The Panty Express


Apparently a ticket to Panty Land is one-way only. I am obsessed! I can't stop! After we chatted yesterday, I finished the black and pink pair I started.

Then I thought it would be fun to mix it up with some polka dot cotton jersey.

Today I tried something completely different: silk taffeta for the center front panel!

(I'm pretty sure these are my masterpiece, by the way.) The Betty Pattern says you can use wovens cut on the bias for the center panels. I used this taffeta for the center only, and didn't have to make any fitting changes. The back is all sheer!

Sadly, I think the sex appeal may be lost on Jeff. When I showed him, he said, "Wow, those are some tall granny panties." I'm trying to train him to say "pin-up panties" rather than "granny panties." I'm not feeling optimistic about my success in that arena.

What's interesting is how much the fit changes with different fabrics. Super stretchy ones (like the polka dot jersey) result in a super-high fit. Firmer fabrics give you a (relatively) lower waist.

Anyway! I'm dying to make a matching bra for the red and black pair. Can't you just see it?

I also tried adapting my muslin into a hipster-height panty. I just took about 4" off the waistline. It worked well, but they're just not as saucy as the others! Of course, they need a few bows still.



P.S. I should mention that the majority of my stretch fabrics are from Spandex World. They seem to have a comprehensive online ordering system. The elastics are from Sew Sassy, and the ribbons are from my stash.

    My husband feels the same way about those panties, but I love them! No VPL when they fit well.

    Love the contrasting fabrics, trim, placement - everything!

    Cute tip on the woven center panel...I bet this would apply to lot of patterns not just this panty pattern...I'm thinking skirts, tops...and that would be a blog topic itself - how you can slip a woven pattern piece in your stretch knit/jersey project.

    These are gorgeous! I'm no Modest Millie, but seriously... if more women wore drawers like these, the world would be a better-dressed place. Who would have the heart to wear a wife beater and yoga pants to the supermarket with a pair of these underneath?

    I really find hi-waisted, what we call here in Australia "full-brief" knickers the most comfortable. No wedgies, no having to (or wishing to) yank them out from "the uncomfortable zone" all day. But alas... my husband also thinks they look like grandma pants and really doesn't like them. Sigh! Yours look adorable to me!

    I agree with Jeff here, they are granny panties (from the 50's)! Beautiful, but too big to be sexy... Maybe you could try 4" shorter, see what happens to Jeff, hahaha!!!

    I LOVE this pattern! I have been using for a couple of months now and don't think I'll ever go back to buying panties (hehe! this is kinda a funny word in OZ) again! I've also made them as gifts for friends and everyone loves them.

    Love the panties, would look great with matching bra! Being able to create your own lingerie is a talent. The possibilities are endless. When I'm looking fancy underneath my clothes I feel really girly and get this 'I've got a secret' smile. I'm working on making my own bras and then I will move on to making matching panties. I'm sew excited!

    Gertie - if you are thinking of making bras, would you do a sewalong? I am dying to try it but find the idea rather daunting. A sewalong would be brilliant. BTW, I love the pinup panties too, though as I am granny age, I suppose anything I wear is granny pants!

    Love them and something else to add to my wishlist..........the pattern I mean; thanks yet again for bringing something new into our world of sewing.

    I am sure Jeff loves them to, how could he not!
    Great idea as Christmas gifts too. Will have to try and find sources of supplies in the U.K.

    LOVE these! Think they all look gorgeous, but then, to me after wearing knickers for pregnancy last year and now a maternity bra all of this year, all knickers look so pretty. Can't wait to see how your bras turn out. I have a'thing' for matching sets.

    Absolutely love the panties, not to speak of your blog, where I have learned lots! I am from Sweden so I´m not completely familiar with the difference in fabrics when searching Spandex World; the different names of the fabrics are a bit of a mystery to me. What would you recommend for the side panels/ front?
