Gertie's Hudson Valley Sewing Retreat!

What: A weekend of sewing, food, relaxation, and camaraderie in the beautiful Hudson Valley

Where: The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls, a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Beacon--within walking distance to galleries, vintage shopping, boutiques, and fabulous restaurants.

When: Friday, April 4th though Sunday April 6th, 2014

What's included:
  • Sewing demos by Gertie on a variety of topics, with an emphasis on dressmaking
  • Gertie's personalized fitting and sewing help with a garment project you bring along
  • Sewing machines will be provided in a private room overlooking the falls
  • Two nights stay at the Roundhouse (Options range from a shared room--we'll find you a roomie--to a private luxury suite)
  • A fancy-schmancy Friday night welcome dinner at Swift, the Roundhouse's gorgeous restaurant
  • Daily continental breakfast
  • Boxed lunch on Saturday
  • Refreshments to keep us fortified while sewing
  • A sneak peek at my new book
Cost: The retreat cost will range from $930 (shared room) to $1300 (fancy private luxury suite)

  1. Great idea to have a separate page. It would be fabulous to have you visit Toronto at some point. I'd make the trip into the city.

  2. Yes, please! You could do a guest teaching at the Sewing Studio here!

  3. I love the guest teaching idea! I'll keep it in mind for the future. Plus, I've always wanted to go to Toronto. :)

    1. How about Montreal? Pleeeeeeaaaaase??? We've got a new wax museum! Ok, that probably wasn't my best pitch...

    2. Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal would make a wonderful summer trip. We can use some Gertie goodness in Canada! If I were you might stay clear of Canada in the winter though unless you want to teach a course on making a down-filled wiggle dress. :)

    3. I agree! Toronto! We love you here in Canada Gertie!

  4. It would be great if you could offer an evening class or weekend class for kids somewhere in your busy schedule.

  5. OMG Gertie, I want to be you!

I'm trying to understand sewing and design also, and I love vintage patterns. I have a very cool collection of my own and I hesitate every time I get an idea. I usually make vintage children's clothing from original patterns, but always struggle with sizing. I think I can do it, I just need more knowledge. I have my clothing on ETSY, but it's very saturated there and competitive. Thanks for all your great information.

  6. Gertie, I am attending your pattern making class at the American Sewing Expo in Novi. I have your book, would you mind signing it for me? I would appreciate it:) Thanks!!

  7. Hi I would like to take your pattern drafting class. I am new to sewing and can't find patterns I like that fit my shape (read thin, straight no curves). Would your class be appropriate?

  8. I saw you on the PBS TV show "Sew It All" recently + we just loved your tips! I thought rick rack + pom pom trim would be super cheesy until I saw what you did - it looked very elegant + made the dresses more special. Plus, I never realized soutache was that simple! I thought it looked like finger-bleeding time when I've seen the small piping-type details on clothing. So thanks for the tips - I'm definitely "borrowing" some of your ideas for my next project to make it mine.
Anyway, I'm writing because we loved your dresses on the mannequins but you were busy demonstrating, and the camera never went in close enough to see that much detail except for what you were demonstrating - probably the point!. I was wondering if you could tell us more about them? Are they from your book(s)? You mentioned the pinkish/red one was from a vintage pattern . . . Any info. on pattern #'s or even your fabric choices would be appreciated.
I tried looking through your previous projects and didn't see them, and I've had to request that my library buy your 1st book, + they are, so I couldn't look through it yet. But they told me I get to check it out first since I requested they buy it! :-) I hope I'm not asking redundant questions. Thanks again for the great demo - glad I have it on my DVR :-D

  10. I so wish I could do it but it's out of my range financially unless I win powerball. It sounds like so much fun!

  11. Hi, Gertie! I subbed to the email list and received my confirmation. How am I supposed to let people know I might be interested in sharing a room? I don't know anyone personally who would be interested in attending with me so I would need to hook up with someone beforehand. (It's not a definite that I'll attend, it's too far in the future to say for sure just yet, but I can afford it so I'm leaning towards yes.) Thanks!

    1. Don't worry about finding a roomie. When you actually sign up, you'll be able to let us know your housing preferences and whether you need a roommate or not. Then I will match people up. Hope you can make it!!!

  17. OMG I desperately want to do this, but I may be starting a new job at the first of the year and don't know if I can pull off the away time. UGH! BUT MAYBE if my buddy in The Woodlands is game we can make a girlie Gertie Weekend of the event! FUN!

  19. Hello,
I signed up for the mailing list earlier this month. Am I too late to join the retreat?

I've done two projects from your book and I love what I'm learning!

  21. I think it would be awesome if someone would host a vintage patterns and notions swap at your retreat. Unfortunately, I can't make it this year...maybe next year.

  22. Oh wow - I'd love to make it to this retreat - but I didn't find it in enough time - any way that you could give a possible heads up for the 2015 retreat? What a great girls weekend getaway!!!
