Jeff and I were watching
A Christmas Carol last night, and it really got me in the spirit of the season. I feel so fortunate this year and I've loved having all of you in my life. Luckily, I found the perfect way to give back: I've made a gift in honor of "the readers of GNBfBS" to
Women for Women International, which provides business resources to women survivors of war. You can choose a symbolic gift, and of course I chose the sewing machine! (I especially love that the image provided is a vintage Singer
Featherweight. A classic!)
According to Women for Women, "In Afghanistan, Kosovo and DR Congo, the path to economic self-sufficiency often begins with a small home tailoring business." It really struck me that a simple resource like a sewing machine could be a life-changing business asset. If you'd like to give a gift in honor of the seamstresses in your life, please visit the
Women for Women website.
Happy Holidays, lovely readers. And, as always, happy sewing!
What a great reminder, Gertie! And what better way for a seamstress to help those in need than offer something that is somewhat personal? :) Off to take a look...

What a beautiful idea! Not too sure if I can contribute being outside the States. But I am off to ave a look now!
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
ReplyDelete(an aside: that's not a Featherweight, it's a regular Singer, just with a hand crank instead of a foot pedal).
Thank you Gertie :)
ReplyDeleteI've contributed with fabric to go with the sewing machine!

Joyful Festivities All!
Hey - what a great idea!!!!
ReplyDeleteNice gesture! and Hapy Holidays to you, too.
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome. Thanks, Gertie!
ReplyDeleteEven in the U.S., up until recent decades, women became self-sufficient with their sewing skills. It's unfortunate that in this country sewing is now little more than a hobby. If you need something tailored, you go to the dry cleaners.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is a lovely gift! As a reader, I'm honored that you contributed in your readers honor!
ReplyDeletehow wonderful, Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThat just makes me happy. Thank you!

Awesome! My boyfriend and I have been looking for a charity to give to this Christmas, so I'll have to check this one out.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent choice and a great reminder that other's may do without at this time of year. Thank you.

Happy Holidays to you and may your 2011 be filled with wonderful experiences and beautiful dresses!
That's wonderful--I'm going to look into the organization!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. For those who are interested, Heifer International has the same approach - donating livestock of various types (depending on the location) to families, for milk, eggs, wool, etc. Your donation can contribute as little as a chicken or as much as a pair of water buffalo. Happy Merry!
