The Yellow Dress (in Nashville!)

Well, the dress is finished and has had its inaugural wearing! I sewed the last stitch just before our museum meet-up at the Frist to see the Golden Age of Couture exhibit.

Jeff took pictures of me in the lobby of The Hermitage Hotel, where we stayed. It was ridiculously beautiful and grand, and provided quite the backdrop!

I posed, rather queen-like, in one of the fancy armchairs.

Then two of the exceedingly nice hotel workers insisted on moving the chair in front of the fireplace so we could get the perfect shot. A far cry from the usual shots in my apartment, isn't it?
Then we headed over to the museum.

And met up with the group—a fabulous mix of fellow bloggers (including Amy and Jenny) and fashion enthusiasts.

The Frist arranged a guided tour for us! Our docent was the wonderful Mancil, who was incredibly knowlegeable, funny, and photogenic.
Super big thanks to Ellen and Mancil at the Frist! They gave us quite the warm reception. The exhibit was absolutely breath-taking, and I will definitely be writing more about it in a upcoming post.

P.S. I know I dropped off on construction posts on the yellow dress. I'll do one more to wrap it up, including how to install a waist stay!

  1. Wow, Gertie! That dress is simply stunning. The sheen of the fabric, the lay, and the draping (of course!) You've outdone yourself - it's just fantastic.

  17. That halter neckline is seriously flattering for you! And the dress is totally scrumptious! I can't wait to find out how you finished the skirt since it looks so luscious and full! Does it have a built in underskirt, or did you use the layer-cake crinoline..As you can see, I'm impatient for answers. Forgive me!

  30. Great work! I love the slight sheen - and that armchair in front of the fireplace... awesome!
I was lucky enough to see that exhibition when it visited regional Victoria (Bendigo) early last year... loved it and wondered whether it had been packed up back to the V&A or gone on tour... glad to see it is out and about, spreading joy (and envy!) :0)

  33. Fab dress!
Perfect for viewing the exhibit (you will share more later, right?)

  34. I LOVE the photo of you in front of the fireplace! So perfect. I hope you write more about your trip in my hometown! I saw the exhibit recently with my best sewing friend and we spent hours oogling hems and admiring necklines.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the Frist and the Hermitage were lucky in that they were not seriously damaged by the flooding this spring. Landmarks a few blocks from where you stayed sustained serious damage, and homes all over town were destroyed. It wasn't well-reported nationally, and the downtown tourist area was quickly restored, but many parts of town still bear the scar of May's flooding.

I hope this doesn't sound saccharine, but Nashville is a wonderful place full of some of the best people around, and I am glad you had a chance to visit!

  41. ahhhhh! Your dress couldn't be more wonderful or show off your tats more beautifully! Awesome.

I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the Golden Age exhibit... I was able to see it at the V&A in 2007, and remember my heart was fluttering the entire time! I'd been insanely anxious to see some Theatre de la Mode. It did NOT disappoint.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh that is just beautiful. I wasn't too keen on the yellow but it suits that dress perfectly!

Great job!! I'm more than impressed.

PS. Guys, I'm having a giveaway on my blog next week

  44. So beautiful Gertie - and totally appropriate that you wore your own couture piece to the exhibition!

I saw the exhibition at the V & A in London - couldn't believe that Dior's New Look was right in front of me.

  51. Wooh! The dress is luminescent and absolutely fabulous! And so beautifully made, of course. The only thing lacking for your virtual audience is the sense of touch - it looks so beautifully tactile too, you just want to feel the layers of fabric! Can't wait for the updates on the design - as well as your impressions on the exhibition!

  52. And speaking of couture exhibitions, for any of you Dior fans either living in or visiting France, do get yourself to the Dior Museum in Granville (Normandy) one summer. It holds a different exhibition every year of Dior dresses. This year had a Carnaval theme (with the balance weighing rather too heavily towards Galliano and not enough Dior for my liking, even if the Galliano dresses were well worth the look anyway!). The exhibition for the centenary of his birth a few years ago was breathtaking.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I said Carnaval, when in fact I meant balls and dressing up... Anyway, well worth the yearly visit!

  54. Oh wow, Gertie! This dress looks amazing--it fits you like a dream! I just love how the bust pleating turned out--and the color is so lovely on you (making me envious that you can wear yellow! haha!). I must tell you: each project you make is even better than the last, and have really helped me get out of my sewing slump this summer seeing your progress and newest achievements. Bravo on another well-done garment!!! (Can't wait to see some of the nitty-gritty detail shots about the construction... ;)

I am inspired, since I can really tell that you didn't take any shortcuts (which I am so prone to do!). I got my Lady Grey pattern in the mail, and despite feeling a little daunted when I read through it, I took a deep breath and repeated, "Gertie will help me... Gertie will help me..."
