Hey Sew-Alongers! How are we all doing? This week I want us to focus on finishing up with muslins and cutting out our fabric. Are you still having fitting issues? Please post your muslin pics in the Flickr pool with notes on specific feedback you'd like.
If you're feeling good about your fit, take the muslin apart, make any changes, and use that baby as your pattern. (Or transfer your changes to your paper pattern, if you prefer.) Time to cut your fabric! I will leave you to do that on your own, and just remind you to be meticulous about grainlines. And don't forget to transfer all your markings!
Now, let's talk about the future, my dears. I thought I'd put us on a schedule! Here's what I'm thinking:
- Week of 9/27: finish up muslins and cut out and mark fabric, serge seam allowances (if desired)
- Week of 10/4: make bound buttonholes, interface/padstitch jacket front and collar (tips/tutorials to come on all)
- Week of 10/11: Assemble coat body, apply back stay, and set in the sleeves
- Week of 10/18: Tailor collar, assemble lining and facings, attach to coat
- Week of 10/25: Hems, belt/loops, and finishing touches

ReplyDeleteWhile I am still debating on whether or not to do this ( I live in Florida, and for the most part, a jacket like this would be rather not useful), the video of Henry made me chuckle. Thanks for that.

ReplyDeleteGrrrrr!! I think I'm going to have to zoom through the Lady Grey (I need a coat NOW!! It was 42 when I took Miss Lucy out for her morning sniff!!), but I have Dan's coat to also work on and my longer 2812 to practice buttonholes on!
I really like a wider belt (as opposed to the tie) on the L.Grey - so I think I'm going to skip the buttons and go with giant snaps - I'll always wear belted!
Henry is adorable. I bet he would be more animated if you had Sharon's locks dangling in front of him.

ReplyDeleteI will struggle gamely to keep up, lol. Would love to wear this coat to the last 2 marching band events, which are in early November. And giant snaps sound like a possibility (thanks for reminding me, Patty). I'm using melton wool and have a feeling that bound buttonholes would just be a terror, even if I could find silk organza to match my wool.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great schedule but unfortunately I can't keep up with it. I'm going on holidays tomorrow and away from my sewing machine for almost 2 weeks. Will get way behind everyone. Hopefully the tutorials will help me catch up and maybe I'll get some patient soul answering my questions, as I'm sure I'll have many. I'm still struggling to fit sleeves in the muslin. :(
ReplyDeleteHi Gertie: I think I'm going to have to serge my lining edges (or they will fray). But my fashion fabric is not fray-prone (it's boucle wool that's been mildly felted - though it doesn't look it). Do you encourage serging or overlocking or do you feel (other than on pockets), all the edges will be concealed/protected and therefore it's not necessary?

ReplyDeleteMan-o-man, I gotta get going on stitching my muslin together...between this, and the promise to my sister to make baby hats for halloween, I've got plenty to keep me busy all day long!
I wonder which one will be less frustrating to start with tomorrow...
I'm excited. I just figured out how to work my new serger. It's gonna be so handy for the coat and lining. :)

I really hope I can stick to this schedule. I'd love to have my coat ready for Halloween. It's turned a little bit chilly here now!
