Museum Meet-Ups: Nashville and New York

That's right, I'm taking my show on the road! I'm quite lucky to have a husband who caters to my every silly whim. When I found out that the Golden Age of Couture exhibit is in Nashville for the summer (with only this one U.S. stop!), I expected to have to make a detailed argument for why we should take a trip there to see it. But I barely got one sentence out before Jeff said, "Sure, let's go." Sweet! So we're going to spend a few days in Nashville at the very end of August. I hear will be boiling hot, but one must suffer for couture sometimes.

I'll be going to see the exhibit (which I've heard about for years it seems, but I never thought I would get to see!) on Sunday, August 29th at 1:00 p.m. Would you like to join us? I would love to meet you! I'm starting up an e-mail list for interested parties. Just drop me a line at gertie [at] blogforbettersewing [dot] com.

Now, closer to home! How about a meet-up at FIT later this month? The current exhibit is Eco-Fashion: Going Green. It's not the most thrilling topic to me, I admit, but it's an important one and I always enjoy the FIT exhibits. Plus: it's free. I'm thinking Saturday, July 24th. Afterwards, we can do lunch and/or fabric shopping! Again, just e-mail me to get involved: gertie [at] blogforbettersewing [dot] com.

Yay for meet-ups! Hope you can make one of these. If not, don't worry. I'm sure there will be more exhibits in my future - especially with Jeff so easy to convince. I'm thinking I'll push for London next!

  1. I was lucky enough to catch this exhibition in Australia last year, it only had one stop here too-a small town of all places. It was absolutely breathtaking, you will love it!

  2. I saw that exhibit in early June, and unless they've changed it, I think you'll really like it. It had clothing from the late 1800's up through today, and to me the "green" part almost seemed an afterthought. The clothes were really great! My favorite was the very last dress.

  8. Yes, come to London! Then you can see the V&A exhibitions first!

This exhibition is fantastic, you're going to have such a great time. I went with my mum and her friend, who were doing a very loud running commentary as we went round, reminiscing on what their mothers' wore, the impact of the different designers etc. By about five minutes in, we had some hangers on who'd asked if they could join our little group!

  16. The Golden Age of Couture is amazing - I saw it here in Australia. You'll all love it! Also, save up for the exhibition guide/book thing: expensive, but gorgeous.

  17. I'm just back from Nashville and I had to write in and say it's the finest clothing exhibition I've ever seen. They have the iconic New Look Bar outfit. You know, the pale fitted jacket and cloud of black skirt. They have day suits and evening clothes, shoes, hats, undergarments, lots of short films from British Pathe showing contemporary fashion shows, how to wear your New Look corset and pads...Amazing. Plus, if you stop off and have a drink at the Hermitage Hotel (great historic hotel), have your husband make sure the men's room is empty and check it out. It's a Deco dream in green and black.

  20. I live in Nashville and was lucky enough to get a private tour, while Susan Khalje was in town teaching her couture class. Exhibit was wonderful, and taking Susan's class the week of the opening made it even more special. If you need advise on dining, etc. let me know. Nashville is a great and friendly city. I also highly recommend Susan's couture class, it may seem expensive but it is not when you consider that she spends 6 full 9 hour days working closely with you. She completely changed my sewing perspective!

  24. Now I have to whine because that's the weekend before Dragon*Con and there's NO WAY I'll be able to meet up with everyone. I'll be scrambling to finish my sewing for the convention! BOO HOO! *sniffles*

Maybe another time up in NYC?

  25. Yes please come to London! Not that I live anywhere near London, but at least it's the same continent!

  26. Oh I saw it in Australia too, but I'd warn you to go during the week if the crowds here on a Saturday are any indication of what it might be like once it makes it to a big city! I loved the videos the best - salon shows of couture, so elegant and beautiful!

  33. This exhibit delivers; it is well worth the trouble to see it. Over 200 items, approx. 150 of them are garments. It took me 3 hours to browse it all. (tip: wear good shoes for standing on concrete) Some garments are encased in glass, but most are out for us to look at, but not touch.
