Readers, it's done! I finally finished the raglan sleeve coat from Vogue's New Book for Better Sewing. It looks very much like it does in the original book.
I followed the instructions step-by-step, and it all worked out. Even the welt pockets!
The lining all worked out in the end.
You can especially see the swing shape on the back.
I'm not really used to wearing this shape--it's so full and dramatic! It seems to work best with trousers.
So there's another one down, readers! Five to go. I've been tracing the pattern for the fitted suit (though, sadly, some pieces are missing) so I think that one will be next!

Well done! It looks fantastic! I admire you for succeeding with the welt pockets, my most loathed pocket style. Now you can enjoy swinging around town in style :)
Love it.
Looks great. Very impressed with those buttonholes!
Lovely! The color is perfect. I really like the swingy shape, too. I've been drawn to that sort of shape lately.
Gertie - It's beautiful! Love the color, style & everything about it! Time to grab some wool and get making one for myself! Eventually Winter is going to hit us!
It looks great! I LOVE the lining!
Beautiful! I love the covered buttons!
The coat is absolutely beautiful. Job well done.
Wow, Wow, Wow! Love the whole coat, especially those huge buttons! ;-)
Just beautiful! Is it a wool felt? Is there a dart in the sleeve cap or a seam the entire length? I have recently acquired all of my grandmothers patterns from the 20s and 30s . . . can't wait to use the styles of that time and re-do them for today!
Magnificent! So glad the lining worked out, it's perfection.
Just lovely! I need to work up the courage to make a coat for myself.
You look beautiful! I love the color and the fun lining. I am inspired.
Great job! PS I have vintage swing coats and normally wear them with my dresses--I feel like I'm doing them an injustice if I'm wearing pants with them.
It is lovely! The colour is beautiful and the covered buttons are a nice finishing touch. Wow!
congratulation!!! Beautifull!!
Sorry my inglish
So lovely! Beautiful work!
LOVE the color and lining! Great job!!
Adorable! And totally wearable. Love it!
My favorite parts are the collar, the buttons (fabulous!) and the lining. Congratulations!
Stunning!
stupid question: Why are the buttons in the Vogue picture reversed? Is that a photographer oops-I-reversed the negative ?
I love it!!!
It's gorgeous! I adore the color! You look superb in it too! For some reason, to me, it looks a little frumpy on the pattern cover, but on you it looks positively darling. Very well done! The lining is divine as well!
I got my comment posted on the wrong page - but the coat is beautiful and fits really well. Good job!
You are adorable in your new coat! Looooovvve the lining.
Nice finish and those buttons match so well; they look like they were custom made for this coat! Awesome era reproduction!
It is beautiful! I love the lining.
very nice Gertie! and the powder blue (at least that is the color my monitor is showing) is so fresh. Great job. I don't know how you manage to do all that you do....and finish the coat!
Excellent job. Well done.
What a wonderful coat! Isn't it nice to be able to just reach in the closet and pull it out?
Wow - it looks stunning. I love all the features you have included. And the colour is to die for, it sure beats black, grey or beige.
Congratulations! I love, love, love your fabric choices and I am glad to see you get back to the book.
Lovely! If Roger Moore ever does anothe Saint season, you'll definitely get a call from the casting people :-D
Simply stunning.
Oh, Gertie, I had been waiting for this post! It's been like watching a soap opera and finally we have a very happy ending! The coat is so beautiful, you don't see such stylish and unique garments around. I hope I didn't offend you by comparing your work to a soap. I just meant to say that I had been following the progress of your coat and I couldn't wait to see it finished.Congratulations!
This is so stunning...
Everything about this coat is beautiful, the colour, the shape, the lining, the fit. Stunning
Even more beautiful than I imagined! Those buttons are fantastic.
Looks great.You look beautiful!
this coat is amazing, beautiful and so well made!
I've been searching for this shade of light blue to make a cape this year but had no luck, looking it on you convince me even more on how fantastic it is!
Aren't pastel colors a must this winter?
This looks lovely Gertie, it really suits you and it looks great with the trousers!
It looks amazing and I love the lining! I think you could wear it with skirts if they were tight fitting ones rather than full.
Absolutely adore your creations. Buttons are fabulous. Have you mentioned how you have done those? I will check through your blog.
Gorgeous.
It looks delicious! Very nice work! :)
It's fabulous. Very casual elegant. You've done an amazing job and it suits you nicely. This is such a great pattern! I seriously think vogue should re-issue these!
The coast looks awesome! Love it!
Congrats in finishing quite the challenging project. It came out great and looks terrific on you!
Whenever I take the last stitch in a big project, I always feel like there should be a brass band playing, cheering and bells & whistles. There never are, though. :(
Instead, we just move on to the next big thing. ***grin***
Lovely coat. That's going to be so cheerful in the dark days of winter.
Fantastic! I love the color, and the polka dot lining... genius!! What a masterpiece.
Perfection. Great job!
It's so adorable! It looks really warm as well
Gorgeous! That color will pop when it's drab and dreary outside. I'm sure you're going to make a lot of people smile. I never quite understood why dark colors are so "in" for winter. I love color to brighten the season!
It looks great on you! Did you have more lining fabric than you tought or why else did it work out?
OMG! I love it-it's gorgeous! I especially love the color and those covered buttons. Beautiful job!
It's looks very nice! I would love to make one. And I love those buttons! Enjoy it. You look great in it!!
Beautiful! I color is great and the lining is such a fun surprise. I feel like it would look just a great with a full skirt too!
Adore! Especially the color combo with the lining!
Is the coat as soft as it looks? I'm imagining that the fabric is soft like a cuddly bunny.
It came out so awesome! Very impressive :) ...as for your wall stickers behind you, did you know they make them with rhinestones now, to bedazzel your chandelier ?
Beautiful! Try it with a pencil skirt too - you definitely need a narrow shape with the fullness of this coat.

This coat looks just perfect: the color, pockets, swing, and those buttons! More info on the buttons, please.
Oh, wow, Gertie! What a triumph! You look totally fantastic in the coat! The style and the colour are just lovely on you.
Everything looks picture-perfect! Well done!
What a beauty! The lining is my favorite part, I love those unexpected and interesting type details.

I really would like to do a coat like that!
That is fabulous great job.
This is absolutely perfect! I love it! Great job!
How wonderful! I love the lining I'm so glad that worked out.
Did you end up needing a clapper for the seams!? It looks great! Congrats on finishing the coat!!
I just traced a jacket pattern from a Japanese pattern book, and can't wait to make something warm for winter.
Love, love, love it! Swing out sister!
It's beautiful!
Beautiful! Did you interline this coat? I bought some lambs wool interlining from McChulloch and Wallis in London to use on my own coat. Hard stuff to track down!
It's really so beautiful. I can't wait until I'm a good enough sewer to make a coat that I really want to wear!
omg: my word verification is: urifece. yuk.
Absolutely fantastic!!
Beautiful coat and those buttons!- fabulous!
Well done Gertie. Hopefully you will show us the inside & your feather stitching.
Looks absolutely beautiful! Well done!
Hi Gertie, what a great coat, you have sewn it brilliantly. I just love the colour too.
Swing-y coats always feel fabulous on.
As if I didn't have enough to do sewing bags, I've begun a Christmas Countdown blog just for the hell of it. I am attempting to please all who love Christmas but have also included stuff about Christmas in Australia.

Love the finished product, Gertie! The buttonholes and buttons are fantastic! I also like the swing style and your "new" profile pic. I've been so busy lately, I haven't had time to visit your regularly - so sorry! Must correct that immediately!
LOVE!!! LOVE the color, shape, lining. Gorgeous. Well done!
Fabulous job on the coat. I read the step by step instructions and a little over whelmed. hats off to you

Now, that's pretty darn cute!
Gasp! Gertie, it's so beautiful! You're an inspiration!
This looks great Gertie! I really love the lining. I bet it would look great with a long skirt or dress swooshing about underneath.
Absolutely gorgeous! What a great color and shape.
Love it. Very elegant.
Totally gorgeous, you've done a fantastic job! x
I may be the single voice of dissent, but I really don't think this coat suits you. It's beautifully made but, from the photos you've posted, it looks as though you are wearing your grandmother's coat (and not in a good way).
wow ! fabulous coat beautiful colour and lining :)
It's fabulous. I love that you are bold and not intimidated by something so monumental as a wool lined swing coat with bound buttonholes. Bravo.
So pretty! I love the lining!
Amazing job on the coat! Do you know of any similar coat patterns available nowadays? Or would you be willing to sell a copy of the vogue pattern 7442? This is the coat I wish to make but finding the right pattern has been difficult: http://lifessweetessentials.tumblr.com/post/13826389206/
