Atomic Starburst Three-Way Sundress

Removable straps are one of my favorite ways to switch up the look of a dress! This is made from patterns from my new book, Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book. It's the strapless bodice and the side pleated skirt.

I made it in one of my new fabrics. This is an atomic starburst print on a cotton Swiss dot. Available at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores! I love the Jetsons feel of the print.

And Swiss Dot is one of my favorite fabrics!

The dress is fully lined in white cotton voile and it has buttons inside for straps.

You can see the boning channels here too.
The strap placement is wide-set and can be worn crossed in the back:

 Crossed in the front:

Or strapless!

I like this skirt pattern a lot because it's a nice alternative to a gathered dirndl or a full circle skirt. It's essentially a half circle with three pleats on each side.

This is one of the dresses my mom helped me with when I was in Arizona recently. There are more to come, too! (Thanks, Mom.) I'm putting together a little trunk show of dresses that will be on display at this event. Any New Yorkers care to come up to Beacon for the day? Hope to see you there!

  1. Your whole batch of dresses are lovely. If only the skin art didn't detract so much from the dress designs and fabric design. Sigh.

    2. That is a really rude thing to say. Why even mention it? All you have done is insult the woman who works so hard on this blog and on her business. That is her body, and she gets to choose what to do with it. Your insult is totally personal and has nothing to do with the dresses AT ALL. Do you think by commenting so negatively that you are contributing in a positive way to anything? I think you owe Gertie a huge apology. Not that I even remotely expect that you'll give her one. (sorry- I had to delete and repost because my first one was so typo ridden.)

    4. Seriously, Cherie? Comment on the dress or the patterns in the book, as that's what the post is about. But disparaging remarks about someone's appearance are just rude. Did your mother not teach you to not say anything if you have nothing good to say?

    5. Thanks, ladies! I seem to always get one comment of this kind lately, but I don't even have to worry about it because I have so many cool women coming to my defense! I so appreciate the support!

  4. Love the dress (and your beautiful skin art!), but I am perplexed: what is Swiss dot?

    1. It's a a textured fabric--it has little tufts all over that kind of resemble polka dots.

  7. Do you think there's a way I could use a border print to make this dress? I've got a great fabric with a flamingo-print border which would look great made up in a dress like this, but I'm not sure the border will work with anything other than a dirndl-type skirt, owing to the fact that there's not a lot of room between the selvage and the border. I'd love your thoughts.

    1. The bottom of the skirt is too curved for a border print, unfortunately! From my book, you could use either the Pencil Skirt or the All-Around Pleated Skirt with this bodice. Love the idea of a flamingo border print--where did you find it?

    2. Etsy. It's a Michael Miller print and, while novelty cotton usually isn't fine enough for most garment sewing (as you know), this one has a much softer hand and seems to be of a much finer weave than most. The main body of the print is a mint green with white clouds and the overall style of the print reminded me a lot of some skirts that my mother and grandmother had back in the late 50's.

  10. I love this dress! I think I need to go buy the book like yesterday! I saw a fabric at JoAnns a few days ago that I think would work so well! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work!
