California Adventure

Good morning, readers! I'm writing this from lovely Los Angeles. I've had a whirlwind few days! I arrived on Friday afternoon and drove to Anaheim for the Craft & Hobby Association show.
Remember how I was making my design, Butterick 5814? Well, I finally finished it on the plane. (Don't worry, I'm going to do some more proper posts on it, plus that 3/4 length sleeve tutorial.) I desperately wanted to wear it that night, since I was going to Butterick's company dinner. They're celebrating their 150th anniversary! I finished it just in time to take a cell phone pic (I call it "Self Portrait with Toilet") and then rush down to dinner, where I had the most amazing time catching up with the Butterick/McCalls folks.

I wore it with a vintage cardigan since it was chilly.

Also, another week, another shade of pink hair! My last dye job was looking weirdly patchy (purple-magenta in places, pink in others) so I went for an emergency touch-up before my trip. We used a mix of Special Effects Atomic Pink, Cupcake Pink, and Cherry Bomb. I think I've found my perfect color!

The next day I had my book signing at the Butterick booth! I wore the scallop waist skirt and Peter Pan collar blouse from my book.

I met some kindred spirits.

And caught up with friends, old and new. (That's Haley from The Zen of Making on the left there.)

I also got to see my friends from Creativebug!

Yesterday was my big party at Sew L.A.! It was fabulous, to say the least.

Christine Haynes and the other ladies there went all out with a retro picnic-theme. I put tons of garments from the book and my Butterick line on display.

Everyone came all decked out in their retro finery!

See more fab pics on Christine's blog. Thank you so much, Sew L.A.!
Now I'm heading out for a couple days of exploring Los Angeles, starting with the garment district. (I'm sure I need more fabric, right?)

  4. I am, once again, in love with your rose-print shirt-dress. & I want blue dip-dyed hair (nothing as bright as yours, as chemical sensitvities preclude using bleach!).

  9. I love that you wear your book's sample garments in "real life". ;-) And are those new tattoos that I spy on your feet? I'm always checking out which shoes you pair with your outfits, and this is the first time I've noticed the anchors.

  13. Gertie, what sewing stuff can you take as carry-on on the plane without the TSA having a problem with it? I've wanted to do that for years, but haven't yet figured out a way to get away with it.

    2. Hi there! You can take scissors with up to a 5" blade. I bring small embroidery scissors, hand sewing needles, and thread. Pins in a project are fine. I haven't had any problems!

  14. As a new sewer I found your blog a couple of months back and didn't realise that you have you own line in butterick until yesterday,so it's funny that this post came out today hehe:)
I love everything you do, the dress pattern is adorable

  16. I'm also a new sewer, and I was happy to take a peek at all of your designs in person. I wore my red Beignet skirt, but had no top to wear with it. I fell in love with the pink keyhole blouse that you had on display!

I can't wait to make my own and start on every one of your designs. :) Maybe I can make a Diane's Newer Blog for Mediocre Sewing?

  28. Am attempting to comment unanonymously but it doesn't seem to be working -- wanted to ask whether you'll be doing any more signings here in LA? To my great chagrin I've only just found this blog post. Oh, and don't forget to check out Michael Levine in the fabric district!

  31. Gertie, please help me! I am dabbling in the art of making shirt waist dresses and I need help figuring out what kind of fabric to use. I love the photo you have attached in the post with the red floral print (the short sleeve dress), I like the way that fabric hangs, what kind of fabric is it?

    Thank you!
