New Spring Butterick Patterns

I'm super excited to show you my new Butterick patterns for spring! I have two new dress designs, both of which are shown in my new fabric collection. The fabrics will be coming to Joann Stores in the next couple months, and I'll be sure to do a separate post about them.

First up is B6322, a corset-styled dress with ruching. This one was directly inspired by a sweet little pink dress from the '50s that I found at a vintage show.

It's super dirndl-y, which is funny because I designed this before I left for that trip for Germany that got me all dirndl-obsessed. I guess it was fated!

It's shown above with a crinoline, and below without one.

It has a low scoop back.

This fabric is a cotton sateen in pink floral, which will also be available in blue if that's more to your liking!

There's binding around the neckline and armholes for a clean finish.

I made this recently in a border print sateen too! You may recognize this fabric design from last spring (it had a grey background), and now it's going to be available in two new colors--yellow and aqua.

Next up is B6323, a one-shoulder dress that's also great for showcasing border prints.

It's shown in one of my new favorite spring fabrics, a really fun beach print with polka dots, umbrellas, and retro girl silhouettes. There's a small border of umbrellas on one selvage, which can be used across the neckline and for the shoulder bow.

The small border continues in the back.

Of course, you can also sew up this dress in a non-border print, as illustrated here. This rendering also shows a new fabric, a yellow and ivory rose print in rayon challis.

Make it with or without the shoulder bow.

I'll have more news on the fabrics soon! I hope you like the new patterns.

  1. I do not like one shoulder dresses very much, but I LOVE your other pattern. Will have to add this to my "Gertie Collection"

  2. Couldn't one draft the other shoulder for those who prefer both shoulders covered? Just an idea. Cute but some of us especially older ladies prefer our shoulders covered. Looks cute on you though! :)

    1. Heh, I'm not any older than Gertie and don't wear one-shoulder outfits. I need coverage for a bra!

  3. Girl, I love you, but Butterick F-ed up letting you model them. I can't tell where the dress's sleeves end and yours begin.

You should remake that one in a lavender solid so we can see the sleeves and cut of the dress.

    1. I strongly prefer to model my own designs. The illustrations and line drawings should give you a better idea of the cut of the dress!

    2. You look amazing in these dresses, and they look fab on you. Don't listen to the haters, even when (or perhaps especially when) they tell you they love you before running you down.

    3. Perhaps you should get your eyes checked or clean your computer screen---I can see where the sleeves end perfectly on my monitor. No need to insult her lovely arms.

    4. Wow, snippy much? Part of learning to sew is learning to go by the line drawing and not by how it looks on the model. Honestly, the ones Gertie models herself are usually the only women's patterns in the Butterick book that don't have glaringly obvious fit issues on the models.

  5. Loved the B6322, a corset-styled dress with ruching! Very creative use of the fabric.

I'm one that is very short waisted so could not wear this style. Before I realized that limitation I probably would have made the dress and been sorely disappointed that it would not look as good on me, as it does on you. Just Beautiful .

Do you know of any software program that would have a croqui templates of various body types, that you could super impose a pattern upon, to see how it would play out in "real life"?

I see a real need for this type of program as our body shapes shift through life. Ah, to be 16 and slim!

  7. Squee! I was just at Joann, wondering if you would have new fabrics for spring. I can't wait to see them, plus I love the corset waist dress!

And your arms are quite attractive, tattoos and all. :-)

  8. Im not a tats fan, but I don't mind seeing the clothes on someone who has tats. If the style is good, the style is good, and tats won't take away from that.

Vintage styles are the bomb and I have several of the Gertie patterns.

  9. Hi Gertie. These new patterns are great and you look stunning in them. :) I'm thinking of buying the corset style dress (I am also in love with Dirndls) but I'm a bit worried about making the waist cincher thing look professional. Any tips for sewing binding onto ruching? And how is the corset bit strengthened? Do you use super tough interfacing or something? Will I need any fancy equipment to put the eyelets in? Would love a tutorial for this one. Thanks for all your great patterns and fabric! I'm a big fan!

    1. Hi Priya! These are great questions. I'm happy to say that this dress is really easy to sew! I had my concerns about the binding, but it went on very easily. As for the eyelets, I used a Dritz eyelet plier kit from Joanns and was also very easy. The corset overlay just has regular fusible interfacing. It doesn't need to be very stiff, as it's a faux corset look, rather than an actual corset. It doesn't cinch or give waist reduction, though it gives a slight nipped-in look just by design. If you're concerned about that piece buckling, you could add some rows of boning to it. I love the idea for a tutorial!

  11. Both of these are SUCH winners, and i've been dreaming of a more casual version of a goddess neckline forever. It being perfect for border prints is just ice cream on a very pretty cake. I love how your tattooed arms look with the ruched scoopneck SO much! I also love that The Glass Menagerie remains prominent in your color palette for fabric design. Our gentleman callers are all about the pleurisy after all.

  20. Gertie, my first time posting on a blog (i guess I am a little slow) I just realized you are in Arizona which is awesome! My question is in regards to the corset style dress, do you think it might help hide some of my mid section puffiness? Or is it better for women with small waists?

  21. Hi Gertie, I've admired your growing career in the sewing world! Congrats on your Joaan's collaboration - I mostly shop my fabric online now..... But this is a reason to visit Joann's! Enjoy it all :)
