Rag Curls, Day Two (and a Note on Blouse Bows)

Guys, my set lasted another day! I didn't even do anything special, just slept on it. With a cat on my head all night, no less. I think this extra holding power was due to a couple factors: starting my set on dry, slightly dirty hair (one day unwashed), and really dousing it with LottaBody. Also, I left my curlers in longer than usual since I took yesterday off and didn't do myself up until about noon.

Yes, my hair is technically quite dirty today. But my hair is dry and coarse, so I don't get a lot of greasiness. If my bangs get oily, I just spray a little dry shampoo on them and it's all good. (Here's the brand I use; you can buy it at most Duane Reades here in New York.)

It wasn't as curly as yesterday, so I did a bit more styling. I did three victory rolls, and it's done. Nice!

Also, I've had some e-mail questions on how I get my blouse bows to look like they do. The secret is in this pattern (it's a project from Vogue's New Book for Better Sewing; read more about it here). It has a simple band collar, with about an inch left open in the middle. The bow is a simple strip, which is a separate piece that gets threaded through the open slot when you wear it. This results in a nice, crisp bow.

That's all for today! I'm going on a special birthday outing this afternoon. (I'm turning 31 tomorrow!) Shopping in the Garment District, followed by the Museum at FIT, and an Italian dinner out. Have a lovely day, friends!

  2. I second the birthday wishes. Also being an Aries, my BD was on 3/27; I turned 61! I can't believe it.

My hair is fine and thin but takes a curl very well. Back in the day, I could sit on it. I used to roll it up on Kleenex! When I unrolled it, I flipped it all upside down and went thru it gently with a wire brush. I had gorgeous curls for 2 days!

    Best, Gail D.

  3. Happy Birthday! I don't think your hair is dirty at all. Women used to wash their hair once a week and complain that they couldn't do anything with it when it was "clean."

  16. Love your rag curls, used to do those in high school...should try to get my girls to do them, since their hair doesn't hold curls well and these always lasted!
    Happy Birthday!

  22. Happy Birthday, Gertie! (A bit late--but I hope it still counts? ;)

Isn't it amazing how long a curl set can hold? I've been itching to actually try taking care of mine (instead of just tumbling into bed and not caring whether they get smushed overnight or not! ;), by pinning them up again at night. Shall have to try next time and see how long I can make 'em last...

  23. Just a little note about dry shampoo-Tressemme has created a line of dry shampoos which come in larger bottles and is a bit cheaper (than what I can find in other brands). I have tried the waterless foam and it works great!
