The Daily Dress: Reese Witherspoon in Jason Wu

Two Reese Witherspoon dresses in a row? Why not! Last night was the premiere of Water for Elephants, which I'm getting pretty excited to see (if only for the clothes). Reese wore a fall 2011 Jason Wu dress, which I think is notable for both its retro silhouette and the clever use of Chantilly applique.

One question, though: what's going on with the hem?

Here it is on the runway.
And here it is on Ms. Witherspoon, with a sort of bubble-hem effect. What's up with that?
P.S. True confession time: After the first Twilight film released, I had a mad crush on Robert Pattinson. That seems to have cleared up, thank goodness.

  2. Pretty dress. I'm thinking the bubble hem on Witherspoon was the solution to a temporary hem since most red carpet dresses are borrowed, and she's just not tall enough for the hem to hit above the knee like it does on the runway model. I don't care for the look of it as much, but it's a good solution (if that is the reason behind it).

  3. I had just reached my limit for useful thinking here at work and thought I would check for a daily dress...and, jackpot!

I love the Jason Wu dress. I even like the undulating bubble hem effect that follows the bottom line of the applique, it's just that it cut off the bottom of the beautiful lace. Seems to me they could have shown a little less knee and played up the bottom of the applique a little more by adding another 1/2 to 1 inch to the hemline. Maybe that length wasn't flattering to RW?

    Loving the Daily Dress, Gertie.

  4. I love the Chantilly applique! So pretty.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of bubble hems either. I agree though, good solution.

  5. I love that dress, the lace is so pretty. The runway hems looks quite a bit better though than the version Reese wore. :]

  6. Such clever clever use of the lace on this dress, but yes what is with the hem? Still, even with the bubble hem, I think it's positively darling. I especially love the neckline, such a lovely cut.

I must admit a strange crush on Robert Pattinson as well, if only because he was the infamous Edward. Oh my gosh, I had the "crazies" after reading such silly books. It was finally put in real perspective after a friend of mine who is a violinist decided to nickname her violin "Edward." You know, because she plays him everyday...Ha ha ha!

  7. Love the dress - had a crush om R.P. too - but I'm too old for him anyway... On the other hand - if Reese Witherspoon can date so could I (agewise... not lookwise... I wish LOL)

  8. I'm guessing borrowed and it's a temporary hem solution. It spoils the dress though. Tricky one to shorten, even permanently. It would need the lace re-positioned, even if it was taken up from the waist. I'd rather she'd let it be longer on her, or just picked another frock.

That is one strained, teeth-gritted expression on her face in the last pic though!

  10. I'm going with the dress being a bit too long and it was a temporary hem. I like how it fits her much better than the runway model, but I don't love the bubble skirt look.

  11. I'm not a fan of the bubble hem either, but I adore the runway version of that dress.

  12. Yeah, the dress is not supposed to have the bubble hem, it's just to short for Reece and that's how they fixed it. I like the runway version much better, but it's a super cute dress.

  14. It's a pretty dress but too formal and too retro for Reese. Planted there with her hands on her hips, she looks overdressed -- a casual girl styled way too "fancy." I don't know how tall she is but the dress looks too short on her. I don't mind the hem, however.

  15. I actually much prefer the bubble hem - the model looks like she's wearing a skirt made of cardboard, at least the bubble gives it a bit of ruffle and drape.

  16. Back to the jumpsuit/pajamas things -- and pardon my bluntness, but: how does one use the rest room? It would drive me nuts to have to take off that whole thing every time. Forget it!

  17. I'm loving the daily dress feature, Gertie!

I loved the use of lace on this dress, but I don't think either the bubble hem or the stiff looking runway hem are perfect.

As for the green Atonement dress, I randomly saw part of the movie over the weekend. It looks so much more elegant in motion and from the back. Although I don't love the front.

  18. I love that dress, even with Reese's hem change, but I wish she'd worn it with different heels. Maybe a high, black velvet pair?
