Knit Wrap Top Sew-Along #1: Supplies

It's that time! Time to begin gathering supplies for the sew-along. This top is relatively simple and few supplies are needed.
  • Pattern: Butterick 6285
  • Fabric: choose a lightweight moderate stretch jersey. The fabric pictured on the pattern envelope is a rayon spandex jersey, which can be purchased at Joann in red, grey or purple. Check the pattern page for how much to buy.
  • All purpose polyester thread to match your fabric.
  • Jersey or stretch needles.
  • A sewing machine with a straight stitch. No serger needed!
And that's it!

Trying to figure out what size to make? I would say this top is pretty typical to Butterick patterns (size chart here) in that you'll probably want to make a size smaller than your measurements. My measurements fall between a 12 and 14, but the 12 fits just fine. Actually, a size 10 fits fine too. There's more wiggle room with knits, of course. But if you're questio;/k,ning what size, I would err on the smaller side.

If you're looking for additional sources for knits, Joann always has nice rayon-spandex solids, and I really like the selection at Emma One Sock as well.

That's it for now. We'll begin sewing next week. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions!

  2. It is a pity your fabrics are not possible to buy for us who live in Europe!

  3. Well, I live in England and there are so many wonderful stretch fabrics to choose from. I will be buying mine from WhiteTreeFabrics.com who have wonderful jersey fabrics.

  4. I am going to join this sewalong but I will have to wait until November 27th to get the pattern, when it goes on sale at the local fabric store. I'm looking forward to making this cardigan. So cute!

  6. Love the blog and the fashion inspiration. Making a vintage dress circa late 1950's/early 1960-fitted bodice, full skirt. My question for the queen of vintage sewing-How do I calculate length knowing that a petticoat will hold the skirt out away from my body, hence appearing shorter? I am going for a mid calf (aka tea) length dress. Should I add 2-3" length to the dress so that with the length will appear correct? I know I could just hem the dress once it is done but the tulle and lining and such will be based on the finished dress length. Thoughts? Thanks so much

  7. That is gorgeous purple fabric! Love it! The fabric stores around me don't carry beautiful knits like that. But I do have a nice lightweight solid gray knit in my stash that would be perfect for this! I already have the pattern, so I'm set!

  9. Thanks for this sew-along! Does "moderate stretch" mean 4-way or something else? Jerseys perplex me.

  10. I went to the store to get some fabric for this sew along, and left with fabric for a suit jacket, wiggle dress, and blouse... Oops... I guess I'll have to find something from the home stash to use!

    1. Hi there, it depends on what size you're making. It tells you on the chart on the back of the pattern envelope, as well as on the pattern product page:

  12. So excited for this! I got the pattern so I can sew an office Christmas lunch party dress. I am glad you posted about the sizes because I was wondering about that and don't really have time to make a muslin. I can't wait to get started...hopefully cutting out the pattern tonight, but I also have to bake cookies :)
