Bombshell On the Town

I've never really blogged this dress before, and now seems the perfect opportunity! This is the dress we make in my online course Perfect Fit Bombshell Dresses. May I point out the faux-sarong skirt?

And the contrasting waist stay?

And perhaps you'd like to see the grosgrain zipper guard?

Okay, enough shilling my course. (But seriously! You can learn how to make all these details right here! For the low, low price of $29.99!)

Jeff and I went out on the town to celebrate his book release last night. Here's what my date wore:

OMG guys, my husband is so cute.

First we stopped at the Union Square Barnes & Noble to see Jeff's book on the shelf.

A saleslady yelled at us for taking pictures in the store. Seriously, that's not allowed? You'd think we were in Prada or something. But then she relented when we told her manager that Jeff wrote the book, and they asked him to sign copies!

I bought a copy. Did you know it's dedicated to me?

Awwww.

Then we went to dinner at Craft, which was AMAZING.

Whew, what a night!

  8. Gertie! I've been stuck at the same problem on the dress course for a few weeks now with no feedback. I know you are so so busy and I completely understand but when do you think you'll be able to answer questions on there again? Thanks!

Congrats to Jeff by the way. I love those types of books so I'm off to buy it. You look beautiful as well on your night out!

  20. Gertie, as Prince would say, you are hecka slammin' in that dress!!! And to know that the inside is so beautifully finished is extra special. I continue to await your book with bated breath.

Still, won't take the course--it's just not the dress for me. Hopefully you'll design another course for those of us "non-bombshell"/more Vintage Vogue 1084 gals!

  27. Jeff is talented, kind, and very cute. But you are absolutely, breathtakingly, beautiful. Not to mention one of the most all-around talented renaissance women in the blogoverse today.
    What a pair you make!

  29. I am enrolled in this class and am loving it! I am just about finished with the outer bodice (my next step is to sew in the twill tape along the upper cup) and it is looking so professional. I think I have said this before, but you are an awesome teacher!

I love the picture of you with your hubby's book : ) I read the first four chapters and am definitely going to buy it, I need to know what happens, great writing! And an endorsement from Suzanne Collins on the cover....WOW! I loved the Hunger Games!

  30. You look beautiful! Congrats to Jeff!

  31. You are quite the bombshell in that dress, if I may say so, one gal to another. And the construction details are exquisite. Too bad my bod's bombshell days are past -- I'll second the request for a class for those of us gals who want to make less of some of the curves we wish we didn't have?

And congratulations on Jeff's book! I read the first four chapters and can't wait 'til I can get to a brick 'n mortar store to find out what happens next!

  32. Love the dress, Gretchen! Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have my own version of the bombshell dress to post on my blog. Your Craftsy course has been an inspiration for me to get back into sewing!

And cheers to your hubs new book!

  43. I think it's really cool that your (individual) stars are lining up in such a way that you both have wonderful accomplishments to celebrate together and at the same time. And I've gotta tell you this just for grins. I took your online Bombshell dress course a few weeks back just for something fun to do (sorry, I am so not the Bombshell type) and I really enjoyed it and learned from it as well. The real kick is that last week, I got a two dress sewing job and for what? Yep, two Bombsell type dresses! Boning, underling, under structure et al. Nature is funny like that and I'm still smiling over that one! Best Regards to both of you!

  47. That sure looks like a great night on town, and you sure are a bombshell, looking so great and lovely! Congratulations on the book release! I'll make sure I pop into Barnes and Noble and buy the book when I'm in NY in November... (it wouldn't be the same buying it online after the B&N episode, haha!)

  48. Awww, you and your husband are too adorable! =) The dress looks gorgeous... I can only hope mine will turn out just as beautiful!

  49. I use Petersham ribbon for all kinds of applications, but I never before thought of making it into a zipper guard. Very clever, Gertie! I'm using that idea regularly from now on.
Congratulations on your family's latest success.

  52. Hi there,
I stumbled on your site while looking for beginner sewing patterns and tips, and I had to let you know that it's super fun! I've been inspired to give sewing a try as a creative hobby and as a break from my grad studies. Still, I'll take it slow to not get frustrated.:) This week I've gotten my sewing machine tuned up, but haven't yet put fabric to machine, as it were...

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the great blog (and the many links to explore) and great fodder for projects I hope to tackle in the future.

  60. Hi Gertie,

I'm about to order your course on this dress at craftsy.com. I'd like to sew it from velvet, some dark colour. Do you think it's a suitable material, or it's better to choose something lighter?

Thanks for your comments; I read each and every one! xo Gertie
