Fourth of July Dress and Doggie

Happy Independence Day, readers! I made a special dress for the occasion months ago. It just happened to be timed with my appearance on Sew It All TV, on which I was talking about vintage trims. Rick rack was a necessity, obvs. So I thought ahead for once it my life and made a red, white, and blue dress with red rick rack that I could wear today, our first Independence Day living in a small town. (We live right on the main city park, and our porch faces the fireworks!)

This bodice is made from New Look 6886, and the skirt is a simple rectangular dirndl. The dress is made from a printed Swiss dot cotton that I got from Fabric Mart ages ago. I accessorized with a wide belt. I'm wearing a chiffon petticoat. (I bought it here, and it's the perfect amount of floofiness.)

The rick rack trims the neckline, peeking out from the bodice. There are two rows on the skirt as well, and they're just stitched flat. It's easy to apply, you just have to measure carefully from your hem to make sure you don't get crooked rows!

It's also our first Independence Day with Rosie! Of course, a matching kerchief was in order.

 How cute is she?

Pip came over to check out the action. Everyone is getting along great!

Not sure how we ever lived without sweet Rosie. She's such a gem.

Hope you're having a great day!

  11. You had me with the dog and cat but the dress is adorable. Great style. PS, I have a black lab who always wears a neck scarf. She fusses if it is off. So, every holiday etc. she gets a new outfit. This morning her red, white and blue is a left over from a patriotic quilt. She looks so cute. Your Rose is obviously in love with you and so glad everyone is getting along.

  18. Aw great family photos! Love the way you used the ricrac at the neckline; do you have any close-up pics? I was thinking of doing something similar and would love to see how you treated the area where the straps join, in particular :)

  31. I love the dress, especially the dotted swiss.. I haven't seen that in a while! I have avoided ric-rac, but you really did a great job of accenting with it! Small town life must agree with you... you are glowing.

  32. I have a few yards of that fabric too. I got it to make a blouse...but haven't. I love how it looks on the gathered skirt. Maybe I should make a dress instead.

  33. Fabulous dress...what undergarment would you recommend wearing with this type of bodice? Does it have bra cups built inside? or a strapless bra? or nothing? I have that pattern and am wanting to try it - just wondering what might work best. Thanks, Angela

  37. Hey Gertie!
I just purchased your book off of Amazon! I can't wait for September to come, which is when Amazon said it would be released. I am the quintessential lazy seamstress, but I promise to use your couture techniques on the book garments! Can't wait! I realize this comment has nothing to do with you lovely 4th of July dress, but I had to share the news!
