The Daily Dress: Reese Witherspoon in Vogue

{source}
Let's end the week with a dress that reminds us why we bother to sew with silk charmeuse, despite all its quirks. I love this Reese Witherspoon spread in the new Vogue. It has old-school glamour, a circus setting . . . and an elephant! The above photo is one of my favorites, not least because of the stunningly gorgeous drape created by the charmeuse gown.
The gown was designed by Narciso Rodriguez, and while it has a lovely simplicity, it doesn't quite have the appeal on the runway that it does with the retro styling of the Vogue spread. But, look at that hem! So lovely and fluid. Do you suppose it's underlined?

  1. I love the drape of the dress. The runway picture just doesn't do it justice!

  3. I love how the dress looks in Vogue, I wonder if the photo stylist artfully created those folds before the shot, because it doesn't look organic to me. Worth it though!

  4. Oh I don't get to see the Vogue or really any other magazines so I am loving all these wonderful pictures you are sharing.
    I love Reese Witherspoon and I loved the book from this movie and that dress..... to die for....

  5. I'm willing to bet that at least the upper half of it is underlined to get it keep it's body with a naked body underneath it.

    It truly is gorgeous, though.

  6. Underlined? I'm thinking yes - it doesn't look like there's anything under it in the way of undergarments. It really is beautiful, though...sigh!

  7. Gorgeous dress in Vogue, not as appealing on the runway. Can't wait for her new movie, tons of lovely costuming going on!

  8. I love how it flows, like liquid gold. So pretty. Much better on Reese than the runway model.

  9. Fantastic dress. I purchased the most wonderful nude silk charmeuse (the seller told me it was peau d'ange, "angel's skin") last week. I plan to use it with a flapper slip pattern I still have to adjust.

    Given how much trouble I have with sewing cotton in bias, I know it will be freakishly horrible with charmeuse, but ah, looking at a dress like this makes it worth it!

  10. Gorgeous dress! Reminds me of a gorgeous Vera Wang wedding gown from a few years ago and even Caroline Kennedy Bessett's dress.... the photo to me looks self lined or as LAP suggested folded under... but the runway photo is less clear...
    I agree, the Vogue spread does so much more for this beautiful dress.

  13. Lovely dress but I agree, it looks much better on Reese than the runway. It feels almost like a nightgown from a black and white movie on the runway. I think Reece's curves give it a little more shape.

  14. I agree completely with you about favoring the dress in the movie still photo vs the runway photo. For me, it is all about the vintage styling! As for underlining, if the fabric is at least mid-weight, I would guess that it is mot underlined. I love the drape of bias cut silk. Thanks for sharing!
