It's come to my attention that the major book retailers are looking for a high number of Twitter followers to determine if they carry a book or not. (You can probably see where this is going, right?) Anyway, I'm not going to do some giveaway where you have to jump through 5 hoops to enter (though there

ReplyDelete(I dont understand the correlation between Twitter followers and book sales though! Surely the number of hits on your blog would be a better indication... But that's just my opinion and I'm not a book retailer!!!)

Unfortunately the new "proving I am not a robot" verification process is becoming tiresome and I rarely post comments any more, my own little rebellion. I turned the feature off on my blog, but I have very little traffic.
ReplyDeleteWas already happily following you;o) clearly those book retailers don't have a clue about how social media work. Having followers doesn't actually mean these people are reading what the person has to say. Of course you may argue at least some people went through the trouble so it must be worth it. Anyhow...just my reflections on social media in general and how quantitative measurement is not always a clear indicator of "success". I hope they all carry your book!

That's the most stupid I've heard in a long time! I don't have Twitter or my own blog. I don't even have Facebook (shocker, I know), but I buy books all the time! I follow your blog religiously and I would love to preorder your book if it were at all possible. (Hope you tell them how cheap their marketing is for your book is since you have done it already!)

I don't have a Twitter account and don't have time to keep up with one anyway, so I won't be following you there, but I am a loyal (albiet quiet) follower and fan of your blog. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on your book as well and would search high and low for it if the big stores won't carry it.

Sorry for the brief rant, Gertie. I am passionate about the growing need for online social networking at the expense of face-to-face relationships and the oversight of talent that can happen online.

Seems silly for them to use Twitter followers to determine bookstore buys, but happy to support you and your book! I admire how straightforward you're being about it, no shame in that certainly.

ReplyDeleteThat's crazy! They should base it on there own knowledge that by looking at your book that it's worth selling not on how many followers on twitter u have . This makes me want to rip out my hair to represent the insanity of having to increase followers on twitter on not on the merits of the book it's self .

ReplyDeleteYes it is crazy if they are really going in this direction. Along with a few other adjectives. But based on what I've seen in the chain book stores, they follow the latest "hot trend". Hence the current plethora of sewing/quilting/knitting books, but a good embroidery book is nearly impossible to find, unless you want to embroider cute felt creatures. Being able to pick the good books would require hiring people who can do more than look at numbers.
The American Sewing Guild already follows you on Twitter!

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with all your other followers. Twitter is not an indication that serious (and not so serious) sewers will buy your sewing book! And like many of your fans who've posted, I will follow you on Twitter because you asked and we adore you. I would think, like others who've posted, that blog activity/followers/posts would be a better indication. Sewers don't have time to tweet! Lastly, please Gertie give us a book update! I would love to pr-eorder one too!
