The Panty Express
Apparently a ticket to Panty Land is one-way only. I am obsessed! I can't stop! After we chatted yesterday, I finished the black and pink pair I started.
Then I thought it would be fun to mix it up with some polka dot cotton jersey.
Today I tried something completely different: silk taffeta for the center front panel!
(I'm pretty sure these are my masterpiece, by the way.) The Betty Pattern says you can use wovens cut on the bias for the center panels. I used this taffeta for the center only, and didn't have to make any fitting changes. The back is all sheer!
Sadly, I think the sex appeal may be lost on Jeff. When I showed him, he said, "Wow, those are some tall granny panties." I'm trying to train him to say "pin-up panties" rather than "granny panties." I'm not feeling optimistic about my success in that arena.
What's interesting is how much the fit changes with different fabrics. Super stretchy ones (like the polka dot jersey) result in a super-high fit. Firmer fabrics give you a (relatively) lower waist.
Anyway! I'm dying to make a matching bra for the red and black pair. Can't you just see it?
I also tried adapting my muslin into a hipster-height panty. I just took about 4" off the waistline. It worked well, but they're just not as saucy as the others! Of course, they need a few bows still.
P.S. I should mention that the majority of my stretch fabrics are from Spandex World. They seem to have a comprehensive online ordering system. The elastics are from Sew Sassy, and the ribbons are from my stash.
i've never seen granny panties that cute before.
ReplyDeleteLMAO @"tall granny panties".... I love a man who doesn't hold back! lol!! I think your collection of PINUP dainties are very excellent indeed!!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband feels the same way about those panties, but I love them! No VPL when they fit well.
ReplyDeleteLove the contrasting fabrics, trim, placement - everything!
My boyfriend also calls then granny pants haha why don't they get that they are actually super sexy! Oh well, silly boys!
ReplyDeleteCute tip on the woven center panel...I bet this would apply to lot of patterns not just this panty pattern...I'm thinking skirts, tops...and that would be a blog topic itself - how you can slip a woven pattern piece in your stretch knit/jersey project.
ReplyDeleteOhmyGodohmyGodohmyGodohmyGodOhmyGodohmyGodohmyGodohmyGodOhmyGodohmyGodohmyGodohmyGodOhmyGodohmyGodohmyGodohmyGod adinfinitem.....
ReplyDeleteI love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them I love them..............................................................................................
ReplyDeleteDo we need to start telling the boys how dorky they look in tighty whities!
ReplyDeleteReally cute pin up panties.
Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Those are gorgeous! Just wait till Jeff SEES you in them ;)
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous! I'm no Modest Millie, but seriously... if more women wore drawers like these, the world would be a better-dressed place. Who would have the heart to wear a wife beater and yoga pants to the supermarket with a pair of these underneath?
ReplyDeletepanties are very addicting to sew! I love all your variations! And thanks for the link to Spandex world!
ReplyDeleteI really find hi-waisted, what we call here in Australia "full-brief" knickers the most comfortable. No wedgies, no having to (or wishing to) yank them out from "the uncomfortable zone" all day. But alas... my husband also thinks they look like grandma pants and really doesn't like them. Sigh! Yours look adorable to me!
ReplyDeleteThat ticket is 1 way! It's what started my knits craze and look at what happened. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are so pretty! Love what you've done!
ReplyDeleteYou are on a roll! Love the red and black ones :) Best of luck with training Jeff ;)
ReplyDeleteThey are just amazing, totally inspirational. How I wish I had your skill and talent, there would be no more visits to M&S.
ReplyDeleteMeh, boys. For them it's all about perceived ease of access. Such subtle creatures! If you make a pair with lace-ups on one side, he will love them! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jeff here, they are granny panties (from the 50's)! Beautiful, but too big to be sexy... Maybe you could try 4" shorter, see what happens to Jeff, hahaha!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat work, Gerthie, and saving money, there!
I LOVE this pattern! I have been using for a couple of months now and don't think I'll ever go back to buying panties (hehe! this is kinda a funny word in OZ) again! I've also made them as gifts for friends and everyone loves them.
ReplyDeletePS Has he actually seen them ON? Things over here certainly changed once the frock came off and he saw I'd paired them with a WKD bullet bra, let me tell you...
ReplyDeleteAaah, they're adorable! Suddenly I need pin-up panties... Also, and forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what kind of needles do you use when sewing these?
ReplyDeleteI really loves these I have always tried to make my own pattern but it never works. You are very talented.
ReplyDeleteLove the panties, would look great with matching bra! Being able to create your own lingerie is a talent. The possibilities are endless. When I'm looking fancy underneath my clothes I feel really girly and get this 'I've got a secret' smile. I'm working on making my own bras and then I will move on to making matching panties. I'm sew excited!
ReplyDeleteGertie - if you are thinking of making bras, would you do a sewalong? I am dying to try it but find the idea rather daunting. A sewalong would be brilliant. BTW, I love the pinup panties too, though as I am granny age, I suppose anything I wear is granny pants!
ReplyDeleteLove them! The sheer ones are awesome, how can Jeff not like them?
ReplyDeleteSew Sassy is pretty awesome, eh? I've always had good service.
Oh my! One of these panties is better than the other. They're all so wonderful. But the best is that one with the polka dots. I'm stunned. Hugs from Miss Maple
ReplyDeleteLove them and something else to add to my wishlist..........the pattern I mean; thanks yet again for bringing something new into our world of sewing.
ReplyDeleteI am sure Jeff loves them to, how could he not!
Great idea as Christmas gifts too. Will have to try and find sources of supplies in the U.K.
Counting down the days until your book arrives Gertie. I should imagine your booksales are progressing nicely now.
All the best and kindest regards.
If you find a source in the uk, please let us know! :-)
DeleteLOVE these! Think they all look gorgeous, but then, to me after wearing knickers for pregnancy last year and now a maternity bra all of this year, all knickers look so pretty. Can't wait to see how your bras turn out. I have a'thing' for matching sets.

Love them. I showed my husband. The first thing out of his mouth was "Granny Panties" Humph. Boys are dumb.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the panties, not to speak of your blog, where I have learned lots! I am from Sweden so I´m not completely familiar with the difference in fabrics when searching Spandex World; the different names of the fabrics are a bit of a mystery to me. What would you recommend for the side panels/ front?
ReplyDeleteDear Gertie,
ReplyDeleteSo impressed that I have nominated you for a One Lovely Blog Award (see note on my blog).
Have a great week.
Wow! they are simply gorgeous! I especially love the black-red one. I've ordered the pattern this morning and hope to have some free hour to make 'em. you're so inspiring as always! Can I'm going to love you more? :)
ReplyDeleteWow! they look so professional,You remind me of myself in that you want to make everything!, dresses, corsets, petticoats, hats.... and I wouldn't be surprised if you have investigated shoe-making classes!
ReplyDeleteWow, these are lovely! I need to give them a go. You definitely need to work on Jeff's opinion - tall granny panties really doesn't do these justice! lol
ReplyDeleteWow these are amazing, I love them! So beautifully made to! XxxX http://thesecondhandrose.blogspot.co.uk
ReplyDeleteThese look like so much fun! I've been oogling Ohhh Lulu's patterns for a while now and am definitely snapping a few up soon :)
ReplyDeleteI just preordered your book by the way, really looking forward to it <3
so flirty! file this one under "reasons to learn how to use my serger"...
ReplyDeleteGertie - your pin-up panties are entirely saucy, and I hope Jeff awakens to this notion soon. And I love how much fun you have with sewing - refreshing!
ReplyDeleteDo people who don't like "moist" say "damp cake?" I feel neutral about "panties"--it does sound a little saucy. I loathe "seamster."
ReplyDelete"I'm trying to train him to say "pin-up panties" rather than "granny panties."
ReplyDeleteStory of my life!
I LOVE all your gorgeous high waist creations! I have got to get over my fear and make some. I've just decided that high-waist is the way to go. I'm tired of underwear lines and shifting panties.
ReplyDeleteYour pin-up panties (Am I right ?) are gorgeous, specially the red and black one. I guess I finally have a good reason to buy a serger !
ReplyDeleteUm, training Jeff will work MUCH faster if you're wearing the panties when you explain the sex appeal. Just sayin'.
