My New Pattern Line with Butterick!

Holy cow, readers. What a day. My book is making its way into your homes, and now another big arrival: the first two designs in my new pattern line with Butterick! I haven't uttered a peep about this, and it's been quite difficult.

I became friends with the folks at Butterick/Mccalls/Vogue earlier this year after they featured my blog in Vogue Patterns Magazine. Ever since doing the patterns for my book, I wanted to do more designs and Butterick was totally game, signing me up for two designs a season. And now the first two are out!

The first is B5814, and I'm so excited that it made the cover of the pattern catalog! I presented this design as a "draped wiggle dress." It has tiny raglan sleeves, a surplice boned bodice, and a double drape on the sarong-style skirt.

Didn't they do an amazing job on the styling and photography?

The second design, B5824, is a New Look inspired coat.

It has a dramatic shawl collar, slim kimono sleeves, and a gored circle skirt.

The cool part was that I got to draft the patterns and make the samples myself. (Well, actually I had a LOT of help from my friend Fleur.) And my friend and illustrator of my book, Sun Young Park, made me a little logo. Then everything went to Butterick, where it was made into a beautiful product by the pros there. Thank you to all the many, many people who made this happen!

The great news is that both patterns are on sale for $2.88 until tomorrow. I hope you love them! I'm hard at work on the next season now; more to come on that.

  44. Such fantastic news!!! Congratulations, the designs
are gorgeous. I love the coat but too afraid of kimono sleeves=gussets!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There are no gussets!!! They're slim at the bottom, but slightly roomy in under the arm, since the coat is meant to be worn with garments underneath.

  45. I'm so excited for you! Guess I'll have to head over to Butterick tonight! You have made yourself into such a success with your talents,

I wish I had the focus to do somthing like this. Alas, I'm currently getting ready to decorate a wedding cake for the long weekend, and still need to clean up the stuff from cutting out a dress on Monday night. But I got tired and went and decorated a spare bedroom instead.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I really need the dress pattern! Can you tell me if it will be available in the UK or if there is any other site I could try to get it from? Shipping on that site is coming in at $15 which is ridiculous for ONE pattern! Thanks.

    1. Tell me about it! both patterns shipping comes in at $25 dollars to the UK! xxx

      Delete
    2. Hi ladies! They will hopefully be available on sewingpatterns.eu. That's the only source I know of. If you have sewing friends nearby, maybe you can place a group order at butterick.com? Sorry, that shipping is crazy!

      Delete
    3. Hi,
I'm in the UK and ordered them both yesterday - the shipping was $25 but it stayed at $25 for up to 8 patterns and as they were on sale at $2.88 each I got 7 patterns (including the fab Gertie ones!) for less than £30 including shipping from the USA; I think that's a pretty good deal as my local fabric shop sells bog standard patterns by the major companies at £9 a pop! :) Not sure if the sale is still on today though...

    4. Thank you Gertie, that's great! My sewing group will be so pleased :D That is actually great value Good Fruit! Thank you xxx

  55. This is fantastic news, Gertie! Congratulations! I shall have to check them out next time I'm at the fabric store. ;)

  56. YOU GO GIRL!!!! How thrilling and I love the new patterns.

If your jacket pattern had been available for the "Lady Gray" sew-along I would have chosen that instead of the Butterick 5401 I made. Now I can purchase this pattern and make a nice "swing" coat. The dress is really sweet as well.

My Mom ordered your book for me off of my Amazon wishlist and I am hoping to see that sometime soon!!!

Wishing you success in your sewing adventures!!!

  57. WOW this is a big deal! Congrats! And Butterick is to be commended on their beautiful styling of your pattern photos.. a million times better than wacky model poses!

  67. I'm just waiting for my book to be delivered! Oh dear -- it looks like I'm going to have to make a coat. Both designs are great, but....ooooh, that coat!!!

Those of us who have followed your blog through the Vogue book years and beyond are so thrilled to see how your talent is being recognized, and how you're able to use your dreams and passion to become your own brand. You have a lot of sewers you've never met cheering your progress!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Congratulations, Gertie!! That's magnificent news! I love Butterick patterns and will look forward to your designs every season. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Gertie, I just got your book in the mail today and I am mad for it! It could have been written with me in mind...plus do you know how cheering it is to see that in your patterns I am actually a size 10??!! Are your patterns for Butterick (which I adore) going to be similarly sized, or standard commercial pattern sized (in which I am, groan, an 18-20)? Either way, I can't wait to start sewing! good on ya, girl!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh that's good to hear! The Butterick sizes are their own, not mine. But they go to a size 22, so you're good!

  81. Congratulations! Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm so excited for you Gertie!!! I bought them immediately!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Wow! That's wonderful! I wonder though - what's the story with the grading and ease? On the vintage repro patterns for the various companies and for the Civil War period patterns they add massive quantities of ease and sometimes the grading is weird. Any idea how these hold up in the ease and grading departments?

They're beautiful designs! That coat is just delicious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks! I can't give a certain answer about the ease. I drafted the sample for a size 10 and that's what you see in the pictures. Butterick did the digitizing and grading, so it's possible they made changes to fit with their ease requirements. As always, I would check the finished garment measurements on the pattern before making it up.

  87. Holy Seam Tape Gretchen!!!! I just saw the COVER of the email that came to me from Butterick---- and saw the "by Gertie" --- had to zip over to the Blog immediately before even opening the Look Book. SO DAMN EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. This is so so exciting! I don't know how you were able to keep this under wraps. Since the Big 4 tend to be a substantial amount of ease, will your patterns also have the same amount, or will they be more true to size? And, do you have any interest in doing a sew along with these? That seems like it would be fun! Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Wow even more exciting news! LOVE these patterns - they are just beautiful :-D

    ReplyDelete
  90. Congratulations on all your success, it is wonderful to read about it. Enjoy! I don't know how you kept this a secret. You must have been bursting at the seams!

    ReplyDelete
  91. So excited to see all this happening for you, and the patterns are di-VINE!
Love that side draped dress. I collect vintage patterns and designs like that are RARE - so thankyou for making it accessible to everyone now.
How on earth did you keep it a secret though? Nice work :-)

    ReplyDelete
  92. Wow Gertie...you sure can keep a secret!!! Love the designs, especially the coat :) I'm waiting delivery on your book, and cannot wait to get my hands on it!

    ReplyDelete

  96. Wow, I love the coat! Shipping down to NZ is $15 (criminal, I think, because I can't see any way that it would cost that much; I've had patterns shipped for $5 and that was from a small town in Kansas) so it will have to wait, but still, wow!

  129. The dress looks very similar to a green dress that Christina Hendricks wears in promotional shots for Mad Men, just without the sleeves. Was it used as inspiration for your design?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it was! I will write more about the inspiration for each design soon. But yes, I loved that Mad Men dress and any vintage patterns for something similar are rare and expensive, so I decided to design my own version!

  130. I am in LOVE with your book. It was my most anticipated book of 2012 and it did not dissapoint. I didn't expect it too be so big. It is like five of my most coveted books all in one. I am so happy. I don't know where to start! I also just found out about your Butterick patterns this morning. I had said I wasn't going to buy any more patterns for awhile, but I am going to have to make an exception. You outdid yourself is all I can say. Thank you for sharing your passion with us

I'm looking forward to your next two patterns with delight and anticipation. I hope you have even more success with all your future endeavours.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Congrats...here's to hoping that you got a kick-ass contract that reverts all (some?) rights to you when the patterns are discontinued. Ideally you want to be able to sell these patterns forever and a day! I think all Americans should have some intellectual property that they can sell in perpetuity. It can add up to significant income over time.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Huge congrats, Gertie! I love both patterns. And, I received my copy of your book yesterday and am happily devouring it!

  152. Stop press to UK shoppers - Just logged on and got both patterns in the sale (today only I think, but you still have time!), for £12 (around 20 USD)inc postage. Very very happy. Now that lovely coat fabric which I have stashed for centuries will finally become the glam coat of my dreams. Thanks a million Gertie, as vintage lovers we salute you.x

  157. I just got your book in the mail and I cannot say enough of how happy I am. I've been planning a wiggle dress of my own only waiting for the pattern and now I "must" make a slightly modified sultry dress.

I am also quite happy that I only have to make a few alterations thanks to the bust/hip proportions you have on your patterns. I have a 6 inch hip difference from my bust measurements and your sizing makes life so easier! Thanks again for a wonderful book!

  161. I absolutely adore your new book! There is a jacket pattern in it that I think was also a craftsy tutorial. I went online to find it and it seems to have disappeared. I really wanted to take that class, was it removed from the craftsy website?
