and Jeff, who I did already follow;)
ReplyDeleteHave been following you for ages. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAlready following, but appreciating being able to find more sewists on twitter through your post! (although, tricky to figure out the right names--I'm @bydaiyami for sewing)
ReplyDelete(A couple of authors who really do a lot with twitter are @maureenjohnson and @jenniferweiner . It's pretty interesting interaction.)
Seems silly for them to use Twitter followers to determine bookstore buys, but happy to support you and your book! I admire how straightforward you're being about it, no shame in that certainly.
ReplyDeleteGertie, I don't do twitter or face book or anything (don't know why actually, something to do with being time poor and it kind of reminding me of high school clique - type behaviour) Anyway, my own weird hangups aside, I'm gonna follow you on twitter because I think you're AWESOME, and I'm really looking forward to seeing your book. Good lkuck and thanks for all the inspiration, you're a gem!
ReplyDeleteI'm no a fan of Twitter of facebook but I've signed up just to follow you. You totally deserve it. I guess for all sewing knowledge you share I can make an effort.
ReplyDeleteFollowing now! @readfreely
ReplyDeletedon't tweet, but joined to support you on this endeavor. Best to you!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't tell whether the post went through. i don't tweet but joined you on twitter. Best wishes.

ReplyDeleteThat's crazy! They should base it on there own knowledge that by looking at your book that it's worth selling not on how many followers on twitter u have . This makes me want to rip out my hair to represent the insanity of having to increase followers on twitter on not on the merits of the book it's self .
ReplyDeleteEither way gertie I'm sore it will be a fantastic book which I would aim to buy in the uk if it comes here or even source it from America x
Sorry i do not twitter the info you have on your site love it and is a tresure too me and think of you and i too will be looking at your book someday at the book store thanks so much for your art designs and knowledge that you pass on too us renee by for now
ReplyDeleteI don't have twitter or facebook either. or pintrest. Still rooting for you though.
ReplyDeleteYes it is crazy if they are really going in this direction. Along with a few other adjectives. But based on what I've seen in the chain book stores, they follow the latest "hot trend". Hence the current plethora of sewing/quilting/knitting books, but a good embroidery book is nearly impossible to find, unless you want to embroider cute felt creatures. Being able to pick the good books would require hiring people who can do more than look at numbers.
The American Sewing Guild already follows you on Twitter!
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you, Gertie!
We'd be thrilled to bits if you followed us back:)
I don't use Twitter very much, but I did it for you!
ReplyDeleteAbbie
I don't have a twitter account, but hey for you and all the joy you bring to us all not a problem. Fingers crossed for you.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for Twitter just to follow you. Hope this helps you out. I'm taking your classes on Craftsy and you are certainly helping me out so I thought it was only fair to try and do the same for you.
ReplyDeleteJust like Cathy, I signed up on Twitter just so I can follow you (and I think I'll leave it at that, being shy...). Good luck!
ReplyDeleteFollowing you now....
ReplyDeleteSay, Would you mind following me back?
@patternfitting
Thanks!
Done. Good Luck and can't wait for the book!
ReplyDeleteI did not have an account, but I created a Twitter account tonight just for you because I'm a great fan of yours! I can't wait for your book. Good Luck and God Bless!

I've been avoiding Twitter for ages, but for you? I join.
ReplyDeletewhat a dreadful thing to base a do/don't publishing deal!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry, but I have no twitter account and can't help. Love the blog, though!
How can we support you in other non-Twitter ways? I am not looking to add MORE social media at this point but would be irritated if that made it harder for me to find your book. ;) k.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with all your other followers. Twitter is not an indication that serious (and not so serious) sewers will buy your sewing book! And like many of your fans who've posted, I will follow you on Twitter because you asked and we adore you. I would think, like others who've posted, that blog activity/followers/posts would be a better indication. Sewers don't have time to tweet! Lastly, please Gertie give us a book update! I would love to pr-eorder one too!
ReplyDeleteessalb IIAlready following so I'm going to give a little retweet. Not that I have many followers...
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy! I don't look at Twitter much because I prefer to read something with more substance - like your book and this blog. However, I have already followed you on Twitter and wish you all the best with your book. I will definitely be buying a copy.
ReplyDeleteOh, the hoops publishers and authors have to jump through to convince the bookseller giants. No point bemoaning a lost world of more civilised publishing - these things are here to stay. I'm following you on Twitter!
ReplyDeleteI created a Twitter account just to help out...even blundered through my first tweet for the BEST sewing instructor in the world. Now, down to business. When the book comes out, how do I get a signed copy? I'll gladly pay extra and shipping!!!
ReplyDeleteFrank
anything for you girl!
ReplyDeletei don't twitter [the thought of being a twit isn't comfortable]
ReplyDelete- do hope my publisher doesn't expect me to take it up!
I created a twitter account too!
ReplyDeleteWhy Not...unless I really do have to create a blog or some such interesting thing. Maybe someday...
Good Luck Gertie!
Done too... I'm a french reader (and think my english is not good at all !). I came every day since months, but I have never left a comment ! That's done now, and hope it will help for your book !
ReplyDeleteI followed you on twitter. I don't actually ever use twitter, or read the stream- so don't tell the retailers that!
ReplyDeleteBut I'd love to be able to get your book!
PS- I know it sucks but you can actually also buy twitter followers. Which, in this case would be for a very good cause.
ReplyDeleteI think $35 might buy you 500. I'm sure we would all support your need to do it! .
Sorry I don't use Twitter. Tell the bookers to look at your blog for followers instead. I love your blog and I just signed up for your Starlet Suit Jacket Course. I'm looking forward to your book release this fall.
ReplyDeleteDone and Done.
