Thanks, Vogue!

Ladies, the sewing blogosphere is atwitter! And for good reason: the new Vogue patterns were just released. Remember this post, where I bitched and moaned that Vogue should hire cooler designers like Nanette Lepore and Rebecca Taylor? Well, half of my fantasy has come true! Rebecca Taylor is the newest addition to their designer line. (Do you think this means that I'm psychic and that next season we'll be treated to some patterns from Nanette Lepore? Oh, I hope so!)

There are two new patterns from Ms. Taylor: the fab skirt suit above and this flowy little dress.

The suit is going to be a must-buy for me. I love the retro silhouette and interesting details, like the cool lapels, flower brooch, and couture details. Part of the embellishment comes from hand pickstitches! I'm having fun imagining different color schemes for this suit. The neutral gray and black is a nice classic choice, but it's a little corporate for me.

The dress is a pass. It's fine, just not a must-have for my stash.

The other new Vogue I'm loving is 8640. Check out the lines on this skirt. SO vintage!

Sadly, there's only one new Vintage Vogue, and it's a collection of aprons. Sigh.

So, what do you think? Any new favorites?

  1. It's not Vogue--but McCalls has a Nanette Lepore knockoff. Erica B. had a post on it. Here's the link on it if you're interested (it's a cute suit jacket): http://bit.ly/1sb666

    And aprons?!? Blerg.

  2. Most of the Vogues this time were great, but probably not wearable for many of us, either too dressy or need to be slim and tall. But beautiful designs this time... I didn't even catch the aprons, they weren't in the magazine. They look like most other reissues from the other companies.

  3. Lovin' that suit AND the dress...but I can't buy any more patterns until I make up some of the ones I have waiting for me!

  4. I love that Vogue has Rachel Comey patterns this season. SO awesome. I'm planning to make the tie front blouse.

The Tracy Reese chartreuse dress is amazing as well. Just don't know where I'd wear it for all that work... I mean, do you really think it is an "average" skill pattern? Doesn't look like it!

  5. I don't know if there is a Joann fabrics in your area. But if there is, then I wanted to let everyone know about the Vogue pattern sale: January 28-30 all Vogue patterns in stock are $3.99.

  6. The one that stands out for me is 8637...and not for a good reason. Are they yoga pants? A confused skirt? Or...dare I say it...MC Hammer pants???

  7. Emma I had the same reaction - it looks like a Depends gone horribly, horribly wrong...

  8. I love the dress and I'm happy that it goes up to a 22. I like the suits but I have no use for one.

I love the skirt to 1170.

    8638... What the?

  10. Wow! That first pattern is gorgeous!

  11. I must confess the only thing I'd be tempted to create is the skirt from 1169 - the Rebecca Taylor one that you featured first. I just love kicky back pleats!

  12. I love the suit, and the blouse in 1170... but I'm a SAHM, so have no reason to buy/make/have either one... sad. those weird depends pants look like something made by Ping on this season's Project Runway.... "interesting" and "comfortable"
    yikes.

  13. Not very much outstanding new patterns and presenting a vintage Vogue apron is just mocking us! My favourite is the 1170 skirt. Always looking for pencil skirt variations! The Rebecca Taylor suit will look great on you Gertie, and it will be nice to see it on a more feminine body (I don't think the model wear it especially well).

  14. Oh yes I like the high-waisted skirt very much! And a cape is just perfect as well. Aprons I can definitely pass on...

  15. That suit!
Makes me want to be part of the corporate world right now!

  16. I was underwhelmed by the new selection - I was hoping for some more relaxed dresses and little tops - Vogue only seem to do jersey or blousey. Having said that 1152, 8633 (look at the line drawings!) and the top in 1170 have potential, for my wardrobe at any rate. If I wore suits, 1169 would be on my list. Pity about the aprons and the Hammer-time pants! (thanks Emma - I now have a theme tune for today!)

  17. I always find that alot of the vogue collection is a bit old for my way of life but the suit is a must even thou i wouldnt get to wear very oftern.....(like that matters i want it!) i also like the blouse/top v1170 and the red dress v1162 if you changed the neck to a sweetheart neck i think that could work nicley. Thanks gertie x x

  18. I really like that new suit pattern from Rebecca Taylor; the neckline shaping and seaming on the skirt is divine! Although, I can't see myself buying/making it (as beautiful as it looks), 'cause I really have no need for a suit in my wardrobe right now. ;)

Otherwise, I'm just kind of "blah" about the rest of the patterns (and just a measly apron pattern for the Vintage Vogue line?! Oh, come on, people!). I really am not in love with many of the silhouettes/style they've presented; some just look like rehashes of older patterns (or maybe it's just me ;). I really haven't been head over heels in love with many Vogue patterns in years; I think the last time I bought one was a good three years ago!

  19. I too love the suit pattern. There's a sale on Vogues at my local fabric store soon and I'll be sure to scoop it up! (along with a few others I keep on a list of "Vogue patterns I want")

One note about suits to everyone who says they have no need for one:

You don't always have to wear it as a suit! The jacket would be a great spring jacket with other skirts, pants, jeans. And the skirt would be great to wear out to dinner with a pretty top/blouse, or just when you want to feel a little extra feminine. Wear it with flats and it's much more casual too.

Also, neither of the pieces NEEDS to be made of suiting material. This is why we sew - so we're not pidgeonholed by the constraints of what's on store racks!

If you think it's a lovely pattern that you'd enjoy making and seeing on yourself, then go for it! You can make it in such a way that it fits your lifestyle!

  20. I'm getting that grey suit pattern! And crossing my fingers for Nanette Lepore as well. She's one of my favorite designers. I like the b/w polka dot dress too. And the Jacket/skirt combo you featured. I see it in a creamy pink for me. Or red.

  21. I am loving 8640, the aprons and 8633! Totally loving it! I am looking forward to buying some new patterns in the near future! Thanks for lettingus no!

  22. I like that dress, but I'd have to make it in a solid color to avoid looking Church Lady-ish.

  23. YAY to the new Rebecca Taylor suit, and thanks for the heads up!

  24. I love the suit pattern, but I'm with you Gertie.. Pass on that dress. By the way, am I the only one who thinks that model looks severely under-nourished? Maybe I just spend a lot of time looking and sexy sewing girls modeling their own clothes, but to me she looks like a little girl playing dress up with mommy's suit. Someone get that model a small bust alteration or a milkshake.. You'd think Vogue would make sure the clothes actually fit their models...

Oh well. At least its an awesome pattern for once. It will look awesomer on me for sure.

  25. LOVE that skirt suit. It's so hard to find interesting ones. It's a suit, so it's by definition a bit boring, but even so...

  26. I dunno....besides the obvious horribleness, there were a couple of OK things....I bookmarked 1160 and 1162 as possibilities.

After looking at the line art I can see the apron patterns being adjusted into skirts/dresses pretty easily - that blue and green patterned one would be awesome as a summer sundress.

Since I'm already backed up on projects and recently got a subscription to Burda magazine (at $8 and change per copy, it's WELL worth it in my mind) I just can't get too excited about patterns these days...sad, I know!

  27. I adore that suit. I've been stressing at the prospect of having to wear more suits in my job. I am so against them and hate them as a rule. But that one - that one I can get behind. Especially the skirt.

  28. Apparently the new 'thing' all the cool kids are doing is wearing cute little aprons as skirts, but with jeans or pants underneath. So the apron is an accessory. I got myself an adorable mini-pleated apron from Cafe Society, but have yet to boldly go that apron route outside of my kitchen...

  29. I love the 8460 but it is not made for gals like me (pear shaped). The gray suit is very pretty and I'm interested to see what color you make that in... the dress is pretty but really not my style. I just started getting the Vogue patterns magazine last month and I really like their helpful hints on what bodytype something would look good on... I've always had a problem with that! LOL
