A Pink Christmas

Merry Christmas, all! I don't think I've ever put up a picture of my beautiful pink Christmas tree, one of my most prized possessions. I decorated it with vintage pink glass ornaments, and my Durer bunny from Vienna sits under the tree on a bed of white felt.

I had a little trouble with the light on this particular day, but I kind of love how these photos have a grainy vintage vibe.

I also thought it would be a good opportunity to do a sneak peek of a dress from my upcoming Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book. This is a the "Cranberry Boiled Wool Dress." It has a '40s vibe, with a princess-seam bodice, short sleeves, and an a-line skirt.

One of the best things about boiled wool, besides its lush feel, is that the edges don't ravel. So I made a cute little raw-edged bow for the neckline. Here's one of the shots from the actual book photoshoot.

In other news, I'm in Austin, Texas for the holidays! I've never been here before but I totally love it. Great vintage shopping, a cool sewing studio, and dress weather year-round? Sign me up!

Happy Holidays, everybunny!

  7. If I hadn't already preordered the book I would now for this dress alone!

Welcome to Austin! Also check out TexStyles if you fancy checking out the local fabric scene; they are my favorite for apparel fabric. Theycan be a little iffy at times on keeping hours so call ahead if it is out of the way.

    1. Thank you for sharing this! Since Uncommon Thread closed its doors I haven't had a local source of Japanese fabrics.

  12. Enjoy your stay in Austin. FYI Christmas is sometimes warm. Three years ago it snowed & was cold for weeks. Now we get tornado producing thunderstorms in North East & Central areas. Windy, windy, windy add the cold. Hope you brought your jacket! Merry Texas Christmas! Enjoy your stay!

  14. What a wonderful dress, Gertie, I love it! Boiled wool, ha? it does not seem bulky, it appears to press well, and the colour is beautiful... is it itchy?? Have you lined it? where did you get the fabric?
Enjoy Austin, and have merry holidays!

  15. The dress is amazing!! It's extremely difficult to find decent quality fabrics here. I bet it keeps you warm and cool. I have a pair of trousers in thin wool and they are definitely not itchy, just perfect for summers.

  16. Oh wow! I so love everything about that dress. Never had boiled wool down for dressmaking, more coat-making so thank you for the inspiration!

  17. Merry Christmas! Did you see the picture of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in dirndls on the last SNL? It's about four minutes from the end of the episode.

  19. I'v never seen a tall pink tree but I love it!!! Your dress has a vintage look about it which I love. Where did you find a lightweight boiled wool? All the boiled wool I have ever seen is jacket weight. It was so hot in Richmond, Virginia on Christmas that I would have melted in anything wool. I was wearing short sleeves and a skirt and no tights! And I opened the windows! Wishing you a happy new year!

  23. What a lovely dress! I am totally envious of how lovely that red makes your skin look.

Also, are those set-in sleeves? I must admit, I have been waiting to see something from you that didn't have kimono sleeves-- gussets or no, I find they're not flattering on me-- so now I'm extra excited to get this book!
