Finished! The Raglan Sleeve Coat from VoNBBS

Readers, it's done! I finally finished the raglan sleeve coat from Vogue's New Book for Better Sewing. It looks very much like it does in the original book.

I followed the instructions step-by-step, and it all worked out. Even the welt pockets!

The lining all worked out in the end.

You can especially see the swing shape on the back.

I'm not really used to wearing this shape--it's so full and dramatic! It seems to work best with trousers.

So there's another one down, readers! Five to go. I've been tracing the pattern for the fitted suit (though, sadly, some pieces are missing) so I think that one will be next!

Well done! It looks fantastic! I admire you for succeeding with the welt pockets, my most loathed pocket style. Now you can enjoy swinging around town in style :)

Wow, Wow, Wow! Love the whole coat, especially those huge buttons! ;-)

Just beautiful! Is it a wool felt? Is there a dart in the sleeve cap or a seam the entire length? I have recently acquired all of my grandmothers patterns from the 20s and 30s . . . can't wait to use the styles of that time and re-do them for today!

Magnificent! So glad the lining worked out, it's perfection.

Great job! PS I have vintage swing coats and normally wear them with my dresses--I feel like I'm doing them an injustice if I'm wearing pants with them.

stupid question: Why are the buttons in the Vogue picture reversed? Is that a photographer oops-I-reversed the negative ?

I love it!!!

It's gorgeous! I adore the color! You look superb in it too! For some reason, to me, it looks a little frumpy on the pattern cover, but on you it looks positively darling. Very well done! The lining is divine as well!

Oh, Gertie, I had been waiting for this post! It's been like watching a soap opera and finally we have a very happy ending! The coat is so beautiful, you don't see such stylish and unique garments around. I hope I didn't offend you by comparing your work to a soap. I just meant to say that I had been following the progress of your coat and I couldn't wait to see it finished.Congratulations!

Congrats in finishing quite the challenging project. It came out great and looks terrific on you!

Whenever I take the last stitch in a big project, I always feel like there should be a brass band playing, cheering and bells & whistles. There never are, though. :(

Instead, we just move on to the next big thing. ***grin***

Gorgeous! That color will pop when it's drab and dreary outside. I'm sure you're going to make a lot of people smile. I never quite understood why dark colors are so "in" for winter. I love color to brighten the season!

Beautiful! Try it with a pencil skirt too - you definitely need a narrow shape with the fullness of this coat.

Hi Gertie, what a great coat, you have sewn it brilliantly. I just love the colour too.
Swing-y coats always feel fabulous on.
As if I didn't have enough to do sewing bags, I've begun a Christmas Countdown blog just for the hell of it. I am attempting to please all who love Christmas but have also included stuff about Christmas in Australia.

I may be the single voice of dissent, but I really don't think this coat suits you. It's beautifully made but, from the photos you've posted, it looks as though you are wearing your grandmother's coat (and not in a good way).

Amazing job on the coat! Do you know of any similar coat patterns available nowadays? Or would you be willing to sell a copy of the vogue pattern 7442? This is the coat I wish to make but finding the right pattern has been difficult: http://lifessweetessentials.tumblr.com/post/13826389206/
