Goings On

A few odds and ends! First, here is my first official portrait with my bicycle. Isn't she cute? I've decided that her name is Peggy Olson. I rode over to Peoples Bicycle yesterday, and found that amazing cherry blossom print saddle bag. It's like it was made for Peggy! The shop owner, Jon, was so excited that he took my picture. Peggy and I have gone for several joy rides lately and we're like two peas in a pod.

Also!  I have some writings and tutorials up various places on the interwebs:

  • Check out my lapped side zipper tutorial on the Coats & Clark blog.
  • Last week, I asked the question "does the phrase 'not your grandma's knitting' bother you?" I got so many great responses that I wrote a follow-up post at STC Craft incorporating comments and thoughts from readers. Thanks for your insights, as always!
Last, but not least: have an awesome weekend! May the sewing goddesses be with you.

  3. Lovely! I just recently got a retro style Schwinn and decided it needs a basket on front similar to yours. Where did you get that one? Now, I need to come up with a fun name for my bike!

  8. I love Peggy Olson!! Your bike is so cute! And your panniers are super-adorable. Yay for cycling!

  9. You and your bike look like perfect companions! I have a question about lapped zippers. Can they be used in the back of a dress? Or a skirt? How do you handle the facing or lining?

  10. Hey Gertie, you accidentally linked to your zipper tutorial rather than the follow-up post--I'd really like to see it!

  11. Love Peggy! The saddlebags are perfect. I've rode my bike twice to the office this week and my saddlebags came in super handy.

  12. love Peggy Olson, my partner and I have two folding bikes called Betty and Brian. All my bikes are called Betty so when his mother gave me her electric bike we called her Betty euroglide lol We only ever refer to them by their names and I am sure people think we are talking about other people.

  13. I am sure you have an equally amazing helmet to match Peggy and the saddle bags, right? I don't see it in the picture....

  14. Yes, moms, I have a helmet! It was on the ground and I cropped it out of the pic.

  15. Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of bike is that? It's cute, but I'm kinda out of touch about bikes. thanks.

  16. Peggy Olson? Is that the name of Mad Men character? I'm a fan!
Anyway....love your bike! I'm a city biker too, my bike is less fashion than yours, but here, in Bologna, I have to make my bike as ugly as possible....so I can hope that, maybe, none will steal her from me!

  17. Peggy Olson is lovely, I hope you two will enjoy many, many happy travels!

I'm like Lavinia, I have to make my bike as unappealing to bike thieves as possible. I lock it up with 3 locks and remove my seat and saddle bag whenever I relucantly leave it somewhere for any period of time.

  18. Oh I love your bike so much. Plus I agree - that saddle bag was just made for her!

  19. We saw a fab bike yesterday but it was 400euros. May have to wait a while. :o)

  20. To be a stickler for detail, that kind of a bag that goes on either side of a back rack is called a pannier. A saddlebag for a bike attaches to the back of the seat (saddle).

  21. Enjoy your blog very much, I'm always amazed at how you can find a pattern to match any dress. Found THE cherry fabric on line, but it was a 1000 meter minimum. Do you think you could get 394 of your readers to each order 3 yards as a group effort? ;o) Have you seem the May 2012 issue of Reminisce magazine? It has a wonderful article by Jeanne Herrick, a lady who won a McCalls sewing contest in 1952 and a trip to Paris. Her design is incredible. Her article reminds me of you. It also has an article on a 1950 catalog with great pics and a killer photo of Lucille Ball. Thought you'd enjoy. Reminisce.com/vintage-fashion.

  22. your zipper tutorial is so timely! i'm a total grown-up clothes novice and i want to make a 3/4 circle skirt. i have no idea how to do the waist but know i don't want to do an elastic casing. i've been flirting with the idea of putting in a zipper, but wasn't sure how. i think with your tutorial i can! i guess the question is do i put in a waistband or not. (also, i have no idea if i should measure out my actual waist or do my waist measurement less 2-4" for bias stretch... thoughts? i'm using linen.)

    also, totally heart peggy.

  23. Love the bike! Pink is your color! I've gotta bike but I wonder do they make sidecars for kids to sit in anymore? LOL

  24. Ohhhhh Gertie! I signed up for your Starlet class! Finally! Tell me I can do this??

    Thanks,

  25. I love your bicycle! And it got even more perfect with the pink pannier/saddlebags. :) I like bikes that have a basket at the front, it's very convenient. I'd love to get a bike like yours! I used to go everywhere by bicycle when I was in Japan, but since we got back to live in France we don't have any. I miss cycling...

  26. Oh I love Peggy - she looks like my own dear Bettsy Boo - She had red roses with green leaves tattooed on her seat, and was a model called 'old favourite'. I was a bit disappointed at the time I was given her (very second hand), at age 7, I spraypainted her kelly green (to match the leaves) as soon as I could convince my parents, and she lives on in my nostalgic memory. Now of course, we can get something similar with gears, which is a blessing - I had the biggest calf muscles from all those hills!

  27. The bike Peggy is so cute. And the print saddle bag really match with the bike well.
