Self-Portrait with Trash Can

I've been playing around with hot rollers quite a bit lately, so I thought I would document my hair today. Why? I don't know. Maybe I wanted to capture this special moment I'm sharing with the trash can in my office.

The real news, though is that I have finally found a set of hot rollers that I love!

They're made by Babyliss, and they're fantastic. Lots of different sizes, and they get nice and hot. The curls last all day for me. Please don't buy these, a crappy set from Remington. Seriously! They MELTED when I heated them up. What the what? (As Liz Lemon would say.)

  1. You look gorgeous! I've tried hot-rollers, but they make my look like a hot frizz mess. Any tips? How exactly do you do your look? Thanks!

  2. Babyliss is a great brand. I have their curling iron and am so happy with it. When I had long hair the curls would last all day. Now that I have short hair I use it to give my 'do shape and body. Works great. The titanium used to make them is supposed to be better for your hair.

  3. Anytime I read the reviews on the hot rollers at Target, they crack me up. Everyone says, "They were so hot!"... They are hot rollers!

    But melting, that SUCKS.

I just found your blog through my Mom, and you've given me a lot of inspiration to wear red lipstick and sew something vintage. I look forward to your posts every day!

  6. I second (third?) the whining for a tutorial! I bought hot rollers because my sister did my hair with them once and it looked AMAZING...but my sister is a trained makeup artist. Every time I've tried them I've ended up with a faux perm. What are you doing to make it look so awesome??

  9. This post cracks me up because I spent most of my life doing hot rollers. Before that (yes, I'm old) it was pink sponge rollers, or those bristle ones that were secured with a pick. Clairol made our first set, and I currently have set underneath my bathroom sink that I'll never get rid of--I love them, but my hair's too short now to use them.

You look great today--love your blog!

  11. As I said on my blog the other day, your hair's been looking pretty darn snazzy lately, Gertie! And a hot roller tutorial would make this gal squeal with glee. As you know, I'm trying to get out of my hair rut and I only have experience with curling irons and those old pink sponge rollers. Please please tell us about your new hot rollers? Thanks!

  14. Aw, thanks guys! I'll get to work on a little video tutorial. I'm not an expert, but I've learned some tips that have been a big help. I'd love to share them with you!

I think my fave look so far is victory rolls. I just can't get enough of them. I think they look really rock and roll. Maybe that's just me. :)

Amy, I use setting lotion (LottaBody) for wet sets and a thermal spray (Tresemme brand) for hot sets.

  15. I agree with the previous writers, it’s a great look! Perhaps you can show us how you do your victory rolls as well? I have watched a couple of the tutorials on youtube and some looks lovely but more suitable for masquerade. There’s something about your hairdos that make them look so wareable, you look really classy and beautiful.
