Are You Going to the Sheep and Wool Festival?

I've only heard good things about the Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY, but I've never been. However, it's right up my alley: farm animals and fibers! I know it's more of a knitting thing (which I also enjoy), but there's stuff for sewing enthusiasts too. For instance, the famed Make It with Wool Contest.

Anyway! It's located right in my county, and I'm finally going to check it out this year. It's the weekend of October 19th. My publisher will be there (with my book!) and I'd love to hear if any of you readers will be there. Perhaps we can even have a meet up of sorts!

Attendees, please comment and let me know if you'll be there on Saturday the 19th or Sunday the 20th. Hope to see you there!

  1. I'm going on Saturday. We moved to the Adirondacks just last year and (though its not too close) I am very excited that I get to attend this event at last! See you there!

  2. I'm going on Saturday. I've been cheating on sewing with knitting. Basically, I'm a crafting floozy!

  3. I've wanted to go every year for the past 4/5 years but I've always been busy and I probably will be again this year :( my coworker will be going, though!

  4. I'll be there -- headed for the whole weekend with my knit circle. For the yarn...and booze. :)

  6. Might drive up--but it is a long way from Maryland!

Also, there is a Make it With Wool Contest in almost every state. I've been entering the Maryland one since I was 5!

  9. I'll be there on Saturday!

It's a really fun festival- tons of gorgeous sheep, yarns, foods, and dogs. (There's a whole show area for working dog trials... it's amazing).

    You'll love it!

  11. I will totally try and make it because my kids love farm animals and I love knitting and sewing. We just took a trip up your way a month back and my kids loved it. I don't think it will be a tough sell. Just have to fit it in with all the other stuff we have going on :)

  12. My husband and I will be there for a long weekend (camping nearby), we've gone every year since 2007. As a avid reader (mostly in lurker form), I would totally be down for a meet-up (either day). This might even inspire some sewing from one or both of us--we will definitely be sporting some of our hand knits/crochet (though what it is will be dictated by the weather).

  14. I'll be there on Sunday - can't wait to watch the "Sheep-to-Shawl" contest and test the hot sauce in the food barn. Been going for the last 10 years - love it! Get on line for the stuffed garlic artichoke and chicken pot pie (my favorites) as early as possible - the food line can be unbelievably long.

  16. My niece was a 4-H member in Kansas in the late 60's to mid 70's. She won the Make It with Wool Contest at the Kansas State fair when she was a teenager. She made a wool suit. Her maternal grandmother and her mother were both wonderful seamstresses, too. Just thought you would want to know the history of this contest. I know I had friends who entered this contest in the 50's in Kansas, too.

  17. Rhinebeck is the best thing ever! I think you'll really enjoy it. I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. Will you be doing a signing at all? I'll actually be up there signing my new knitting book, Metropolitan Knits. I'll make sure to say hi if I see you!

  18. I've been a few times, but stopped going when I noticed it was the same thing *exactly* every year. And I also got bummed out when I realized that it's really just a big yarn-mall. There's not that much exploration of wool as a material, or of the needle arts as craft: it's just a place to buy yarn. That said, when I decided I had had enough and went to sit on a bench and wait for my friends, I did get to watch a llama parade go by.

  19. I am coming all the way from Seattle to go for the first time! So excited! We're also visiting the in-laws in upstate and having a 5th anniversary couple of nights in the city...but I picked this weekend to travel because of Rhinebeck...I'm a knitter/spinner/former sheep raiser as well as a sewer.

  20. Hi Gertie. A little group of us knitting gals got together and travelled all the way from thee UK just for Rhinebeck
and we weren't disappointed. I thought you might like to know that when we travelled on the train out of NY, as we went through Beacon I thought of you. I also thought what a wonderful part of the States you are living in!

  23. I go every year with my best friend Julie. There is a lot of yarn for sale, but there's other things too. It's a beautiful ride through the best part of New York State. I have your book - bringing it with me just in case! Hope to meet you there.

  26. Awwww! Now I'm really bummed because I decided to not enter the MIWW contest this year. I was in the 2012 National MIWW contest, and it was such an awesome experience! I hadn't competed in the contest and decided to because I really wanted to delve into the couture techniques and ended up winning at the district and state levels, which meant I could go on to the National level!! I was so shocked because I hadn't really ever considered that next level up, but it was one of my most enjoyable memories of 4-H. You should definitely watch the fashion show!!
