Dude, We Bought a House.

Life changes are afoot! Jeff and I have been in the process of buying, um, a house. We closed on it yesterday, and then we bought a car for good measure! We're moving to Beacon, NY, as of next week. I'm a little overwhelmed right now and not really in the best blogging state of mind, so things may be a bit quiet here.

My plans for the next couple weeks consist of: 1) staying sane while packing up our little Queens apartment, 2) sewing curtains and pillows with the garment fabrics I have on hand, 3) purchasing the washer/dryer of my dreams, and 4) blogging as much (or as little) as I can.

Things are changing, but not too much. I'll still be here, and I'll still be teaching at The Sewing Studio in New York City. (Want to help a girl pay her mortgage? I still offer private lessons!) When I set up my new studio in the new house, I'll be back to sewing my usual stuff.

Readers, I'm so excited. Jeff and I have wanted this for a while. And it's happening! Thank for your support; it means the world to me to get your nice comments and emails every day.

P.S. The cats have no idea what's in store for them.

  13. Congratulations, hope your move goes smoothly and safely and that you soon have a lovely sewing space set up. (I agree with poppykettle - your house looks very cute and distinctively American to me too!)

  14. That's awesome. We bought our first house in 2006 and were so scared. The mortgage was huge and we were wondering how it would all work out. Well 6 years later that is the least of our worries. In time you make more money and your mortgage stays the same. It's a good thing. And it's fun decorating and renovating.

  15. Congratulations Gertie! You are an inspiration and you deserve the best in life. Anyone paying attention can see that good things happen to good people-who work their asses off!?! I can't wait to see what happens for you next. Thanks

  20. ooo, you are moving upstate (well, it's all relative; I'll still be more upstate than you will be and anyone up in Potsdam will be more upstate than any of us!) - you and the kitties will love it.

So exciting. AND you can plant a Victory Garden!

JUST KIDDING! It's great that you and Jeff have found a house. I look forward to reading more about it, and your home dec sewing adventures.

There's a fairly substantial fiber community mixed in with all the artists and glassblowers as well. Congrats and welcome to the neighborhood!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I am BEYOND excited for you that closing went well and you're on the move!! Can't wait to see the new sewing space--nothing like vicarious decoration and equipment arranging from a distance, am I right? GET THAT WASHER. You're going to need it, what with the new dog and all. Also: GET THE WASHER. Because it's awesome (and totally worth the price of the house). Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Congratulations! Beacon is such a cute town, and the Dia is amazing. Beacon is close to NYC, so it's convenient too. Have fun! I'm just a little bit jealous. :)

  102. Congratulations! It makes me ridiculously happy to see good things happening for you and Jeff.

The house is adorable and I can't wait to see how you deck it out. Maybe you'll inspire me to actually care about home dec sewing the way you've inspired me to start sewing clothing for myself again.

  106. That's wonderful news! Funny, we've done just the opposite: left the house and sold the car for an apartment in the city :) In fact, I saw you leaving the subway station a few weeks back! You were wearing your lovely turquoise coat, but I didn't notice until we were going in opposite directions and it just didn't seem like the right time to say hi. Anyway, good luck to you, Jeff and the kitties! I've been to Dia, that part of NY is so charming.

  118. Congrats! We are under contract for a house as of this past Sunday - but ours has yet to be built, so we don't move until this summer. I'm envious of your laundry room-to-be, because I'm still trying to convince my husband that our 12 year-old set needs to be replaced, but since we have to buy a new refrigerator (the house doesn't come with one) I'll have to wait. Can't wait to see how you decorate - make sure you post pics for us, please!

  133. Congrats, Gertie! Now you're in my neck of the woods (I'm in Pleasant Valley). Commuting to the city can be fun--hope you have lots of portable sewing projects or sewing books to read on the train. I did it for 8 years before settling once again in my childhood home of Dutchess County full time. Best of luck to you and Jeff (and the cats).

    ReplyDelete
  134. What an exciting milestone! There is nothing like having your own nest to feather. I know the area- I had relatives in Dutchess county nearby. Very pretty place! So happy for you!

  139. What a pretty house. That would be my dream home!
    Good luck with everything.

    ReplyDelete
  140. The new house looks roomy and cute. I know you will like it. I have an older Kenmore Elite front loader and dryer. No steam.. I love it anyway. I recently washed custom printed fabric from Spoonflower with Sun and Earth no phosphate cleaner on the delicate cycle and the results were great.
Regarding the kitties, I have read that one thing you can do is take them to the new house a couple of times before you move to give them a chance to get used to the house before you move.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Oooh, Congratulations! The house is adorable! I remember buying our first house and I loved every second of home ownership. Being able to make all of these decisions on your own was so fun! (OK, so maybe it's not all fun, but most of it was :) )

The picture of your cat made me laugh. It reminded me of moving with out cats. I used to find them hiding out in boxes or perched atop a giant, wobbling stack of them.

    ReplyDelete
  142. How lovely...wishing you well in this latest adventure in your life! Now Jeff will have all sorts of "Honey-Do" projects heading his way.
