Emma Pillsbury, Fashion Icon

Move over, Joan Holloway. I hate to say it, but I've got a new TV fashion icon. Jeff and I have been watching the first season of Glee on DVD which, let me tell you, is a ridiculous show. Ridiculously awesome. (There's singing and dancing and cute clothes, which means it meets my basic criteria for awesomeness.)

Emma Pillsbury, played by the adorable Jayma Mays, is a teacher with a sublime sense of style. Her wardrobe is very quirky Anthro meets colorful J. Crew, all perfectly accessorized with vintage jewelry. Every time her character comes on stage, Jeff is subjected to a barrage of "Omigod, look at her blouse!" or "Omigod, she's wearing a sweater guard!" or "I need an orange pencil skirt!" Sometimes it just devolves into frenzied whimpers of "skirt! blouse! brooch!" Her clothes are so amazing I can hardly take it.

And it seems I'm far from the only one to feel this way. Exhibit A: This is what Google automatically brought up as search suggestions when I typed in Emma Pillsbury.

I also came to find out that there are Polyvore sets and entire blogs devoted to her style. (A word of advice: be careful about perusing the blogs if you haven't seen the entire first season and you don't want to spoil some major plot points for yourself!)

Not the best pic, but this is the orange pencil skirt that did me in. The BOW! Look at the BOW! I will be making it my personal mission to knock that off.

She has the best blouses.

The woman can do vintage accessories like nobody's business. Sweater guards! You know how I love sweater guards.

Oh, and the hair! Good God, the hair.

Are you with me here, readers? Are you as obsessed with Emma Pillsbury's wardrobe as I am?

  1. Her character wardrobe is fun and quirky. This is how I want to dress when I hit my late 30's, at the minute still in love with alternative clothes and vintage.

  2. It's so validating to know that I'm not the only one with a girl crush on Emma Pilsbury, as in I want to have her exact wardrobe!

  3. Yes! Please make me an entire Emma-inspired wardrobe! ;) (And thanks for reading my blog!)

  4. Yes! I love her! If I become a teacher, that's how I'll dress for sure!

I adore Glee, the UK has just jumped on the bandwagon (I saw all of them as they came out in the U.S though, hurrah) so all my friends are doing the whole 'OH MAN YOU WERE SO RIGHT ABOUT THIS GLEE THING' - Glee is so much fun!

  5. Ohmigosh--that skirt!!!! *faints* If I could reach through my screen and steal it, I would. haha! You should definitely knock it off! :D You know why I like her style (from what I've seen of it) better than Joan's? It's slightly more whimsical and artsy--more to what I like to wear on a day-to-day basis!

Shall have to go peruse the blog about her style... I haven't watched Glee yet (admittedly, I'm not much into the song and dance thing. I'm a looser, I know... :p), but this just might make me. haha!

  7. I haven't seen this show, so to me Joan is still my fashion icon... Nevertheless, I'll give Emma and the show a go (always looking for new series to watch whilst waiting for MadMen season 4), and I do take you at your word and believe this is good stuff! Quirky is always a good thing!

  8. I didn't even know this show existed, I'm guessing it hasn't reached Sweden yet. I'll keep an eye open for it when it comes.

  9. Oh yes I love her quirky style.
That orange skirt is adorable, I have a tweedy brown one similar. Anything with a bow is a winner!
I really want to look at the dedicated blogs but being from the uk we're only a few episodes into season one so I don't want to spoil any plot treats hehe.
Looking forward to seeing what you create.

  12. Still haven't seen a single episode of "Glee," but must now make it my MISSION.

  13. I LOVE Emma (and not just because we share the same name!) Her fantasy wedding dress just screamed Audrey Hepburn.

Oh, and PS - I laughed out loud when I visited your blog this morning and saw that picture starting back at me. Her expression is priceless!

  15. Haven't seen the show but yes, that wardrobe is AWESOME! Also love the consistent hands-out gesture and shocked face...

  16. Hahahah, so glad it's not just me!

I covet every brooch she has ever worn.

  17. Emma's overall look is too prim for me (but just right for the character). But man, I covet a lot of the stuff she wears -- especially the vintage accessories.

[Good to know I'm not alone? Or bad, ha?]

Love the way they put her in such bold and inspiring color combinations, though. Nice hint of the inner, non-prim Emma....

Enjoy catching up with her adventures!

  18. The clothes on this show are AMAZING! I love getting to see what Miss Pillsbury will be wearing each week. OH! And the dresses that Quinn wears! AHHH! I love it, and I love this show. I was out shopping on Friday and the soundtrack was on in the store and I was loudly singing along. I think I'll listen to the soundtrack now actually!

  20. Yes! I love her! Thanks for sharing the blog dedicated to her wardrobe. I feel like I could actually pull some of those looks off. It would definitely help me to break out of my grey & black only slump.

  21. Ummm...I had no idea this person existed. Perfection in womanhood. Her clothing and color coordination are superb. I love the entire ensemble. Will be following her more and more. Thanks for heads-up.

  22. Why, pray, tell have I not seen this show yet?! I have lots of hand sewing to do on a quilt, so I think I shall have to catch myself up. Have you watched Pushing Daisies? Chuck's wardrobe is also rather awe-inspiring. If you're looking for vintage eye candy, that's the show.

  23. Now I officially am obsessed, I'm going to go through the photos on the Web, so if you don't mind I'll excuse myself from your lovely blog. *^v^*

  24. I love her - and the show. I even dressed as her for Halloween this year. That orange skirt is adorable, and looks like one I saw at Anthropologie... don't know if it's the same one though. It would be easy to make one!

  25. OH yes i love her wardrobe! fabulous :) xx

  26. Her eyes are a bit wide... Perhaps she has a thyroid problem?

  28. I may have to start watching Glee just because of this post! After I finish Heroes that is...which Emma Pilsbury briefly appeared in. I may also need to start wearing my sweater guard, and I NEED that orange pencil skirt! So much to take in! Gertie, why, oh why did you do this to me!

  29. What kills me about Emma is that I had her hair in 1982, only blonde... I do love her retro sensibilities, and Glee is a very silly show.

That orange skirt is to die for.

  30. Well, I am now! I've never even heard of this show but I'll be watching from now on. Gertie, you've done it again!

  32. I love her, too! (And the show!) Seriously, I love her outfits. I can't wait to see what you make! :)

  33. I know exactly what you mean. In one episode, I remember being completely enamored of her owl sweater guards. Owls! I then scoured ebay looking for similar ones, but came up empty. Thanks for reminding me!

  34. I love her too, and I've made several comments about how much I want her blouses but some of it is just a little "prim" for me I think. My TV style icon will, for the forseeable future, remain Chuck from Pushing Daisies. I loved that show and am so sad it's gone.

  35. Sorry, can't stand the show, but I DO agree that her character has great clothes and accessories. I am addicted to sweater clips myself and have a collection of almost 20. I don't know how I ever lived without them...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really can't get into the show, although my husband loves it haha! But yes, I adore her clothes!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think she looks a whole hell of a lot like the model from the colette patterns website!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Looks like the stuff I wore in the late 50's, early 60's. I still have some jewerly that looks like what is on the page! Yikes!

  39. I started watching the series and I too fell in love with her wardrobe! She's so awesome, with all the colors and her vintage style! I love her! Great post!

  40. I love Emma! Especially when she colour-blocks an entire outfit, it makes it bright and fun when it could have been just prim. Love that show :)

  43. Adorable show with adorable fashion!

  44. I dug out two sweater guards that I saved from my Grandma when I saw the episode where Emma wore one! (I didn't know that's what they were called - thank you.) I've wanted to wear them, but never had the nerve. Now I will! And I agree, Emma does help soften the blow of losing our friends on Pushing Daisies.

  45. Awww I've just turned off the TV from watching an episode of Glee, and I LOVE Emma's character's style. I have a similar bow top but I may have to go down the whole vintage-jewellery & sweater guards look! :D

  46. I'm happy I'm not the only one who loves her. I live in London, and we only just got Glee on our TV's this year. When I saw the first episode, and Emma's clothes, I rushed to the internet, and watched the whole 1st season in one night night. I so so so want to dress like her now, and I have been going thru ebay to find patterns that will help achieve this goal.

By the way I think your blog is phenomenal.

  47. I haven't watched this show before, but I absolutely love her style! It's so adorable and quirky. I might have to add this to my Netflix queue.
