Upcoming Events in California and Ann Arbor, MI!

Happy New Year, readers! Now that 2013 is here, it's time to look towards some upcoming fun. I have two trips planned for this month. Perhaps I'm coming to your neck of the woods and we can meet in person?

  • Anaheim, CA! I'll be there for the Craft and Hobby Association winter conference on Saturday, January 12th. I'll be there with Butterick (who is the fabulous publisher of my line "Patterns by Gertie"). Butterick is celebrating their 150th anniversary (did you know that Ebenezer Butterick, the company's founder, created the first graded home sewing pattern in 1863?). I'll be doing a book signing in their booth.

  • On to Los AngelesSew L.A. is throwing me a party on Sunday, January 13th! (Click image above for details.) They've gone all out, with a retro picnic theme and a makeup artist to do vintage looks. It only sounds like the best party ever, so I hope you will be there.
  • I'll then be spending a couple days in the L.A. area and I want to do it up right! I'll definitely be visiting the What Katie Did Hollywood boutique and some vintage shops; let me know if you have other suggestions for my must-visit list.
  • Ann Arbor, MI! On Sunday, January 27th, I'm honored to be speaking at the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor Public Library. Book signing to follow. See details here

    1. But wait, the LA one sounds way more fun. If you have time, visit South Coast Plaza while you're in Orange County. :-)

  11. Hi Gertie, I'm so excited that you'll be coming to California. =) I'm looking forward to meeting you in Anaheim and LA. You must visit Old Town Orange. They have some of the most amazing vintage shops.

  12. If you get a chance you should have a cocktail at Varnish, in downtown LA's historic district. It's inside Cole's, a century-old bar/restaurant. (Plus it's close to the Fashion District -- tons of fabric shops.)

  15. I'm assuming you are going Downtown to check out some of the fabric stores, millinery places, etc. Its in south Downtown but north Downtown, including whats known as Little Tokyo there are a ton of new restaurants, coffee places, bars etc. Now that they've been rehabing a lot of downtown for lofts a lot of new stuff has followed. There is a subway to get around and a DASH bus line, if you aren't renting a car. Once you are downtown and you need a place to relax for a bit check out the Hotel Figeuroa, it has the most amazing architecture and decor, and walk out back/through the lobby to have a drink by the gorgeous pool.

I don't want to write a comment novel but one of my favorite things to do here as an LA native is go to the Korean spas. I know they also have them in New York, so maybe you have been, but I love to go to them here in LA, so relaxing and chill. My favorite, and one of the most expensive at $30 an entrance fee is Crystal Spa, but I love those unlimited towels.

I'm interested in what other people post, and I might post more, but let me know if you have questions, as I was born and raised here. I'm looking forward to coming to the Sew LA party! I hope its okay to bring our books that we already bought to have signed.

  16. The vintage shopping in Old Town Orange is the best, also retro row in Long Beach is great too. You should probably also check out Remix shoes in LA as well.

  17. Yay, I was hoping your book would bring you to LA! I can't wait to meet you at Sew LA!

Like Liberty, I don't want to write a novel, but there's a ton of great stuff here (if you have the right info and avoid the touristy stuff). The fabric district is great, though since you have one in NYC it may not be as big a deal. As for fabric shops in other areas, I'd skip Mood and go to International Silks & Woolens instead. If you're here on Sunday, the Jet Rag dollar sale is a classic -- I've actually scored great vintage there. I also recommend the Pinup Girl Boutique on Magnolia in Burbank -- there are a lot of great vintage/thrift stores in the area as well. As for food, we have outstanding sushi, Korean BBQ, Thai, you name it. I'm going to shut up now. See you on the 13th!

I live in Anaheim, and would love to see you too, but thought the CHA convention is not open to the public? That it is a vendor event?

  24. Can't wait to see you at Sew LA, one of my favorite LA spots.
While in town and if you have a free night, stop by La Descarga for a true vintage LA experience. It's so much fun and dress code is enforced. :) http://ladescargala.com/

  25. If you are a beer kind of girl, you must visit the Anaheim Brewery. It is fashioned after the original brewery before prohibition. We have a wonderful downtown that is being revitalized with lots of vintage and historic details. If you are bringing your guy along he can enjoy an old fashioned cut and shave at Barbeer Shop.

  26. Of course. Of course you would be in A2 when I'll be out of town...in Los Angeles! And I'm in LA now for crying out loud!! Apparently we are not destined to meet.

  27. It just so happens I am going to be in LA that weekend! I'm going to try to come. I'm going with my husband and brother in law, so maybe I can dump them off at a bar somewhere.

    1. Amy, Sew L.A. is in Atwater Village, a relatively newly trendy part of L.A., so there are plenty of bars you could drop the menfolk at. The Bigfoot Lodge, The Tiki-Ti, The Roost, Good Luck Bar and The Griffin are all ones in the vicinity that are pretty popular (I've been to all of them except The Roost, although I'm going there for a friend's birthday party tomorrow.) Check Yelp for the hours since some might not be open on Sunday. See you at Sew LA!

  30. I can't wait for Sunday at Sew L.A.! I also have a couple of nightlife suggestions.

If you're up for a drink, go to The Edison (www.edisondowntown.com/) and you may catch a couple of people decked out fedoras and suspenders. Also, the new Emerson Theatre is opening tomorrow (http://www.emersontheatre.com/) and I'm not sure what to expect, but the video is intriguing and the bar looks gorgeous...
