Disney Sewing Scene Smackdown!

Wasn't it so fun looking back at the sewing scene from Cinderella last week? However, I think I may have been a bit hasty to call that dressmaking scene the best ever. You see, a couple commenters reminded me of the sewing scene in Sleeping Beauty. I watched it again, and it left me wondering: how could I have forgotten this gem? I've always loved the dress the fairies finally produce (with magic, rather than their own hands and wits) and I wrote about it as one of my favorite movie dresses of all time. But I had a complete lapse of memory when it came to the scene where they attempt to make said dress (and bake a rather dubious-looking cake). I'm so glad you helped me rediscover it, readers, because it is brilliant and hilarious.

How delightfully bitchy these fairies are! (Merryweather: "It looks terrible!" Flora: "That's because it's on you, dear.") Oh, and the priceless sewing moments! Flora's interpretation of a how a hem is formed is pure genius: why, you just cut a hole in the fabric and drop it over the wearer's head til it falls to the floor. (Flora: "Well, it's got to have a hole in the bottom." Fauna: "That's for the feet to go through!")

Have a watch of the clip below (turn your volume all the way up; the sound isn't so great). And then do tell: in a Disney sewing scene smackdown, who's your choice for the win? The highly-proficient mice of Cinderella or the fabulously catty fairies of Sleeping Beauty?

  2. Definitely Sleeping Beauty. Delightful movie.

  3. Honestly ladies? Could you be more stereotypically girly-girly? The pink and frilly cartoon sewing is giving me cavities. EVERYBODY knows THE ultimate movie sewing scene is from Batman Returns.

You know the one? Where Selina Kyle has her little breakdown (completely understandable when your boss pushes you out a window) and turns a patent leather raincoat into a sexy catsuit, and in the process transforms herself. I mean SYMBOLISM ANYONE?

  4. This gave me the giggles - make it blue!

I love them both! Now I need to go and rent these movies so I can watch them again. It's been years since I saw them.

  5. Amy: YouTube clip or it never happened.

(Seriously though, can you find one? Sounds badass.)

  6. Most definitely Sleeping Beauty.
But, I'm also with Amy on the Cat Woman Suit scene. That one really stuck with me as a kid.

  9. I'm for the mice of Cinderella . . . but I think the mice in Beatrix Potter's Tailor of Gloucester are even more delightful . . . they finish the Mayor's cherry colored wedding coat and yellow silk waistcoat embroidered with cornflowers when the tailor is in ill in bed . . . despite the interference of his cat Simkin.

  10. "Sleeping Beauty" for sure! Also, who can forget at the end the fairies continue their fight about what color the dress should be so it flickers back and forth from blue to pink while she's dancing with her Prince. I always wanted a dress that changed colors like that!

  11. i used to be terrified to watch sleeping beauty, because of the dragon! cinderella is my favourite, simply because they are MICE and BIRDS making the dress!

  12. After watching this lovely scene, I've got a horrible feeling that I've never actually seen the Disney version of Cinderella. Argh! Must rectify this!

  13. Clearly sleeping beauty! Not only does the first version of the dress bear a more-than-passing resemblance to my lady grey muslins, but my hubby turns 39 on Friday and I've been thinking of baking a real, live cake with a little knot of fear in my heart. I think I have the basics now! How to fold an egg!

  14. By far, Sleeping Beauty is my fave, always has been on every level! I have severed friendships over whether the dress should be blue or pink. If you are leaning toward pink, you are NOT my friend!!!

  15. I have to go with Sleeping Beauty :) Those fairies crack me up!

  16. I love both these films, sorry I just can't choose. Both very girly, but so nice....... The sewing scene in Batman mentioned by Amy is interesting too, but oh I do so love those old Disney cartoons.

  17. I had forgotten about that scene, too....even though I have seen it hundreds of times from when my now 28 y o daughter watched it over and over. It is without a doubt my favorite.

  18. As much as I don't like the movie Cinderella I like that sewing scene much better in that one. Much more fun!

  19. Oh absolutely Sleeping Beauty! Still one of my now grown kids favorite movies!

  20. I prefer the Sleeping Beauty scene, because of all the comments from the witches!

Question: what current book would you recommend for someone with basic sewing knowledge (very basic) who needs guidance? When does your book come out?

    Thanks! Kathleen

  21. They are both fantastic scenes, and there's nothing wrong with girly. I love the cottage they live in. Although Sleeping Beauty does have the added appeal with the spinning wheel...

  22. I love them both, but if forced to answer, I'd have to say Sleeping Beauty, for it's humor.

  23. I love both scenes! Although, I think I prefer the mice scene because they're so skilled. How did the fairies last in the woods with a child for 16 years without EVER cooking or sewing!?

    here's that catwoman scene!

  24. I think the mice have much better sewing skills...but darn, that fairy can drape! My vote is for the fairies. If you've ever been to a sewing circle or quilting bee, you know how true to life the catty comments are.

  25. I love this scene. It never fails to make me laugh, and how I wish I could simply fit my garment in a dress form made of thin air!

  26. As I mentioned in my comment on the Cinderella post...for me it is Sleeping Beauty hands down! SMACK :-D

Was my fav as a child and made even more so when I watched this movie over and over and over again when my daughter was little. Pretty much knew it by heart...

  27. Hands down, the scene from Sleeping Beauty is the best. I love those catty fairies. :)

  28. Sleeping Beauty is my all time favorite animated movie. I made the dress (in blue) for Halloween a couple of years ago.

  29. Hmm. . . in terms of the beauty of the dress I think the fairies win (I prefer it in blue). However, I think that I like the scene with the mice better and I'm going to be picky since they actually sew it :)

  30. I have to agree with Erzulimojo about the Tailor of Gloucester mice :) Super memorable. Maybe this needs to turn into a sewing scenes post in general? I really enjoyed the Sleeping Beauty scene though. Of course for the sewing and dialouge, but when the flour sack comes into the scene my words exactly were: "Oh! A flour sack!" and clapped my hands with excitement since I'm childish like that :)
(I took a short 2D animation course last summer and one of our first projects was animating a flour sack)
