Au Revoir! (Or not.)

Oh, readers. This was supposed to be my "Au revoir, I'm headed to glorious Palm Springs!" post. Alas, I am not. There are gobs of snow falling onto New York right now and my flight was canceled. I'm rescheduled to head out Friday morning. I suppose we'll see. In any case, I'm still taking my planned-on vacation day today and staying home and sewing my little heart out. Things could definitely be worse.

In case you missed my post where I mentioned the Palm Springs trip, I'm going to be guest-teaching at Heather Ross's weekend sewing workshop at the fabulous Ace Hotel. (Come on, weather! Cooperate!) With any luck, I'll be lounging poolside by Friday afternoon.

While I try to maintain a tightly-run ship around here, things will be a little more loosey-goosey until I'm back next Wednesday. However, I am planning on blogging a bit from the workshop, so don't be a stranger! I'm packing my camera and hope to capture lots of Palm Springs sewing magic for you.

More to come!

  1. Bah humbug on the snow! :p Here's hoping that the weather will cooperate enough so you can make your flight on Friday. I can't wait to hear about the sewing workshop--how exciting for you!!!! :) (Not to mention I'm sure you'd like a change of weather from the snowy northeast. ;)

  2. When you get to Palm Springs (and you will!) you might like to check out Gorilla Burger. I didn't go when I was there, but I hear it's mighty tasty. Lounging poolside sounds mighty nice right now!

  5. Tangenially: Vintage travel posters are one of those things that just makes me curl up and roll on the floor in sheer delight. The design, the colors . . . so awesome it hurts.

  6. Oh, Gertie, I hope you make it out! But watch out using titles like "Au Revoir" -- I saw it and nearly passed out, thinking you were announcing something horrible like the end of your blog!

  7. I hope you get out soon. I was in PS a few weeks ago and it's a lovely town. Try to get someone to take you on a tour of all the fabulous mid-century homes there. Also, although I know that cold probably doesn't have much appeal right now, try to go up the tramway. The views are spectacular! Happy travels.

  8. I was just there recently. There's a beautiful Richard Avedon photography exhibit that closes on Jan. 31... If you can squeeze it in, do it! It's beautiful.

  9. I hope you escape Snowpocalypse! It's pretty, but irritating, I'm sure.

Enjoy the heck out of the trip! I'm jealous you get to take a class with "The" Heather Ross. She's got such great style.

  12. Bummer on your canceled flight but hopefully you can still get a few days of sunshine!

Will you be teaching any 1 or 2 day work shops on sewing here in the city?

  13. THanks Gertie - I was wondering whether I'd missed something on the facings.

What about finsihing the facing edges though? To bind or not to bind - I am in a binding quandary.

  15. So sad about the weather, but I'm sure once you get to Palm Springs all the hassle will be worth it. :) Best of luck, can't wait to hear about your experience!

  16. Hey! I just got back from Palm Springs on Monday. The weather has been in the 70's. Say hi to the desert coyotes from me.

  17. Oh No! You sound so stoic and mature. (I would be cursing the snow gods with great vigor.) Best of travel luck for Friday - hope you get to sunny vacationland soon. :)

  18. Hi Gertie, just found your blog today and I LOVE it. Happy travels to Palm Springs. I can't wait to hear about your workshop.
I love your step by step pictures and techniques, I am planning on doing the same thing for my website. I am planning on teaching sewing from the very beginning for those who want to learn how to sew.

  19. As a Texan, I'm normally so jealous of snow stories, but not in this case. Fingers crossed that the weather lets up enough for you to get to Palm Springs today! And, once you're there, have a wonderful time. Palm Springs sounds like paradise compared to the crazy weather everywhere else!

from far away Australia, I'm wondering if the above issue about race and representation in Heather Ross is 'live'- your post on the gun fabric was interesting to someone outside the US - these broader social questions provoke thought while sewing ...

  23. @Susan - I read that entire Ahsley blog post and every comment. It was the biggest "much ado about nothing but misdirected political correctness" I have ever read. Ashley set up a completely unfair straw man argument, lured Heather in replying with an innocent, from-the-heart answer, and then proceeded to make nonsensical connections between Heather's reply, her artwork and racism (using elitist academic concepts of "privilege", and doing so with a narrow view on racial privilege only). Ashley even later pops in midway down in the comment and suggests it was wrong to discuss Heather's artwork or the fabric industry from a "brownwashing" perspective. Ahsley also says asking Heather to draw "the black experience" is completely unfair. Yet, Ashely and her supporters's condescension are entirely based on those two things. They then attacked Mari who stated a fair response in the comments and on her blog.

If you read towards the end of the comments, read Susie McDonough's and Elizabeth's reply. Ashley didn't respond to those (but did others) because they nailed it on the head.

Personally, I think the best response to that whole thread was really this one:

    -- Begin Quote --
When Paul McCartney was asked about the people who say “The White Album” should have been done differently he responded, “some say it should have been two albums, some say we should have taken out some songs and made one album. I say we made it, it sold, it’s the bloody White Album, shut up already.”

Heather made the fabric, folks are going to buy it or not. Get off your high horses, get rid of your white guilt, and get back to your crafting!
    -- End Quote --
