The Stitch-Along Begins!

It's here! The first day of my Stitch Magic Stitch-Along at the STC Craft blog. This week's topic is quilting, with exercises you can follow for making the sample squares above. And look back to Monday's post here for inspiration on incorporating these techniques into garments.

Next week I'm super excited to be tackling pintucks, since that's a detail that adorns so many beautiful vintage garments. I hope you'll join in!

  1. Folded or double needle? Folded tucks, the best thing you can do is transfer pattern markings. Double needle, well, a pintucking foot is great!

  2. The quilting squares look great - I'll be "tuning in" as soon as I get home from work today!

This is my first sew-along and I'm looking forward to participating. Thanks, Gertie!

  3. I've been quilting for many years so won't be doing these samples but I think I will make the tied quilting sample as it's one style I haven't tried. Looking forward to the next installation.

  4. I've done a fair number of samples in the past in classes, hand and machine quilting, smocking, tucks, embroidery. I own Colette Wolff's excellent "The Art of Manipulating Fabric."

What I'd like to see is how the techniques are incorporated into a garment. For example, I assume that with quilting, one quilts the material and then superimposes the sewing and cutting lines of a garment that has been fitted in muslin form.
