Facebook, you know how excited I am about this: I was recently hired to teach sewing! This is a dream gig for me, at a dreamy place:
The Sewing Studio, right here in New York City. You may know of The Sewing Studio's orginal Toronto location, and they've recently opened up a fabulous new location in Manhattan, right near the Garment District.
While I was being considered for the job, I was invited to the studio to chat and I knew right away that it was the place for me. Friendly, inviting, and hot pink! I just love the vibe of the place: clean, spacious, and pretty. The teachers are awesome and so is the owner, Denise. It's a large, airy space outfitted with brand new Janome machines and sergers. There's an always-full jar of chocolates. And the cutest little sitting area!
I'm teaching a couple classes a week, starting with the 8-week
Introductory Sewing course. It's super fun: the students learn the correct techniques for all the basics and make three projects, culminating in the skirt pattern of their choice. I'm only a couple weeks into it, and I've discovered that I
love teaching. What fun it is to share my biggest passion! With plenty of chocolate nearby! Sure, it's a lot to take on with a full-time job, a blog, and a book in the works, but I'm having such a blast I've hardly noticed.
So, anyway. I will keep you updated on my teaching schedule in the hopes that some of you locals might come sew with me in person. (Visit the
classes page for lots more details on the school and curriculum.) I'll also be taking on
private students in the future. Fun fun fun!

ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if some correspondence or on line classes would be developed to help those of us who are not local but would like to improve the quality of sewing. Your explanations are excellent.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I took classes at The Sewing Studio here in Toronto, and it was lots of fun. It's a great sewing school with a friendly atmosphere, and I am sure you will enjoy working there.

Congratulations. I wish I lived in New York so I could learn directly from you. However I think that might be a bit of a trek for this Brit :o) Looking forward to your book coming out though, hope to learn lots from that.

ReplyDeleteWow...that's the neatest (as in clean and not messy) sewing classroom I've ever seen. I was looking for stray bits of thread but I didn't see any. My classroom of choice is the one at Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, IL, if it's rented for the Sewing Salon...it will set you back...get this....$5.... a day! Yes, 5 bucks! Plus do it 10 times and you get a $20 gift certificate, a deal that's hard to beat.

Congratulations!!!! I am leaving my job to do the same thing...I even have the same pink chairs. I'm currently looking for a place to teach what I love too; sewing. I'm a little nervous, but excited. I ran across your blog looking for clip art. I wish you much luck; from the looks of the studio, I don't think you'll be lacking in students. It's an inviting environment! All the best to you.
