The Greta Shoe: Yea or Nay?

Readers, I don't think I've ever felt so ambivalent about a shoe before. Let me explain my dilemma. You see, I'm trying to introduce more comfortable shoes into my wardrobe - walking everywhere in heels is really taking its toll on my poor feet. I love Re-Mix Vintage Shoes, and their 40s "wedgies" have been calling my name lately (just try to say "wedgies" with a straight face).

I ordered a pair of their Gloria wedges in red, which I love, but I don't think they're the comfortable walking shoe I was looking for. But goodness - they're cute, aren't they?

So I seem to keep coming back to the Greta shoe, which is also a true reproduction of a 40s wedge but has a lace-up design.

I look at it one minute and think "Cute! Quirky . . . but cute." Then I look back the next minute and think "Good lord, those are some weird looking shoes." So, which side are you falling on? Weird or cute? Yea or nay?

While you're at it, if you could recommend some cute, comfy, vintage-style shoes to wear with skirts, that would be awesome. What are you into - wedges, saddle shoes, Keds, Chucks? Do tell!

I will now close with a new picture of Henry.

P.S. Just as a follow-up to yesterday's post, I want to again apologize to anyone who took my comments as demeaning to homemakers or stay-at-home moms. It was not my intention at all, it was rather a failed attempt at a breezy tone. Jeff has now forbidden me from "blogging while cranky." BWC - it's a crime, people! Today you'll see that I've stuck to the less controversial topics of shoes and kitties. Who could be cranky while blogging about shoes and kitties?!

  1. I suspect it's all down to the person wearing them. Some people could pull it off, some couldn't. I definitely couldn't. This is my gripe with shoes - it's impossible to really judge until you've bought and worn, and then if they're a disaster there's very little you can do about it.

    Henry looks gorgeous.

    Cranky? You?

  2. They would look great with support hose.

  3. Sorry, but they look like my mother in law's walking shoes... Nay!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Nay. They look too much like what my grandmother used to wear, and it didn't look good on her feet. Granted, she had a beige pair, but still... no. I would much rather go for the twin strap slingback or the briarcliff style. My favourites are Deco and Promenade style though :)

  5. I'd love to see how those Glorias look on your feet. Gretas do seem a bit challenging.. ReMix-shoes are lovely, but I can't cope with the site. It's just too messy and dificult to navigate!

  6. Nay. My boyfriend's Nana has some very similar!

    Henry is looking particularly cute

  7. yay.

i have them, in green. i love them.

yes they are quirky, yes they are a bit granny. but i love granny looking things, so it's ok by me.

they are incredibly comfortable, for me anyway.

  8. those greta shoes... no. The others are really nice. I will literally spend days searching for the perfect nice shoe that i can walk in. Don't know if you have 'Office' in NYC but they have some great styles this season (in amongst a lot of rubbish). I am still hopelessly in love with Henry - that's a beautiful photo!

  9. Isn't that the point for them to look like grandmother's shoes? (Though my grandmother wore heels until she died, even after coming down with Alzheimer's. She remembered that she wore heels.)

If you are wearing vintage clothing then wear the vintage shoes to go with them. Commit!

  10. Nay. There's something odd about the combination of shoe laces and a peep toe.

  11. I don't like most Remix shoes, they may be authentic and comfortable but they're just not to my taste... I go for glamour over nanna.

  12. Every time I see such shoes - even on sharp as a tack vintage gals, my immediate reaction is 'Cool look, shame about the shoes'. They remind me too much of old ladies with puffy legs and support tights... The ones with a bow are very cute though.

  13. Nay! Whoa Nellie No, Nay!

Er. Just my opinion, of course. And girl, I totally hear you on the whole finding cute-but-comfortable heels dilema. It's a real struggle.

(And for what it's worth, I didn't take yesterday's post as a slur on housewives. I took it as a commentary on outdated attitudes towards women's roles in society... I assume that today's housewives are not under the same societal pressure to conform to gender standards as housewives of the 1950's. But what do I know? I'm not lucky enough to be a housewife, so I can't say for sure. On the other hand, BWC is probably a good thing to avoid... I should maybe keep that in mind myself.)

  14. well considering that i own the greta, i'd say it's a damn fine shoe indeed! i mean, c'mon, who can resist a shoe that looks like this? (these aren't my feet or shoes, btw) http://www.flickr.com/photos/41795916@N00/2903498800/

it certainly is comfortable. (though i wear a size larger in greta than i do in remix spectator wedgies) it looks cooler if you run your laces through it all the way from the bottom. it's also a perfect candidate for some ribbon lacing (think contrasting colors). i like to thread rayon seam tape through mine when the mood strikes. greta looks good with vintage style straight leg or trousers and with 40s style dresses, or course. you gotta have moxie to wear this shoe.

if you're looking for a comfy wedgie with some style though, I'd go with Brisa. (my current fave) They don't have it listed on their website, but it does come in a brick red just like greta. Just call the store and ask them to send you one. here's a pic of brisa in red http://www.flickr.com/photos/graygoosie/4454922445/in/photostream/ here they are in yellow http://www.barefoottess.com/product/REMIX-BRISA-YELLOW/Shop-for-Remix-Brisa-Platform-at-Barefoottesscom.html
briarcliff is also cute, as is gilda and l'amour. (Dita Von Teese wore l'amour to Coachella http://www.imnotobsessed.com/2009/04/20/dita-von-teese-at-the-coachella-music-festival )

  15. I like'em, but then I have a decided penchant for old-lady-shoes worn with a bit of an attitude. I don't know if you have them in the US but here in Britain Clarks do a nice line in comfortable shoes, and I generally find at least one pair I really like in amidst some admittedly dowdy offerings!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've been going back and forth on these very shoes myself! While I do love some of the 40s styles, my opinion of this style is that it could very easily slip into "granny" territory--not exactly the vibe I like to give off! lol. But, I do have a pair of Remix's "Picasso" wedges which are super comfy and resemble a lot of the styles that are popular right now (so they don't come off as obviously reproduction 40s shoes). I'm also thinking of eventually picking up the Rita heels (okay, not a comfy, walking style... lol) and the Picasso wedges in another color (I have black). I also really like the looks of the "pleated toe" and "Peseo" wedges.

Cute kitty pictures! Hurrah!!!! Henry is such a handsome kitty. :)

  17. Oh I LOVE these shoes!!!! They are grandma shoes derrrrr that's the point! The reason they make walking shoes for seniors look like the old styles is because no matter how much the old gals try to be "modern" they will always gravitate to what they use to look for when they were OBSESSED with what they looked like (teens). Seriously as long as they aren't in beige go for it...(especially the red they are HOT!!!). Don't rule out the granny shoes either, some of my FAVOURITE vintage style shoes (AND the comfiest) are Homyped, a brand made for senior ladies and bought from the chemist! :)

  18. Those are a Yea in my book -- and who should know better than I? But they only work with an unadulterated vintage look; I wouldn't wear them with stovepipe jeans...or would I?

Re yesterday's blog post, in my book homemakers deserve a good dressing down -- or is that homeWRECKERS.... Nevermind.

  19. Those're are actually not that different from the lace-up peep-toe wedges that have been all over runways/in magazines recently. This sort of stuff:
    http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/shop?query=wedge+lace+up+peep+toe

I say do it! It's all in the styling and the attitude.

  20. Gertie - two things:
You do not have to ever, ever apologize for anything you write on your blog. It is your personal blog, a space for you to ponder, write, and articulate your thoughts. If people are offended by what you say, then so be it...but you never need apologize to them. I think people often misinterpret things we write on our personal blogs because the reader often misses our intended tone. I found your post funny and it made perfect sense to me, as well as my mom, who was a SAHM in the early 60s and 70s when my siblings and I were young.

Second - have you tried any Dansko shoes? Their clogs are heavenly comfy, and they also make dress shoes with a similar orthopedic footbed that is designed for comfort and support. I have 10 pairs and love every one of them

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nay for the Greta, I love the Gloria instead, perfectly fitting your style.

    ReplyDelete
  22. NAY! Yech! While they *might* be ok(ish) with different laces, I'm confused as to why you would have picked those out of a lineup up much lovelier wedges! Briarcliff? Maryjane? Pleated toe sandal? Picasso V-strap sandal? Really, anything but the Greta!

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's all about your attitude. Some days I would wear them and think - OMG my granny wore these and I feel like a dowdy old frump. Other days I would think - hey I am really rocking my vintage groove today! I have been eyeing them up in black patent for MONTHS.If that helps...?!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not in love with them, but that's me. They fall into the same category as open-toed boots. I might consider them with pants. But again - that's me and my style. I think if you like them, you should get them and totally rock them!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think they'd look cute peeking out of jeans, but I wouldn't wear them with a skirt. Color matters a lot. Red, yes, white, God no!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I LOVE the Gretas! I am LOLing at all the people calling these "Granny" shoes. Haven't seen too many grannies rockin' cherry red wedgies like these, but even still, I always revered, loved, respected my grandmother, so I would consider it a compliment if someone thought my shoes looked like hers. I would say they are less overtly "girly" than the ones with the bows, but for a more CASUAL but stylish "PLAY SHOE" these are a perfect replica of what some of the most glamorous and pin up perfect women of the past wore on their days off, at the beach. All in all, if you are wanting to go for a fun but definitely authentic looking 40s style play shoe that is comfortable but fun, I say YAY to Greta.

    ReplyDelete
  27. NYC must be different than Philly ... when I worked downtown, we used to wear "commuting sneakers," and change into our heels once we got to the office. In fact, my boss kept her entire shoe inventory under her desk instead of at home!

I'm going to abstain from the shoe voting. I've been mostly wearing flats for the last 15 years. Got out of the heels habit when I was pregnant, and my current workplace is very business casual ... as in, if I wear a dress to work, they think I have a job interview! lol.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I dunno, they do look a bit orthopedic to me. But then, I'm not the target demographic and fall a little too close to old lady myself. But if you like them, you wear them.

I enjoyed yesterday's post! Might I suggest that some folks are a bit too sensitive?? After all, the 1950s were all about the cult of domesticity. The wedding dress struck me as an attempt at Gunne Sax, a brand that often featured mock aprons and pinafores as part of the look in the early 70s.

Henry is gorgeous, but of course he looks just like my Ghost. So I'm partial to his elegant grayness.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yay! They are certainly orthopaedic, but embrace your inner grandma! If you saw them on someone else (in a vintage dress) I reckon you'd be jealous.

I had a similar dilemna recently with these squidgy-soled clogs http://tinyurl.com/yyp3cto. In the end I kept them because they are even more comfortable and bouncy than trainers, and always get nice comments from people who want to know where to buy them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love the Greta shoes. My grandma had them in brown, and I would wear them in a heartbeat. I agree with Tilly--embrace your inner grandma! You're young and beautiful and can get away with wearing whatever you want. And in red they're fresh and new.

My grandma also wore her hose rolled down, but that's a look I wouldn't copy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm not digging these ones in particular -- kind of feels like a weird mixture of different elements to me. I feel the cute but not comfortable dilemma, though. I usually take the "bring an extra pair of shoes to swap out when no one is looking" approach. I second the comfort of Danskos (although they're not necessarily particularly vintage looking). I also love Sofft pumps, especially the ones with comfy but still cute kitten heels. I own this pair and love them:

  32. I have the Glories and I agree, not great for all day walking. I also have the Picasso wedge, which is super cute and a little better. I've sold my other Re-Mix shoes(pumps) and have come to the conclusion that Re-Mix are not comfortable shoes. If you're looking for walking shoes, try the Keds Midnight maryjane. It feels like a high heel sneaker. Another option is Aris Allen dance shoes. The only drawback to Aris Allens is that you need to have a cobbler add a street sole, but even with that extra work, they are cheaper than Re-Mix.

    ReplyDelete
  33. errrr....no. Maybe just because I can't imagine the visual shape they would make your foot being anything along the lines of aesthetically pleasing...

Being a NYer myself, I'm constantly on the search for comfy, attractive shoes as well.

Clark's (just off the NRW @ 59th & Lex) is my first stop go to and are amazing for comfy shoes, even heels, and they tend to have a bit of retro styling to them as well. Plus, you can actu8ally try the shoes on, which is always big in my book. Service kind of sucks in the store though.

Dansko has comfy shoes as well, but they can be a bit clunky and clog-y in style. You can get them at Shoe Mania on 14th (but go to the one between 5th & University, not the on-rack one on 14th & Park Ave)

My all time favorite though, is Born (with the little line through the o) I have never bought a pair of these shoes that I didn't adore to death. And I've bought my fair share. The make the best flip flops in the world. My favorite place to buy the is at the Mind Boggler on 8th between 5th & 6th (closer to 6th)

But that may just be because the dudes there are like, totally my pals.

sorry. that was all a little off topic.

But say no to those lace up peep toe cut out heeled oxford abominations. They will not be attractive on the foot. I promise.

  34. I've been struggling with this problem recently too - I've decided last year was the last time I was going to ruin my feet by spending all summer in flat, pinching, unsupportive ballet pumps, no matter how beautiful they are. But then the search for a wearable alternative that doesn't make the feet look flat and frumpy and looks good with skirts of different lengths is surprisingly difficult. I think Erin of Dressaday may be onto something with the penny loafer (http://www.dressaday.com/2009/06/loafer-update.html) - I always thought they looked hideously granny-ish until I tried a few on and they were surprisingly flattering (see Calendar Girl or Damask Rose by Clarks[http://www.clarks.co.uk/find/department-is-women/customproductattribute2-is-pumps], well known in the UK for comfortable shoes at high street prices). Another alternative for slightly more dressed down occasions would be the deck shoe (see Degree South, Kenzy Bliss or Kenzy Ahoy on the Clarks link above). The third thing I'm considering is lace-up brogues for ladies: see how this girl makes them work with dresses on chictopia: http://www.chictopia.com/sweetcandylove/4

  35. Hi Gertie,

this is the dilemma of my life. Comfortable yet cute walking shoes and sandals. I think those shoes could be cute with the right outfit but I do see that they could also be totally weird looking. I just don't know.

In general, I find that comfort for me comes from having a well-fitting ankle strap. I find flats and t-straps to be very hard to walk in.

And I'm sorry about my reaction to your post yesterday. I'll post on that post so as not to derail your lovely shoe blog post.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I kinda like the ones with the bows, but the others are well just too Mrs. Doubtfire!

    ReplyDelete
  37. If you don't find the Gloria comfortable, Ican't figure why you would find the Greta much different: the heigth seems the same, and appart from a different closure system, these shoes seem quite similar in terms of comfort.

I'm certainly not a reliable source in terms of american apparel, but why not flats?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nay from me. Wedges just aren't my thing.

For walking to work shoes, I usually wear ballet pumps or sneakers. I can't do heels on cobblestones, I've sprained my ankles too many times and have learnt the error of my ways.

Gorgeous cat. He looks so much like one of my boys, Tiny.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can't pull those off but I have ski sized feet so I would look ridiculous. Someone with smaller feet might be able to do it tho. As for my go to shoe, much to my SO's chagrin, I will always wear my Chucks. Love my Chucks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. They're not MY cup of tea ... but I feel certain you could pull 'em off with aplomb, lady!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm fining that I'm leaning to this type of shoe lately. I don't think eveyone could wear them and I think they'd look better on if you know what I mean. So I guess I think yes....and you can pull them off.

  42. I would say go for Aris Allens. They have vintage-ish styles made for swing dancing, so they are super comfy. Some of them have suede soles, but some of them have hard leather soles that with some judicious scraping up on concrete can be made rough enough to not slip for regular wear. Dancestore.com has many styles and often has more than a few on sale. I dance in both Aris Allens and Re-mix shoes, but with the Re-mix I always have to add squishy insoles; the Aris Allens I just wear out of the box.

    ReplyDelete
  43. of all my remix, aris allen and vintage shoes, my red Greta's are THE most comfortable wedge shoes i own. They will look great with your vintage/vintage inspired clothes. I'm saving to buy them in green and avocado - i wish they came in more colors! i vote YEA!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Certainly nay, for me. However, I can picture them with a pair of chic, sleek pants.
I found a brand I love named miss l-fire (http://www.misslfire.com/#/shoes/). their shoes are comfortable yet pretty, and they have a vintage-y feel. Shellys London also have nice shoes, but less comfortable.

  45. Does anyone remember the old fake commercial from Saturday Night Live many years ago for "Le Shoe"? A really ugly clunky shoe...narrated in a French accent..."Le Shoe, for ze work, for ze play"....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry - add another 'o' - orthopaedic. Late night!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think they could work, but if you're iffy on them, it might be hard to convince yourself. Have you tried the Ginesis shoes from Aerosoles? They're not a wedge, but the heel is good and sturdy, and they're Aerosoles, so padded footbed, hello! I think the styling is quite retro, and I love the yellow ones!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Gloria's ARE SO FLIPPING CUTE! The Greta's are cute too and I love them, especially since they are an authentic design. (I am learning the difference between authentic vintage and modern vintage since starting my new job.) I think the Greta's are cute and that you could totally pull them off particularly in a sassy color.
I always have a difficult time with shoes. i have a pair of mary janes that i have been wearing all the time because I love them and they just happened to work well with my feet. They are mid sized heels, maybe 2 inches, which are my favorites. Enough heel to make me feel dressed and pretty but not enough to kill my feet wearing them all day and taking public transit. i also just bought a pair of flats for the new job. My partner's mom is the BEST bargain shopper ever and she says she just goes when the little voice tells her. Sounds crazy but that is what I did with the flats and I fund the perfect pair and was out of the store in 20 min. So just go with the voice, or your gut and that will be right!
Have you looked at any Fluevogs? I have heard good things about them.
If you go with a re-mix vintage pair I would love to hear your review of them

    ReplyDelete
  49. and no one could ever be cranky after seeing that pic of Henry! A great way to start the day!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't worry about yesterday's post. I think you opened up a great discussion.

I say wear them. So what if your grandma used to wear something like them. She used to wear a bra too, I imagine, and you haven't abandoned those have you?

Not everyone has to love your shoes. You have to wear them and see if you do.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I was in the Re-Mix store in LA in February and I tried on the Greta. Personally, I think they are adorable and they are as close to a 1940s shoe as we're going to get (without buying something vintage on eBay).

You may want to look at these Aris Allen dance shoes - http://www.dancestore.com/Aris-Allen-Womens-Red-Peep-Toe-Mary-Jane/productinfo/160-RD/.
They are almost guaranteed to be comfortable as they are for serious swing dancers.

  52. Hi Gertie,

Have you tried Melissa shoes? They are ridiculously comfortable. They are made out of plastic (but in a classy way!) and it seems like they cushion your feet better. My sister has some tbars and I have wedges with a bow (in fake velvet that everyone has to touch to believe is plastic). I am usually hopeless with heels but these ones I can manage to wear all night without sore feet.

Some of the styles are a little weird and some of the heels might be too high for work but it's definitely worth having a look. Plus they smell like bubblegum!

  53. I have the same issue--even my lowish heels are no good for actually walking back and forth to the subway, and I do a LOT of walking. I think you could work these, but I would never buy a pair of shoes that I was even slightly ambivalent about since that would guarantee I would never wear them!

I usually go with Clark's (Privo by Clarks in particular--lots of cute styles, many retro-looking), Camper or Born for everyday cute walking flats or low heels. Some friends swear by Fluevog...

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have had the same debate about that shoe and decided that it was way too close to the shoes my grandmother wears. in the end, you have to feel like you can rock them, and alas, I could not. but, I found some other shoes that I could rock that are as comfy as wearing sneakers.

    first up- the fluevog illeana-
    http://www.fluevog.com/code/?w[0]=gender%3Awomen&w[1]=attribute%3AShoe&pp=3&view=detail&p=38&colourID=2066

and second- the ecco flat, which I highly recommend in patent leather-
    http://www.eccousa.com/shoes/womens/casual/casual-bouillon/1847/detail.aspx

I live every day in dresses and almost no one has ever seen me in pants. I refused to believe that I had to wear ugly shoes to be comfy!
    good luck!

  55. Definitely a little orthopedic but if your cute and stylish-which you are -you could pull it off. I know my man wouldn't like them though but some guys love that vintage sexy look.

  56. I don't think I would ever find a slingback to be a comfortable all day shoe; but I do have narrow heels and just cannot wear slingbacks.

Instead of Remix, take a peek at Rocket Originals (I LOVE the Kate shoe) and Johnson Shoes (This fellow handmakes all his shoes, and can remake ANY vintage shoe design you give him; met him at Viva, he's a sweetheart)

On those red shoes, I think they have definite skirt wearing potential, but the first thing i would do is change out the laces, do ribbon or white or black, something that makes them more personal and makes them slightly more current, but still adorably vintage

  62. I'd say the shoes are are Nay, but I'm more of a 50's/60's gal.

My favorite cute but functional shoes are the "Hali" by Report. I have them in two colors. The look is great, the shoes are comfortable and the ankle strap and wedge allow me to run for the train if necessary!

    ReplyDelete
  63. No no no. No. My aunt has those shoes, she's 94. Unfortunately I have no helpful information to share, I am always IDSO shoes to wear with skirts and dresses that are still suitable for serious walking. For now I'm a Chucks gal.

  64. Hey, thanks for introducing me to the remix shoes site. I can't afford them, but they are pretty to look at.
Ugh, walking in heels in NYC is a challenge, but worth it. I recommend that you check out Clarks, Born (ebay has them cheaper), and Aerosoles. They are fairly comfy for me, and I can walk around in my 2 1/2 inch Born boots for hours. Cushioning is also important.
I thought a lot about what you wrote about the house dress patterns yesterday. One of things that came to mind was the idea that women belonged in the home. I know that more women worked outside of the home in the 1940-1960s than our more dominant discourses about second wave feminism suggest. In fact, many women worked as nurses, teachers, secretary, administrative support staff, child care providers, waitresses, cooks, retail clerks, bookkeepers, and domestics- jobs that men would not consider doing. Some of these jobs would either put women in other people's homes but definitely took them outside of their own homes. The problem was that women would also do a second shift at home, but I also imagine that many women who worked outside the home got help from their own mothers, etc. So patterns mights have projected a bit of a fantasy, as well, to many women who could not afford ready to wear clothing, a fantasy that they could stay at home at not engage in outside work and do domestic things.
Anyway, they were great patterns. Thanks for sharing. The 1970s pantsuit pattern than you shared back in September inspired my outfit today. And your blog continues to inspire me to wish I had more time to sew (summer!!)

  66. I'm a bit ambivalent about those shoes myself. I think they'd be not too bad with your vintage aesthetic, but I also think that the wedge is a little low to create a line that's appealing to the modern eye - I'm afraid that they'd make your lower leg look a bit clunky. I'd also be concerned that if the other pair you have from this company is a bit less walkable than you'd hoped, these will be too.

I know they're not authentic to historic styles, but for comfortable, cute shoes, I'll go for Fluevogs every time.

  67. Good morning, Gertie! I really enjoy your blog.

Worishofer (maker of German cork soled walking sandals) has a similar style to the Greta called the Krista (#583) but I don't think it comes in red.

I, too, am on the fence about some of the Re-mix sandals. I love their high heels but the wedges are difficult to gauge from just a photo. I am considering purchasing their Gilda sandal but am unsure about the color.

  68. Love, love, love these shoes. A definite: Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yay!
Yes, they look like an old lady's shoes, but isn't that the point? Paired with an outfit that doesn't look like someone's nana, they will be gorgeous!
I have pretty big problems with my feet, and can walk about 20 minutes without being in pain later, but only if I wear orthopedic shoes that are fully cushioned in the entire sole (does that make sense in English? It's a direct translation, I'm afraid). Still, even my feet are comfortable for a while in Remix wedgies, but only if they're laced. The strapped ones and the high-heeled ones, as lovely as they are, just doesn't work for my heels.
Take it from someone who's feet are very picky with comfort, you're on the right track! =)

  70. Oh dear. I think that may be the El Camino of shoes, or maybe the mullet of shoes- business in front, party in back.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well I like them. I think you'd rock them in a vintage frock and sporting your retro vibe. Would they work with a Banana Republic outfit? No. But that's not what you'd wear.

As a flight attendant who routinely stands 12+ hours a day, my fave comfy shoes are by SoftWalk - any of them. Now they are not beautiful, but not hideous either. I suspect comfort is in the eye of your feet. I can heartily recommend Zappos.com, just sort for your size and free shipping and returns if you feel like trying any out. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I just bought these on sale about a month ago on sale at endless.com and I love them. I was afraid they'd be a little frumpy, but they are cool and comfy. The leather is very soft.
    So I say Yea!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh they are adorable. I predict any reservations you have would be fixed by sticking a foot in them. They'd also be very nice if you removed the laces and lace them up with a coordinating elastic cord. (You could sew the ends together or something so you eliminate the big bow at the instep).

That said I personally can't abide high heels as any sort of regular day-to-day wear. They're fun for weddings or the occasional big party, but dude! I have to walk places. I expect my feet to be able to keep up. I mostly wear shoes so flat they're (almost) literally ballet slippers.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Back alredy! =)
On reading more of the comments: Like some of the others here I'm a swing dancer, and yes, Aris Allen are comfortable. Before I ruined my feet I would have said there wasn't much difference in comfort between Aris Allen and Remix, and I would have gone for shoes with a clasp.
Now my feet are forcing me to rethink all of that. I've tried them all on, and my heels knows the difference. It might not be noticable to someone with healthy or semi-healthy feet, but perhaps it's what makes the difference for longer walks, even for them?
I have to say, I feel a bit envious of everyone saying Aris Allen or Ecco are comfy... Sneakers. With orthopedic soles. On a good day. *Sigh*

  75. My initial reaction to the photo, before reading the post, was CUTE! But I think I was just reacting to the color. About half a second later I thought, no...UGLY.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm not a fan of the Greta shoe, for many reasons - can't stand wedges with just a strap on the back (i need a proper back), not dainty/streamlined enough for my tastes, don't like peeptoes because i have piggy toes... remix shoes all give me the same love it one minuter/don't think so the next reaction.

if you're looking for heeled shoes, i second the recommendations for Clarks and Sofft shoes. i own three pairs of heels, Sofft, Victoria Spencer, and Ciao Bella - the last two bought at discount type shoes places, and have no idea if the brands as a whole are good or not - but all three are shoes i can wear when on my feet chasing children around children's church for an hour or so and be just as comfortable as if i were in flats. i rarely wear them, even still, because i just prefer flats in general.

everyday footwear they i can walk for miles in and still wear with vintage skirts/dresses - I have a couple pair of BC flats, all great. Privo by Clarks has amazingly comfortable shoes, i have some maroonish mary-jane styled ones that work great dressed up and i could run in them they're so comfortable. I have a pair of Toms that I wear with skirts occasionally, as they're minimal and not too noticable yet super comfy.
Keds have some very cute styles these days - even have some wedges.

Naturalizer, while having some very old ladyish shoes, also have some great very comfortable options in cute styles.

For a completely different sort of shoe - supreme in comfort (once you get used to them) - Earth shoes http://www.earthfootwear.com - these are pretty much amazing. You walk differently in them, they improve your posture - when i was standing for 8+ hours a day on concrete floors, these were the best shoes ever. Not particularly vintagey, can be a bit too hippy at times, but they have some classic styles that work. And did I mention the comfort level? A-mazing.

I like to shop Dilliard's for shoes - I'm sure you have a much better selection of shoes stores, but where I live, they're the only place that carries nicer brands. The older lady side of the shoe department is great, Clarks, Nature, Ecco, etc...

Also - I've never had a pair myself (too pricey, sadly) - but I've heard great things about the comfort that is Fluevog shoes, and there are a number of styles I would wear in a heartbeat (i'm in love with the Libby Smith & Barkerville styles). http://www.fluevog.com/ Very quirky. If you've the budget, (i think they're priced about the same as remix, actually) - there's a store in New York, you should check them out :)

    good luck!

  77. I have the Greta shoes (in fabulous green suede) and they are super cute and like all of the remix wedgies (hehe) I have, super comfortable. And, I always (always!) get compliments when I wear them. But — I think they're a pants shoe. They look really cute and interesting peeking out under a pair of trousers, but under a skirt look a little bulky. I've found the most comfortable Remix shoes for all day walking (and I walk...all the time...all over san francisco) and swing dancing (I'm another one) are the pleated wedges. The picassos are great too, though you need a narrower foot for those.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't understand all the grandma hate. It's a little troubling to me, to be honest, that some people react in such horror. Grandmas wear these shoes because they also wore them when they were younger and liked the stylish practicality of them.

That said, I have a few pairs of ReMix shoes, one that is similar to the Greta. I love/hate them. Sometimes I feel like they look odd on my feet, other times I think they look rather smart. I have found that I most often like the lace up wedges when worn with pants.

And while I'm championing for Grandma, my favorite wedges for walking - even running! - in are Worishofers. Now THAT, I will grant you, is a granny shoe (recently, they have also been Williamsburg hipster shoes, so never say they aren't versatile). But they have a few styles that look quite classic and fun. I have this pair and I get compliments on them all the time.

    http://www.buddysmoccasins.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/TheAli.jpg

I have no qualms about copping the looks sported by old ladies. I admire them and their flair.

    ReplyDelete
  79. OMG, earth shoes are fab - they are the only shoes (besides birks in the summer) that my partner wears.

the only caveat is this: you absolutely MUST have your pants rehemmed.

They have a negative heel, and if your pants are even the slightest bit too long, they will drag on the floor (which, in my book, is totally OK for jeans, but totally NOT OK for dress shoes)

loving all the clarks supporters too...they really are SUPER comfortable! my latest acquisition were these: http://clarks.zappos.com/n/p/dp/57129815/c/558.html and they're the only cupped hell dress shoes that don't chew my ankle up (I have a straight tendon, so most shoes I wear tend to be backless...weird, I know)

I wore them all day long when I had a job, and I was on my feet for most of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  80. almost so ugly they're cute? i've got a pair of aerosoles i wear all the time, and they almost should be kept in an elderly home, but my feet end up so grateful it's worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Love the non-lace up version but would pass on the Greta for reasons already given.

In addition to the comfort brands mentioned (many of which I've worn) the women in my city seem to love them some Campers.

Many of the heels have a vintage vibe to them, so you may want to take a look at the official site. [As well as the discount ones -- they don't change tremendously from year to year.] I've yet to buy but IME anything with a rubber heel is my foot's friend.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I don't like them - the laceup with the wedge is just really weird to me, combined with the shiny leather. I sympathize - I walk everywhere too, and cute shoes are hard to find! I recommend the brand Sofft - you can get them at Zappos or Macys. They have cute retro styles, and are really comfortable. I just bought the Serafino t-straps and a pair of wedges, and they are both far more comfy than heels have a right to be! I think the styles would go with your wardrobe well.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think they're cute, but I've seen them a lot and I feel like they usually do weird things to one's legs. I don't like the leather though, obviously.

I recently bought some cute flats from Steve Madden, they have some nice Oxford-style summer shoes out right now (the Tirah). I bought the HDreamur which I thought looked 30s-inspired.

    ReplyDelete
  84. For the record: "No. Seriously honey, NO."

"Matronly" doesn't begin to describe the dowdyness. Even on someone as young and hip as you.

Plus, if similar shoes by the same maker are not the comfy walking shoes you are looking for, it's not likely that these will be any better.

    My 2 cents.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Oh, and I like normal heels but I'm all about wedges, my saddle shoes, and Keds (I don't have an official pair, just a white pair from Payless). You have to be careful wearing saddle shoes though, it's easy to fall into what other people might consider a costume-y look. I like wearing them or Keds to give something a more casual look.

  86. I'm not gonna lie, I've been wanting to rock these in mocha. They are definitely grandma shoes, but I'm really drawn to them!

Ok yes i guess with the wrong outfit they would look granny...but kitten any vintage outfit could b granny...you've just gotta put it with the purrrrrrrfect outfit! They look simply adorable with wide leg vintage sailor pants or jeans! I pair them with matching vintage sweaters and yummy jewels! I own the brown and white spectator pair...the olive green...and white... they are the purrrrrfect fall shoe...hope that helps...i think i have a few pictures in my daily outfits posts...check it out! love your blog kitten!!! cat

  89. Yea.

I have the similar version, in red, from Aris Allen (less expensive, still well made) and I LOVE them. LOVE.

I wear them with so many things and I get compliments on them ALL THE TIME.

  90. NAY! I like the Gloria shoes much better.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hi Gertie, I understand your dilemma about finding comfortable shoes to wear with vintage styles and dresses. I have recently purchased a pair of Clarks Originals Ethel Noble pumps, which are like a high heeled loafer with a very comfortable rubber sole and heel. They look lovely and vintagey and are comfy to walk in. You should check them out! By the way, thanks for the fantastic blog, you're an amazing woman!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I wear keds, or fun modern sneakers. I'm all for happy feet!

I'm another Nay on Greta. I don't think they were ever a good look.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think it may depend on the size foot you have, as usual you can get away with way more things if you have a small foot (Eng size 3/4).

However if you check vintage stuff worn by real people instead in films, they did wear good comfy shoes cos they did have to walk a lot and couldn't just jump in the car. I have a lovely wedding pic of my mum and dad from 1942, she is wearing a lovely suit or costume as she called it and hat, but her shoes were her every day brown lace-ups, which had a small heel. As a child I found it hard to see why she had those on but she didn't have enough coupons left for new shoes too!!

So my vote is go for them and then show us a pic with you wearing them!! Wedgies are always the most comfy shoes I find for everyday!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I tried those on, and while they are comfy, they look weird. You really need to own those shoes. I am having the same comfort dilemma and have decided to get the Dara sandals. The are flat, but have a soft platform and, best yet, they have arch support. Huzzah.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think my scary first grade teacher wore these in size 11 band-aid beige.
They have an extra-spongy look to them which suggests they'd be really comfortable for walking...much prefer the second style.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Very cute shoes. I don't quite get why anyone who was into wearing the dress styles their grandma wore would have a problem with the shoes from the same era that go with them. ( I mean I see you might not like a particular style, but not just because they are grandma-esque.)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Gertie: can you show some stats on this question?. It looks to me it's a nay( I've already said that they look like old women walking shoes), but you better have the final word!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Gloria > Greta, in my opinion. But that's just me, Greta's not girly enough for my liking.
I totally relate to your dilemma of finding comfortable shoes, that are still cute and work with dresses! You have such a cool vibe though that if you wanted to wear Greta, you could rock 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  99. total YAY! I must have those in green.

I am a huge Worishofer fan and have the Krista style mentioned above in black. They are super comfortable for NYC streets. Just don't wear them in the rain! They will get ruined.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I seriously want those shoes and have been lusting after them for about 4 months. Those and the Picasso wedgies. I don't think in red or green that they would look like granny shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yay! for the look. Nay! for me ever wearing them. Which leads me to say - BOO!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm sort of where you are. I think they're cute at first, and so "quirky"...then in the next instant I think they're fairly ugly and unsure I'd ever be comfortable wearing them. (the bow shoes are adorable though!) I think they may be something that grows on me though! I'd definitely have to have a fun color. If they were brown or black, I think they'd make me feel like a Nanny.

About the SAHM thing...WTH? I read your post yesterday and never, ever got that vibe. And if you don't mind my saying so, from one bossy, opinionated girl to another, sometimes I disagree with you and wonder what you're smoking. Yesterday was not one of those days, HAHAHA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. First of all, Gertie can I say that I feel as if you are my imaginary cool best friend in New York that I desperately call while contemplating bloomers in a state of craziness (and yes, I did buy them). You are so delightfully adorable, I look forward to your daily posts.

I think you could rock the remix shoes. I actually almost got those exact ones but couldn't bring myself to spend the money. I opted for classic saddle shoes (sucker for two tone). I think a wedge is the best way for you to go, but I do know zappos has some low wedges as well, so you should check them out. Actually, now that I think of it, you probably already have....twice. So nevermind, I am in favor of the remix.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm sure you could rock those shoes! The red color and your cool sense of style will keep them from looking too "granny".
I bought a pair of black Born shoes last year that look very 1940s. Love 'em. Wish I knew the style name.

    ReplyDelete
  105. For me they are a nope. If they were in white they would be my 88yo Nanna's everyday shoes. It's the laces. They just look wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  106. i've got a pair of remix shoes, the mary janes, and i've tried on a bunch of others. they're all pretty equal, comfort-wise. wait till you get the glorias, then see if you need another comfy pair a la greta. they are cuter in person, i will definetly say that.

fyi, i have narrow feet, and these are WAY too wide!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I like those shoes. I suggest Fluevogs.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Love 'em!! Love 'em!! Love 'em!! But if you want comfort & super stylish shoes I too vote for Fluevogs. I now own 7 pairs and can't recommend them enough. Well made, beautiful shoes & he does some wicked interpretations on vintage styles.

  111. I think the shoes are fantastic. They would look great on you and I'd go for it if I was you! Henry is BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOVE your blog!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. I really like them, but I also spent my college years wearing these black orthopedic looking clompers -- sort of like what Norman Bates' mother wears in Psycho. I think the old lady look can totally work with the right clothes!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Oh, Henry looks like a supermodel!

Hmm, this is a hard one. They DO look a bit Clark's orthopaedic to me, but I think with the right frock, or the right, shorter length pants, you could avoid the Miami retiree look.

I love Beautifeel shoes, made in Israel. The comfiest I've ever worn. We get them here in Aus, and I think they are available in the US, too, and much cheaper than here!!

Comfy, yet stylish, chic shoes - it's harder than finding a good lipstick.

    ReplyDelete
  114. hey gertie
my everyday shoe is the remix corazon. I wear a lot of full vintage mexican skirts and squaw skirts. I wear them with wide cut 40s pants/ trousers. They are a dream to wear!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hmmm it's a slippery slope, I think these may unfortunately be bordering on nana-esque. For example, picture them in tan or nude.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I agree with another commenter: go for glamour - that's your style! - over granny.

It is SO hard to find flat, comfy, walkable dress shoes. I sprung for a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo pointy-toed flats. They were $150 on clearance at the outlets in Wrentham, MA (much more than I spend on shoes), but they are comfortable AND chic. The point elongates your leg like a high-heel does.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Nay, nay, nay!

My feet break out in blisters if you look at them the wrong way. Ecco shoes are super comfortable, and they sometimes have cute styles. El Naturalista is also great, but usually too chunky for my taste. Born can be very comfy and cute.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Oh, I have a similar reaction to those shoes as you do - I'm not sure if I absolutely adore them or really can't stand them, but it's definitely one of the two. It would probably depend on the person wearing them but I'm inclined to think you could pull them off!

    ReplyDelete
  119. I love lots of shoes my grandmother could have owned. But there, no. If you love them though I am sure you could rock them.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I've got a pair of these, in red, and I know the hesitation. But seriously, it's all about how you style them. I loved them so much I then went and bought an actual pair of elderly woman shoes ( http://www.homyped.com.au/product_city/city_Belle.html ) and they can be worn to look very glam, with the right dress. As for comfort, The lacing in the top makes it possible to fit them precisely across the bridge of your foot. Remix shoes have a fairly low arch in the footbed. If your bow wedges are too grippy across the top but the footbed fits ok, these will be ideal for you.
Dance shoes are yet another possibility: there is the Bleyer canvas wedge Swivel http://www.bleyershoes.co.uk/bleyer-swivel
And I can personally recommend the Australian made label Danstep, especially the bow-finished wedge style Wendy, which you can order in any colour combo you like.

  121. i have both the gretas and the glorias. the glorias are fun and comfortable but not a walking shoe. the bows clip on and tend to fall off. i love the gretas- mine are green- and can wear them all day at work, on my feet as a nurse in an outpt setting. the re-mix shoes look good on the foot too.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I see many of these on the re-enacting seen and it does look authentic, practical, comfy and stylish in a sensible ladylike way. They are also good to dance in. But they fall short of sexy and glamorous, so it depends on what you want to achieve.

A woman either wants a man to be speechless with respect for her, or drool helplessly at the sight of her...Thankfully, both can be achieved with SHOES

(I didn't make it up, it is what I remember of a birthday card)

    ReplyDelete
  123. I myself feel that the greta shoe, while cute, is also a bit old ladyish. Matronly as Tim Gunn would put it. Now, granny chic can be cool, but it is also a slipper slope and imagining this with a cute pencil skirt you've made... I think again of Tim Gunn making an "egh" type sound. sorry. I don't want to say this, but it is what I feel. Man that other shoe is precious. Borns (slash over o) tend to be comfortable overall, I have boots which are obviously not what you want but hear great things overall. I'm also on a similar hunt and will let you know as I find out.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Also for comfort and cuteness, i'd recommend My Baby Jo's Francisca tooled leather wedge. They are not nearly as well made as Remixes, though -- mine gave out after a two years of dancing in 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  126. One more suggestion, if you're considering dance shoes ('cause they're comfy) -- check out Aris Allens. Some very cute wedges.

  127. Checking my email and blogs from a business trip to London... and I have to say... from London... which is far far away... oh, honey! YOU do not need THOSE shoes in your life. In fact, if I need to get on a plane, back from London - far far away, as I mentioned - well then it needs doing. Just say no, Gertie!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Yes, absolutely! They will not look granny on you, especially with a fantastic swing skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I do like a retro shoe, but I am not sure about those above. I have a pair of Miz Mooz that were sold to me because they are good for walking. The designs tend to have a wider toe box, thicker and more substantial heels, and of course a very low heel to keep it wearable. I do not live in a place where I must walk miles on end, but so far mine have been very comfortable. I like the Jamison in the spring collection, as well as the Chai and the Chelsea. The Howl shoe in red even reminds me a bit of the Greta, but a little more modern.
p.s. I also have a pair of Sofft shoes I really like!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I love those shoes and have been saving up for them for myself. I love old lady shoes, old librarian shoes, old nurse shoes; I think they make an important statement about where we are, where we came from and the sociology of fashion. Oh, and I wink at my Nana's picture whenever I wear clothing from her era.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I usually just lurk and don't comment, but I actually laughed out loud reading "Good Lord...." Hahah.
I've seen lots of cute vintage shoes and I've seen my grandma wear lots of old shoes. I love my grandma, but I don't know if I'd wear some of the shoes she wears. She also wears salmon colored sweat pants if that changes things. :)

  132. I have these and they bum me out -- not as cute as I would like them to be!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Now look--my mother's name was Greta (pronounced with a long E)and she would not have worn those shoes. I do like the beige pair and think that I, who have a lot of difficulty with shoes, could wear them.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Greta shoes is so nice but Gloria wedges in red color is looking more comfort for walking than Greta shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I have a pair of Picasso Wedge Sandals. They are my fave and most comfy, are way cuter than the Greta and far more comfy than the Glorias.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I love them! Thanks for the link. I live in the cute sandals from SAS. Most of their styles are very "orthopedic". But, I am addicted to their comfort and I find a few, especially the sandals, to be attractive.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Like them okay but prefer the wedges at dancestore.com...cuter and more affordable

    ReplyDelete
  138. i say "yea" to the greta shoe! It IS quirky looking and honestly some people think it's ugly but its a genuine vintage look that I love and I think it looks great with a vintage outfit. Nothing flatlines an outfit more than a modern shoe with a retro look. I was wearing these shoes one day and NO LIE a HOMELESS, BALD, UGLY, DIRTY man walked past me and yelled "those are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen in my life!!" I chased after him with my iphone asking him to repeat it so I could make a video, i couldn't stop laughing! I still don't care. I think they'd be ugly in black but in red?! I love 'em and I say f' em if they dont like it! MJ
