Plan D Seems to Be a Good Plan.

Hey, remember that black tie event I have coming up? Yeah. Neither Plan A, nor Plan B, are working for my evening dress. (The vintage Pauline Trigere pattern was a disaster in muslin form, if you're curious.) I came up with a Plan C, but it was quickly dismissed due to lack of readily available supplies. So, for Plan D, I've concocted a little sewing equation for you.

First, you take Vogue 1176, a lovely retro Michael Kors pattern.

Then you combine it with the long, lean, strapless silhouette of Vogue 2481. (Throw in the satin stole as well, please.)
Take some duchess satin in a lovely deep ruby color.
And complete the recipe with a dash of Marilyn. (Mostly for the moxie and matching belt. No gloves, please.)
Do you see where I'm headed with this, readers? I've made a muslin of this new "Franken-pattern" and let me tell you, it's good. So now I have roughly 11 days to make this dress, complete with boning and underlining and the whole deal. But I'm feeling positive.

(And don't worry, the sew-along is still happening. When the going gets tough, the tough get sewing!)

  3. HA! 11 days is NOTHING. if you said 3 days, then i'd be a bit worried (but just a small bit!).... you got this in the bag....

can't wait to see the finished product!!! happy new year!

  8. The raspberry is undoubtedly luscious and I do love the idea of that Kors pattern elongated. Which glasses will you wear with it? And a berry lip I imagine too, how fun! I think you're going to look like Angelina Jolie would if she wore color and had a sense of humor!

  9. A happy new year!!!!!!

I'm still musslining on my crepe-dress and you knock up dress after dress.....I'm sorta jealous. (I spent nearly 5 h today for a thorough cleanout of the boys room instead of sewing. And wasn't THAT necessary.)

  10. Nice fabric! I think the dress is going to look great. Are you going to show the muslin, or will you surprise us when you have the end result?

  12. Gertie, you will love, love, love V2481! I have sewn this dress so many times, and I love it every time. I think I have it in five colors, both long and short! If you're going to make the long one, you must use wide silks, the 45" ones won't work. I can't wait to see how yours turns out!

  13. Moxie is the word of the day! Seriously, I keep saying it for some reason.

LAP, I think my usual black glasses. Angelina with a sense of humor, I love it!

Tilia, I think I'll keep the muslin to myself. I want to surprise you all with the finished product!

Susan, I'm doing a stole in lieu of gloves. I personally think both is overkill.

Angela, I couldn't get V2481 in time, so I'm just using it as inspiration! I do have a copy on order now, so I hope to make it in the future.

  14. Wow! Glamorous. When I was in elementary school there was an older girl at my church who made her own clothes and I was told she combined different patterns to make her own looks. That's when I decided I wanted to learn how to sew. :) Go Frankengown!

  15. Plan D sounds just about right! The bow on the Michael Kors dress is so pretty and the long length adds drama. Good luck and happy sewing! Oh and Happy New Year too!! :)

  16. I made that Michael Kors dress for my Christmas party. It is awesome. I didn't make a muslin for it and I was sorry I didn't. The pattern runs very large. Good thing I had some extra fabric!
Can't wait to see your sure to be lovely garment!

  17. You will knock the socks off of everybody in the room! I think the gloves would be the icing on the cake... maybe a mink stole (faux - of course!) I can't wait to see the posted pics when its' done.

  19. This is going to look so great on you! It sucks when a pattern just doesn't work for you like Plan A, but I'm so excited to see what you do with the new pattern!

  22. Kors pattern is wonderful. I like all the designs which you have and just wanted to tell you that self confidence is the key to success. I am very eager to see all the designs.

  23. Oh I love that fabric!

I have a Q for you, though. I have never made muslin mock ups of my garments before, and I can see it would have saved me some headaches... but what do you do with a muslin fitting dress? Do you just have a bunch of muslin pieces hanging in a closet? (BTW I can see the possibilities of taking those musies and creating a whole new custom fitted piece)

  24. It's gonna look fierce! And I love the fabric you chose.

  25. Ooh I've eyed up this Kors pattern but hadn't considered elongating it - can't wait to see the finished item, even though I know it's going to be stunning!

(lol at Anita - I had to Google 'moxie' too!)

  26. When I hear "moxie" I think of Night at the Museum2 with Amy Adams as Amelia Erhardt.

Can't wait to see the finished gown!

  29. Oh this dress sounds like it will be fabulous!
Vogue 2481 was the first dress I decided to make for myself (with the help of my mom) for a ball in college. I just couldn't find what I was looking for so we made it instead!

We made it in 3 days over easter break so you will have no problem in 11 days!

Also - thanks so much for all your work on this blog! I found it in september/october when I was looking for ideas on making a snow white costume! The costume turned out great and has a fabulous horsehair hem that I learned how to do reading back posts here!

Here's a pic of me in the Snow White costume: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=7266735&l=56a02277dc&id=697258342

  30. This is a pattern question: Does Vogue Pattern V2481 have a waistline seam? I'm curious about how they made the pattern. :)
