Anyway, it's months and months later, and I find myself thinking about the dress again. And about Smash, which I just informed Jeff that we're going to get caught up on.
Anyway, the dress comes from repro brand Stop Staring!, and you can buy it here.
I would just remove the bow thingy and widen the neckline, making the straps slightly narrower. I would make it very snug, in a stretch woven (let me know if you find some cherry print fabric!).

It's worth checking out Spandex House and Spandex World or a store like it. While they have a lot of swimsuit/skating suit fabrics, they also have a large number of jersey.

ReplyDeleteI too have had problems with staying interested in that show despite an interest in all the individual parts that make it up. I don't know why, just can't seem to keep up. I did, however, see the episode with the cherry dress and would really love one of my own. My original plan was to find just the right cherry print to make the Sew Retro Bombshell dress, but that is proving difficult as I also want to use something nicer than cotton when I make it up. I have a feeling I will end up just making myself 2 different dresses in the end. (as though that would be a bad thing)

ReplyDeleteI love that dress, but I'd definitely have to make it. My measurements put me in a medium for the bust and an XL in the waist & hips. Not going to pay $95+shipping for a dress that I'd have to futz with alterations that much on.
ReplyDeleteI am currently on the lookout for poppy printed fabric to make my bombshell dress out of. Not sure why I have to have poppies, it just popped into my head and now I can't find the fabric I see in my head.
I love cherry-print fabric, and I also love it when you do this type of feature. You've often helped me see the potential in patterns I would totally overlook--a real weakness of mine.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a TV and Smash is one of the few things I'll go out of my way to watch online. And I really can't figure out why and am kind of embarrassed by it, because I think big parts of it are really clumsy, cheesy, overstated, etc. But! It has an unusually progressive take on queer sexuality for TV, Katherine McPhee is so pretty, Angelica Houston is on it being badass, and it's just really fun.
That's a cute dress....I was trying to envision myself in it with my big old boobs and no hips...at least I got the Marilyn pooch to rock! HAHA
ReplyDeleteOh I'm a total Smash fan!! I was skeptical since it was being advertised as a "glee for adults" type show and (please don't hate me!) i hate glee! But I do love me a good musical, and maybe its the "making of a musical" aspect that I love, or perhaps its because Angelica Huston is just so Diva-y on the show (love!) but I'm hooked. Long story short - this was a cute dress for sure - and they've had some other good ones too! I felt like a saw a cherry print like this at Mood last summer (when I was searching for fabric for the Bombshell dress, actually!)

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this show :( but the dress does look awesome. Thanks for sharing the New Look idea, I love finding ways to make those dream items a reality. I'm on the look-out for a cute winter dress with long sleeves, there's not a lot (of attractive options) around! For any Australian readers, Lincraft has had a cherry range out for a while and now a new leopard print range which I think would look great in the New Look style!

ReplyDeleteI have been following the show from the beginning -- it's so exciting to see theater being portrayed on TV as something fun and worth doing and worth having catty drama about, rather than as an intellectual snoozefest (I tend to prefer the plays that others find intellectual snoozefests, but I don't think a network series about a Wallace Shawn type or a Caryl Churchill type or even a Teresa Rebeck type (she's the show's creator and writes many episodes), is going to get made any time soon).
ReplyDeleteA lot of my friends got tired of the show at about the fourth episode, but I'm glad I stuck it out -- it started strong, sagged towards the middle of season one, but is getting strong again and looks like it'll go out with a bang-up season ender in a couple of weeks. If you like the first couple of episodes, stick with it!
All the actors are doing bang-up work, especially Debra Messing IMO.
Oh, and also, great dress!
I have that dress pattern - I'd just say be wary of New Look sizing - it's a bit strange - they do like their ease! This is the dress I tried to make, and failed horribly, but then I used nightmare fabric -I'm hellbent on making it again though, as the dress does look good :D

Simplicity has a pattern that looks almost exactly like that dress, too, and it's from their custom fit line that has different pattern pieces for different cup sizes.

ReplyDeleteHi Gertie! I am a first time poster, but long time follower of your blog. I have fabric that is almost exactly like this. I think the print is a little smaller though. It isn't stretch, just cotton. I thought about making my Parfait dress in it. It would need to be lined though. Oh! And I got it at Jo-anns. I can send a pic. I'll bet you could do the Parfait and change the skirt to a pencil shape. (I couldn't, but you could. lol.) Super cute!
