My Guest Post on Already Pretty

I'm thrilled and honored that Sal of Already Pretty has given me a guest post slot on her blog today. Head on over to read my thoughts on body image and sewing. Yeah, I know, you think you've heard it all from me on this topic. But I was surprised to have some new things to say on the matter! I hope you'll mosey over to Already Pretty to read my post.

  1. I just found your blog via your guest post at Already Pretty, and I love it! I sew too, but I always struggle with getting an item to fit exactly right. I'll definitely be following your blog now!

  2. Love the post, so great!

I love the bright blue-violet dress, what pattern in this? Fab!

  3. As ever, perfectly voiced. One does have to take a long hard look at one's body first, but the great thing about sewing is that it's all about working with one's body, rather than against it. You come to know your body's strengths and can look on far more dispassionately at the bits you don't like because you know you can work around them and maybe even enhance them. And that is such a rewarding experience...

Thank you for introducing me to Sally's blog and looking forward to catching up with it!

  4. I have never ventured beyond sewing skirts and household items, but I've bookmarked your blog and am going to push my boundaries! I enjoyed your post on Already Pretty, and as the 50-yr-old mom of a heavily tattooed 22-yr-old, I think your tats look pretty and you wear them well. Thanks,
    Beth

  5. But I love your tattoos! Who could complain about them? They're gorgeous!

  6. I liked your guest post. I'm a quilter who's been trying to learn garment sewing. I can never find RTW clothing that fits, but I don't know how to alter patterns. I really liked the video tutorial you did on fitting a bodice and I'm planning to buy the book on fitting you recommended.

  8. Thanks, ladies! The dress is McCalls 5971. I wrote about it here:

  9. Ahh! You're such an inspiration! I found your blog from Sally recently and I spent a lot of time going through back posts. You are awesome. I'm a blog junkie and I've found a new source. I just got my first sewing machine (old, off ebay) and I'm going to try to use it today. The goal is try to take steps to do the great things you do. Love the politics, commentary, and of course the clothes!

  10. On the part about sewing pattern sizes being so different than retail: My experience was actually opposite. I have been sewing since I was very young, so when I finally started trying on retail dresses (for prom and such) I was kind of amazed that my size number was so much smaller than my sewing pattern size number!

  11. As a petite size 6, I appreciate my body shape, but I must admit that as a vintage pattern sewer, I look at curvy figures such as that of the gorgeous redhead in Mad Men (can't remember her name as they have taken it off air in Australia, so dissapointed!)and wish I could fill a dress out like that! Why are women all expected to look like malnourished prepubescent boys now? I find it is just another way to demean anything feminine and 'womenly'. Feminism to me is about celebrating women, in all the shapes they come in.

  12. Beautiful color for you. Just wanted to let you know I have listed some more vintage patterns in my etsy store and will continue to do so today: http://www.etsy.com/shop/LadybugDuds
One is a mail order version of the walkaway dress in a B32, if anyone's interested in comparing it to the Butterick.

  13. Gertie, I have a new reason to get out of bed in the morning...your blog posts! I have recently returned to sewing for myriad reasons; fit issues, passion for beautiful, well made clothing, a love for creating something with my own two hands and my love affair with iconic styles from decades gone by. You have it all right here. You have truly inspired me to delve into a deeper level of creativity. Thank you thank you thank you! Sorry for gushing, I just can't help myself!

  14. Gertie, this is totally off topic, but I had to make this very belated entry into your horrible patterns contest:

  15. A big congrats on the guest post, Gertie!!! I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on the intersections of sewing and body image, as usual.

Oh, and did you get that hoped-for snow day, btw? ;)

  16. I have forward shoulders too and I believe I've had them since I was a teenager. I hear teens posture can change that way because they feel self-conscious about their growing breasts.

  17. I go back and forth is the truth. Yes, if I sew clothes, they fit me to a T. But sewing clothes is a ton of work, so I sometimes feel bad that I put the effort in only to have made a style that no matter how great the fit just doesn't flatter me. My sewing time is precious since I work a ton, and it really frustrates me to finish something I then decide is awful on me.

So how do you deal with that? Anyone?

Thanks for your comments; I read each and every one! xo Gertie
