Week in Review {4.20.12}

Well, it's been a doozy of a week. The idea of blogging has confounded me because, well, there's just too much muchness. How would I pick a topic? I think the remedy is to write a post all about me me me and just get it out of my system. Okay, here's what's been going on.

  • Let's start with the good news. My sewing room is finally ready to move into! I ripped up the carpet, smoothed the subfloor with wood filler, sanded the whole thing with an industrial sander I rented (that was an interesting day), painted three base coats, and then stenciled on top. Whew! If I do say so myself, it looks beautiful.

  • I want to start offering private lessons in my home studio, so if you're around the Dutchess County area and might be interested, please let me know!
  • Okay, now for the not-so-good stuff. Jeff and I adopted a dog last weekend: a big, goofy, adorable lab/boxer mix named Phillip. We had him home for four days, and he started having behavioral problems during the afternoons: barking, whining, storming through the house like a hurricane, biting, etc. I called his former foster mom to discuss what was going on and ask for advice. It turned out that the time that Phillip was freaking out was the time of day that her two sons would come home from school, take Phillip (and his best doggy friend Gage) down to the creek, where they would play for hours with about 10-20 other kids and dogs. Obviously, this made him very happy. The foster family missed him sorely and told me that if we wanted to bring him back, they would adopt him permanently. Readers, it was obvious what we had to do. We tearfully drove Phillip back to his new forever home and said our goodbyes. Jeff and I adore animals and we never thought we'd be returning a dog we adopted. But it was obviously the right choice and Phillip is happy, so that's what's important. We miss you, Philly!

  • The cats are happy again, too. (OMG, how handsome does Henry look on that floor?!)

  • My dad is having his third brain surgery on Monday. They're going to remove his latest tumor and implant some sort of radiated seeds in his brain, which sounds very sci-fi to me. He's very resilient--stubbornly so, actually. So I can't worry about him too much. But if you think to send him some good thoughts in Arizona, please do. Feel better, Dad!
  • Wow, sewing stuff seems so minor after that last one, but let's get back to some fluffier content. I finished Simplicity 1803 last night. That's the Kate Spade-inspired LBD I wrote about last week. I'm going to wear it today and get some pictures taken that I can share with you!
  • I ordered a cotton-candy pink necklace to wear with it from this etsy shop. I can't wait for it to arrive.

  • I made cheery new pillow covers.
  •  I've been making napkins too.
  • There's a lot more home dec stuff I could show you. A pink coffee table! Skull stencils! A treadle sewing machine table! But I actually have to run and grab a train into the city. I'm teaching a private lesson and then I have my millinery class at FIT. Thanks for listening, readers.
Have a great weekend!

  1. I am *seething* with envy over that floor. We have gone around and around about floor selection for my future basement studio (construction of which has been unfortunately delayed, but shall not be derailed!!). I'd thought hardwoods, but then maybe tile with radiant heat. Now we've been leaning toward cork, but this makes me think that a painted floor beats them all into the ground! So beautiful.

Sad news about Phillip, but what a life he must have with those boys. Your doggie is out there--maybe still in SoCal!

Loving & healing thoughts for your dad!

  2. Yes, healing thoughts for your dad. I had a similar situation with a dog, adopted her and found she wouldn't be as happy with us. It's really hard.

Your floor is insane and I'm so jealous.

  3. Your floor is BEAUTIFUL!!!

I hear you about Phillip. We've been looking after a friend's cat this week and our two are really not happy about it. Not in a "they'll get over it" way but in a "when can we take him home so that they calm down?" way; if we'd adopted this cat, he would have had to go back. Sometimes it's just kinder.

And I hope your dad's much better soon.

  4. That floor is incredible. What stencil did you use? Mind sharing where you got it?

  5. Love the floor! Can't wait to see the dress!
As for the dog, what you did was incredibly generous and right. I'm sure there is a puppy out there that will be very lucky to get you as owners!
And hugs to you. I hope your dad will be alright. Sending him many positive thoughts.

  6. You did such a great job on that floor! It looks amazing!

Hope the sci-fi stuff works for your dad, it's sounds pretty cool.

  7. That floor is AMAZABALLS! Absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to see your version of Simplicity 1803--I bought it awhile back and have yet to take a crack at it. And kudos to you for realizing what Phillip needed and putting his needs before your own--not a lot of would-be dog owners/parents do that.

  8. Damn girl, that floor looks gooooood. Can't wait to see the finished room! I think you should show us pictures of your whole house - the little snippets I see are amazing!

I hope everything goes well with your dad's surgery!

  9. holy cow gretchen. much love to your dad. i'll be sending good vibes from just a state away so they'll be extra strong.

my parents had a great big boy just like your dog; they could be twins, so much energy, he was almost neurotic. y'all were right, he must love playing with all those kids.

    your floor is droolworthy.

  10. Cool napkins - I just sewed my first batch of cloth napkins this week too. I found some linen remnants at the fabric store and made 4 green and 8 white linen napkins. It was some oddly satisfying process sewing.

  11. Best wishes to your dad for a speedy recovery. I cannot believe how fantastic those floors look! Me want. Now.

Sorry about the doggie bust. There's another out there for you that's a better fit.

  12. Sending good healing vibes out to your Dad.

Your floor is just amazing! I'd love to see more of your home decor projects you've done (pink coffee table! skull stencils!! exclamation point!!!!!)

  13. The floor is amazing! It's a sad thing for you regarding Phillip, but lucky that the foster family wanted him - seems like a happy outcome for him.
Good thoughts just sent toward Arizona for your dad!
Can't wait to see more of your home projects!

  14. I'm so sorry to hear about this incredibly stressful and emotional time. It must be gut-wrenching to have to make that decision over Phillip. I am sending your dad all sorts of good vibes from the UK. I can't believe how productive you've been in the face of all this! Though maybe that's your coping mechanism. I hope you're taking time for yourself, also.

  15. oh Gertie, I went through something similar with my mother 6 months ago (she is doing very well now) and let me tell you, I almost stopped blogging entirely. I felt that if she needed me, then I would devote myself to helping her. As I said, she is doing VERY well now. Hang in there!

Now. Floor sanding. WTF?? Seriously, I tried it once and returned the rental and hired someone to do it. Hats off to you.

#3 I cannot believe how many things I relate to in your post today because I went through the same thing with a dog about 10 years ago and it was truly one of the lowest points of my life. My heart goes out to you (and of course, your father)

smile at the pretty floor, it will get you through this.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You stenciled the floor!!?? I love it! Was that hard? Where did you get the stencil? I would love any tips/websites/tutorials/details you have.

    ReplyDelete
  17. That floor is the tits! (I mean that in a good way!), I'm jealous...
Meanwhile, the dog thing sucks - my cat ran away, and I'm gutted I don't have my kitty anymore, but I live in a flat, and she's much happier where she is now, so I just have to suck it up and deal with it..
Irradiated seeds? Now that sounds interesting, if a little odd - and I hope it works!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You have so much on your plate! I don't know how you manage to get all this beautiful sewing done and still deal with the stressors you have going on! Such beautiful things! I do hope you post some tutorials and/or lengthier posts on the home dec type items you are working on! It would be great to see hear more about how you managed to make that floor so beautiful! I'll keep you father in my prayers!

  19. Oh my goodness, what a week! Your floor is so lovely, and I hope you share more home dec with us. A pink coffee table sounds fabulous!

Sorry to hear about Phillip, he sure is a looker.

Sending lots of positive energy and good thoughts to your dad. I hope your next week is a bit more relaxing for you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. What a week you had!

It's wonderful you provided such good guardianship for the dog's well-being, it speaks so well of you.

I would love to see a how-to on stenciling the floor as your floor looks amazing.

  21. wow, busy week. Your floor looks amazing!! I'd love to see more of your new house--it sounds like you are working so hard on it.

I'm sorry to hear Philip had to go, he was darling. But you definitely did the right thing, and it sounds like he went back to an amazing home. I hope you can find another doggy that fits well with your family. It took a few weeks for my dog and cat to become freinds.

Sending out prayers for your father Gertie. :)

  22. Aw... I'm so sorry about the puppy and your dad! :/ Sending good thoughts and well wishes your dad's way!

It's amazing how quickly animals worm their way into your heart. When we adopted our black lab mix, within days he was ill and diagnosed with a very serious illness. We were told he had a 50/50 chance of living (and the result of his illness could have complications as he ages). It was a really sad time for us (though he did pull through thanks in part to an amazing vet hospital we took him to). So you have my sympathy, even though our situations weren't exactly the same.

I'm loving your floor so much!!!! We've been randomly talking about buying a house (so not going to happen any time soon, just because of what my husband does that requires us to move every few years), and this is one of the things I really want to do if we find a place with non-carpeted floors. So chic!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Shoo, big week indeed! I love the floor. So much that I may just have to do it in MY studio... :)

Phillip has a happy home, and yours is now open for a puppy who doesn't!

And, most importantly, best best happy good thoughts for your dad. Hang in there!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I definitely think you did the right thing for Phillip. You could have made it work, I'm sure, but to know that he was going to a family that was crazy about him allows for a huge peace of mind. I think you'll find the right dog for you and Jeff soon :)

And also, best wishes for your father. It sounds like a really pretty incredible procedure!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You guys did the right thing with your dog - sometimes the hardest part is knowing when to let go! Sending lots of good will for your dad's recovery as well =) Oh, and that floor? WOW. I can't wait to see your LBD!

    ReplyDelete
  26. You make the floor sound so easy. I've thought about doing mine for years but the thought of it....wow. It's beyond me.

I will turn all my good thoughts toward the southwest. The things are so hard but coming through them will make it all worthwhile.

I'm sorry to say that I am so proud of Phillip for being able to tell you what was happening, and proud of you and your husband for recognizing that he was. Those days with his boys and his best bud sound utterly pastoral -- I'd be barking and biting up a storm myself, as a human, to get back there. How kind you are to make Phillip's dreams return. This is an amazing story and I hope you'll be able to find it a happy ending one day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You did the right thing about Phillip - they need their old friends, doggy and otherwise. And I swear they have an alarm clock in their heads when it comes to walk time, or food time. Our neighbour's dog arrives here at 3.30pm every day to join us for a walk!
Thinking about your father, and praying for a speedy recovery for him.

  28. Oh. My. Lordthatfloor! Wow....Henry is gorgeous against it. That floor is Christmas-card-photo quality :) Well done! Skull stencil....oooooo. How brave of you two, to return Phillip to his Happy Stomping Grounds. My soninlaw is looking to do something similar with Riley...a 2yrold Pittie/Boxer Mix. He is such a sweet-tempered Brindle-Baby, good with cats, dogs, small children. But he is a very high energy dog & with the osteoarthritis in my knees I can't give him the attention he needs. Soninlaw is just too damn lazy to do so, so a meet&greet is scheduled for tomorrow with a potential adoptive family (with breed experience & a buddy for Riley to roughhouse with). Told soninlaw that if he must needs have a dog, Yonkers Shelter has quite a few.....Brightest thoughts & golden good luck to you Father!

  30. Wow! Where to start? Firstly sending positive wishes to your dad all the way from Marrakech in N.Africa. I love your stencilled floor so much I can`t tell you! So sad to hear about your adopted dog but sounds like you did the right thing and I`m sure he is happy which is the main thing. Can`t wait to see the latest reveal from the sewing room.

  31. I love that floor! I think you could have another career doing floors like that if you wanted. I am hoping for the best for your dad, as well as hoping you can find the right dog for you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow! So much in one week. Always seems to go that way, doesn't it. Thoughts and prayers for you, your dad and your furry friend situation!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Love you floor Dear Gertie and I hope things slow down a little for you. Don't feel bad about the dog and you were lucky the foster family took him back so you can really feel good he got the right family. I'll say a prayer for you Dad and hope he come out of this for many years to come.

  34. I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's health difficulties. That is a very difficult thing to go through. Sending him good vibes from Canada.
As tough as it was to take him back, you did a very loving thing for Phillip. There is another wonderful dog waiting out there for you.
Finally, the floor. I don't know how to gasp in print. *gasp* maybe? It is beautiful. I can't imagine the hours it took to do this. Sreiously a work of floor art if I have ever seen one.
Congratulations for getting through that hell-of-a week and thank you for sharing a slice of your life with us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I LOVE the floor! I can hardly beleive you did that yourself. It really looks good. My son painted his floor but I don't think he sanded, maybe that makes the difference. His paint is wearing off in places. Hm.
I think you definitely did the right thing for Phillip : )
Sorry about your dad, I hope all goes well. I love your blog, I didn't think anybody sewed anymore and then I find a whole world of sewers on the internet!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow! so many ups and downs, it's amazing you can see straight. Sorry about the dog, it's tragic when that happens, but in this case so very good that he's going to a home where he is loved.
I'm sure with your support and his great strength, your dad will recover. In the meantime, make yourself feel better by wearing that pink necklace in the sewing room with the most gorgeous painted floor in the world!

  37. Gertie, that floor is spectabulous!!! You so did the right thing about Phillip, even though I KNOW it must have been bittersweet... I hope that the sci-fi seeds are successful for your Dad.

You inspire me! I've done a muslin for the wrap dress - and will post when I finally complete it.....

  38. That floor is amazing. I can see a lot of hours spent on stenciling. It so beautiful and inspiring.
I think you made the right choice to leave Phillip at his old home. Maybe you can adopt another one that will live with you later.
Hope your dad will be better soon. /Therese

  43. Gretchen, I wanted to just pop in and wish your dad well wishes! I've lost a parent and understand that time is precious. Best of luck to him!

But now let's talk about that floor! WOW! It's AMAZING! I'm hoping you put some sort of clear coat on top of it to keep it looking good! Spectacular.

And Phillip clearly wanted to be with the other family too! It's all good, you'll find the right fit :)

  45. Gretchen,
Soooo sorry about your dad. I will keep all of your family in my prayers. And Phillip is where he will be happiest, so you definitely did the right (aka hard) thing. Kudos to you!

LOVE your floor. You know how to rock it, lady.

    smooches!!

  46. Sometimes you just have to get stuff out! The home decorating must be a thrill in your new ownership-position, and I hope it's a lot of fun!

I hope your pet family eventually finds another member, and it sounds like Philip will have a very happy time with his family.

And most importantly - all my best wishes for your very stubborn and resilient dad!

  50. What a roller coaster of a week. Clearly Phillip had found his forever home with the foster family, that's a really hard and unselfish thing for you to do.

I hope all goes well with your dad. We all need fluff around to decompress from the harder aspects in life.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You two were quite wonderful to do that for Phillip- and when the right, kitty loving pup, comes along, it will happen! Big Four Paws Up on doing the right thing. All mine are rescue so it is a tough thing.
Lots of good thoughts for your Dad, it is stressful no matter what so go easy on yourself on worrying!
Best of all have a great weekend and take it easy- we love you!

    ReplyDelete
  52. My! You've had quite the week. Good and healing thoughts for your dad!

What a wonderful thing you did for Philly. He's one lucky dog to have found his furever home. Your dog is out there. You will find the one.

    LOVE your floor!

  53. Tough week, Gretchen. Very Best to you, your husband and your father. Btw, bitchin' floor. ;-)

  54. First things first: The floor is AMAZING (my kids would say AMAZEBALLS). You totally did the right thing about the pup, but I hope you try again because there are dogs who like cats and some excellent rescues in your neck of the woods!
Finally, my friend had the same brain thing with the toxic wafers being put in the brain, and it has been a smashing success. Tumor killing futuristic wafers! Good thoughts to your dad.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I hope your dad does well, and I think you made the best possible choice for the dog, but I am sure it was a difficult one.

  56. Wow Gertie, that floor looks amazing! You did a wonderful job. I'll be sending positive vibes to your dad in Arizona!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Positive thoughts for your dad! I love the floor, it looks fantastic, but it sounds like one of those projects that I would probably have fizzled out on right around the word "subfloor"! I'm glad Phillip was adopted by you guys, maybe another adoptive parent wouldn't have figured out what he really needed.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Kudos to the excellent job you did on your floor. I appreciate the hard work that it took to achieve that look. I don't sew (some day), but adore your blog, style, and sense of humor. And, love your shoes! Thank you for loving Phillip so much to want the best for him. You and your hubby rock! I also want to send up a prayer that your father's procedure will be successful and that he will be blessed with many healthy years to enjoy your current and future sucesses with you. Keep on creating . . . we love you!

  59. Nothing but love and good thoughts to you and your family from California!! It' s the least I can do for you considering all the hard work and love (it's obvious) you put into everything you do, for the benefit of others! Thank you!! XO's

  62. I am sending good health vibes to your father. I hope that his surgery is successful.
As for the dog, I can't believe how much your experiences matched mine. A lovely rescue organization contacted us (after we contacted them) to foster with intent to adopt a beautiful white husky that was unusually good around cats. It was OK for a bit, but he had terrible separation anxiety, stubbornness and mood swings (which is kind of scary for a 50 lbs. dog). But he also chased our kitties and bit me during a training session. The rescue told us that a family in upstate New York with a big yard, another big dog, and a 14 year old boy wanted to adopt him, so we brought him back. I cried the whole time, but it really was for the best. Like you and Jeff, my husband and I take our commitment to animals very seriously, so it was difficult decision. I'm glad you shared your experience, as I felt very alone and very much as if I was a failure at first.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I will be thinking of your Dad and wishing him the best, hope the surgery goes perfectly and he will be home and healed soon. You deserve the best of luck, dear Gertie.
As for Phillip, I think it is a beautiful and actually a very happy story. Many rescued dogs never get over their feeling of abandonment / mistreating and never trust a family again. Your dog had already fallen in love with a family again and found a home. It's sad that your feelings had to be involved before that family realized they couldn't part with Phillip. But think about this: there is a dog out there who hasn't found his family yet, and you could change its life!
I send you a big hug and positive thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  66. You both did the right thing, for yourselves and the dog. The right one will come along! Something you might consider is to keep doggie off your beautiful new floor. I have 50lb dogs and wooden floors, so now I'm seeing gouges and scratches. Plywood is quite soft. Healing thoughts for your dad.

  67. I'm sorry to hear about u having to return Phillip, and sorry about your dad, I hope he has a speedy recovery and is blessed with good health moving forward.

Your floors looks amazing, I can't believe you DIY'd!!! I love your cat's name, Henry, thats't the name I always wanted to name my cat, when I get one.

    xx

Side note, thank u for your awwesome tutorials, I've been using them lately to draft collars. They turned out wonderful.

I've blogged my two dresses with self drafted collars, this one is a LBD for work with peter pan collars and this one is a red dress with collars inspired by a RTW dress.

Let me know what you think and any suggestions are most welcome :)

  68. Oh, my!
That floor! it's wonderful! I really do not understand "stencil." How can you draw a pattern like that? Of course i live in Spain, when wood flors are practically non existent, so all these techiniques about sanding or wood filling are unkown to us, tile users. I guess you used a special paint to be walked on...Let us know how the floor behaves with use, ok?

    ReplyDelete
  69. There's a lot of hard duty there with your father and the puppy! I'm so sorry you are enduring all of this when all of time you should be reveling in your new home! Hope things start looking up soon and in the meantime I will be holding a good thought for you.

    ps: floor looks amazing!

  70. So many things happened in this post!

    dog
It took our dog about a year to get used to us and our routine. He still has his issues, but I'm thankful he's small and portable. Had he been a large dog and had the same issues, I'm not sure we would have kept him.

    your floor
What an amazing job! Is the floor sealed or will weathering add to the character of the design? Either way, it's super pretty.

    your dad
I wish your dad health, and all your family lots of good times together. I hope this new technology works!

    you
I'm sending positive thoughts your way. :)

  72. Best wishes to your dad.
Gorgeous floor; sorry about your dog-hopes; you know, if cats know they're top, erm, cat, and you introduce a dog into THEIR house, most will get along better than if they were introduced into a house that already belongs to a dog.
Now, the point of my comment: Are the skull stencils connected to the pink coffee table? That would be weird-cute in the right house.

  73. my thoughts go to your dad and your family. Sorry about your dog but I think you did well. Love the floor... you must be really patient

  81. I LOVE that dress! And the accessories ! Your blog has inspired me to start sewing again. I have made my daughter a vest, dress and getting ready to make her a culotte out of a pattern my mom used for me as a kid!
