I am a huge fan of the show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and I'm not embarrased to admit it. MLP was awesome when I was a kid, and it's awesome now. (Fun fact: did you know the new show has a whole following of dudes who call themselves bronies? It's true. Female fans are supposedly called 'pegasisters', which bothers me to no end. If the male fans are bronies, wouldn't the female fans just be . . . ponies? But I digress.)
There's a really amazing sewing scene in the episode "Suited for Success" (see the whole episode here). I think any seamstress will be able to relate to Rarity's attempts to please her friends while making five custom gowns. The vague feedback ("It needs to be about 20 percent cooler") is priceless. And of course Rarity has a cat; we all know sewers are cat people.
Enjoy!
NO WAY!!!! My daughter and I marvel at the following this show has among people who are... let's say... a more mature demographic than the target. Okay, so I've seen a couple of episodes of this show in my day, and they really do a great job on the stories. Okay, okay... I may watch this one...
ReplyDeleteI made my four-year-old MLP fan a Twilight Sparkle costume for Halloween. She told me that I could go as Rarity — because Rarity makes clothes, just like I do! We watch a lot of MLP at our house... Here's my mini-Twilight Sparkle: http://mybeaubaby.blogspot.com/2012/10/twilight-sparkle-preview.html
ReplyDeleteThat costume is AMAZING.
DeleteThat is SICK in the best possible way. Please don't let my kids see that....
DeleteSweet!
DeleteThanks! Rainbow Dash is my favorite because she's not traditionally feminine, like all the other ponies (OK, Apple Jack excluded) — it took weeks to convince my kid that Rainbow Dash is a girl, and we are not a pink-is-for-girls, math-is-for-boys family. Rainbow Dash is kinda lazy, yet ultra-competitive, slightly husky-voiced pegasus with a rainbow mane and tail (wink?). I love her.
DeleteLove that the tune is a play on Sondheim's "Putting it Together"... Priceless.

DeleteYes! Musical theater plus ponies plus sewing!!!
DeleteMy daughter loves MLP too and has gotten me hooked on it...naturally my fav Rarity too! It's funny how we as adults tend to associate more with characters that represent us in some way. But, MLP ROCKS!, and that is all that matters. Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteFluttershy is actually my fave. Shhh, don't tell Rarity.
DeleteThey all are a fave in some way, let's face it! :D
DeleteSO TRUE.
DeleteToo sweet! That captures exactly how I feel today...
ReplyDeleteHaha, I love how the lession of this episode is basically: let the designer design and trust her/his taste. :P
ReplyDeleteAs a librarian by day and a dressmaker by night, Twinkle Sparkle and Rarity are totally my home girls. This Professional Assessment of Twilight Sparkle as a Librarian, made me so happy (librarians love assessment). http://www.neatorama.com/2012/08/14/A-Professional-Assessment-of-Twilight-Sparkle-as-a-Librarian
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen My Little Pony in years.....so cute! I see the toys all the time, but not cartoons :)
ReplyDeleteWe have the same phenomenon in Sweden too! My 17-year old son is a HUGE fan of MLP :-)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, my son made me take the pony personality test. I think I actually turned out to be Rarity, haha!
http://www.bronyland.com/pony-personality-test/
My 9 year old daughter and I attended a MLP convention a few weeks ago with about 2000 assorted young men and woman--we knew what to expect, she considers herself a brony rather than a kid who likes MLP 8-)And there's been some disagreement over Pegasisters, generally Brony is acceptable to use for both men and woman.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! Good to know I'm not the only one who dislikes the term. I think my real problem is that it places women on the fringes of a fan subculture, when the show itself is entirely female-driven.
DeleteI love that episode - what lessons we can learn from trying to please too much!! I am really pleased that my little son enjoys it so much too. Lily. xxx
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite "Wait Wait!" episodes was former President Clinton being asked - and answering ALL correctly - questions about MLP. Anyboy can be a brony! (Thanks for posting the episode, too, it was adorable!)
ReplyDeleteMy four-year-old niece loves Rarity because, "she sews like you do, Aunt Laura!"
ReplyDeleteYes! I watched both seasons on netflix while working on a dress and it always make me super happy when Rarity and I were sewing at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI love the little pony dress forms! Too cute! I loved MLP as a kid and my parents still have tons of VHS tapes of MLP that I made them keep.
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the reasons Rarity is my favorite! I'm going to try to sew plush versions of Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie for my daughter this Christmas, it should be a fun project to try to develop a pattern for this.
ReplyDeleteAh, a seamstress's life is so underappreciated ... too much to do, not enough time, too little pay. Story of our lives! I'm stressed just watching Rarity sing about it. Hey, how does SHE have time to sing??
ReplyDeleteI had to watch that with my kids. They LOVED that episode. And immediately followed up with "Mooooooooom, can you make me a dress Just Like [insert pony name]??????? PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAASE?????"
ReplyDeletehey, watch it, I sew and have for most of my life, but no cats, ever. Except for a couple feral cats we let loose on the farm to catch mice. They run away from humans and it was thought that life here was better than on the mean city streets. But no cats in the house, ever.
ReplyDeleteI guess my almost 3 year old is a bronie! He loves the show, so we all watch it. I even had to buy a couple of DVDs of it this summer when we were on our 3 1/2 week road trip because he couldn't live without it! I had an extensive collection of MLPs that we gave to my sister when my girls stopped playing with them (some were mine from back in the day and some were newer ones). If I had known the boy would love them so much I would have hung on to them longer.
ReplyDeleteI'm debating whether "pegasister" is more disturbing than "anchorette" - a term my boyfriend's father used on his recent visit to describe a female news anchor... But *I* digress! I'll have to revisit MLP - this is pretty hilarious.
ReplyDeleteAs a non MLP watcher, I can't help but notice that these ponies gad about in the nude all the time anywya, and Rarity sews in the nude, which is funny because it is much easier to sew in your underwear so you can do lots of try ons. But ponies in dresses, meh. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy household is more of a Monster High, Gravity Falls, & Lalaloopsy place.
ReplyDeleteHow about "Chonies"? "Honies"?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Sewing Scenes, I was just reading The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan and there is a sewing scene in it that made me think of your posts. Admittedly it is quilting, not apparel; Sewing blankets together to construct a hot-air balloon to escape Zombies, but hey...sewing is sewing, right? Score one for the Seamstresses who are automatically better prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse!
For an ultimate frisbee tournament, my (adult, co-ed) team was My Little Pony themed. I refashioned pjs into pony costumes. We have a couple of really tall guys on the team, and I made a giant Pinkie Pie costume to fit them... amazing.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I forgot to say that our frisbee jerseys had a little Scootaloo on them. She was our mascot!
DeleteJajajaj yes! My daughter and I see this show everyday here in Dominican Republic! I think its hilarious even flutter shy had something to say :0)
ReplyDeleteOMGosh that was super cute!
ReplyDeleteI ADORE MLP! I'm dreaming up a Pinkie Pie Halloween costume right now. Por boyfriend deals with 'the Art of the Dress' more than he thinks is fair. Tough. I know how Rarity feels.
ReplyDeleteI love My Little Ponies... !! Think I am going to make my own version of the rainbow dress :) Cute!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part is the pony shaped (naturally) dress forms.
ReplyDeleteAmazing to view as a fashion student!!
ReplyDeleteThis was pretty much my theme song leading up to NYCC with three cosplays to complete for myself and a friend. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who enjoys ponies and sewing. I'll stick to referring to the entire fandom (male and female) as "bronies," though. "Suited for Success" is definitely one of my favorite episodes, too. (And Fluttershy's my favorite too!)
ReplyDeleteI am a little behind on catching up with my blogs and as I clicked on this my son came down and proceeded to tell me about the episode. He is 18, I have a daughter 16 they both love MLP and consider themselves Bronies. Are far as they are concerned people who call them-self pegasisters do so just to defind their gender. I took my daughter to a Brony meet-up here in the uk it was girls of her age then 14-17 but mostly college lads 17-20, (we stayed of course) but it was real fun. Not often you see lads of that age so happy because they won a MLP skipping rope, to watch a 6ft lad with a youngsters skipping rope trying to skip, it is so funny and yet very surreal.
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how many times I played that song while making Pinkie Pie's GGG gown for my daughter for Halloween last year. Then she talked me into making Rarity's gown for an actual Grand Galloping Gala event at a convention in Tampa. What can I say, I've loved MLP since I was a little girl and now we watch it together. Here is her gown (Lauren Faust herself faved it!!) http://fav.me/d4edlte and her is my 1874 inspired version of Rarity's http://fav.me/d548hat
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Love that you watch MLP also. I convinced my 2 year old daughter to watch it so that I could enjoy it as well. I loved this particular episode! And I agree with you, I don't want to be called a pegasister. Too complicated. I'm a pony lover all the way!
ReplyDelete-Bethany
I don't normally drop links like this, but I just drew up some MLP pumpkin carving patterns last week and posted them today. :D

Oh man, when I saw the title of this post, I just *knew* you'd mean that scene. It made my cry the first time I saw it, not even kidding. Rarity is trying so hard to make something wonderful for her friends, and at first they really don't seem to understand how much time, effort, and passion she's put into it, how much of *herself* she's put into each dress. The end of the episode made it all worth it, but ugh, man, that first sequence just made me want to hug her.
ReplyDeleteDude, it has to be a sign of the impending apocalypse when a 40+ mom of 2 is feeling super-simpatico with the sewing dilemmas of a cartoon pony on a Sunday morning. Just sayin'... but that was really epic.
ReplyDeleteI love MLP Friendship is Magic. I collect the ponies too! Rarity and Fluttershy are my favorites!
ReplyDeleteI freely admit that I wouldn't watch it if it weren't for my four-year-old niece. She's in love. And her love of MLP is why early this year, I found myself recurling her Rarity figure's hair so that it looked "just like" Rarity's hair on TV.
