Saturday Set

You know what I love about the weekends? (Besides the obvious.) I can try really weird things with my hair sets and not worry about it looking totally freaky for work the next day. This look is a result of trying several different methods of wet curls, all in one set. I had some rag curls, large pin curls, and upright pin curls all going on it one shebang. No method to the madness really. But here's my question: why does this often turn out better than when I'm very methodical with my sets? That's life, I guess.

I was really aiming to get some good height on the bang portion, which I definitely succeeded in. This was a result of small pin curls rolled and set so they were standing up rather than smooshed down against my head. They weren't affected by sleeping on them at all, since I don't sleep face-down. (Do you? That's weird.) I should also metion that I haven't washed my hair in seven days and that I used a heck of a lot of LottaBody setting lotion. After brushing out the curls, I then finished the bangs off with some dry shampoo, which not only gets rid of greasiness, it helps with body and hold as well, since you can really get some good product build-up going on.

Yeah, I'm probably due for a good hairwash. Guess I know what I'm doing tonight. Sorry, boys! I'm busy washing my hair.

  1. I like your hair like that. It's the perfect combination of then and now. It's funny that you used LottaBody. I did my hair this morning and used it too!

  4. Gorgeous, Gertie! You look divine!

Too many people overwash their hair. I only wash mine every 2-3 days.

  5. Gertie, you look magnificent, as usual. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind telling us how you use the LottaBody? I just bought some for the first time two days ago. I was planning on mixing it with the recommended amount of water and putting it in a spray bottle, then spraying it on. Is that how you do it?? Do tell.

  7. amazingly cute and gorgeous! Even though this hairdo is a bit fuzzy, I like it. I have to admit though, that blow-drying my hair every day is the most I can be bothered every day. Then again, the curse of having short hair, is that you have to style it more or less every day. You are gorgeous, Gertie! I hope you know, but I'll tell you again and again!

  10. Thanks, ladies! Josephine, for the LottaBody, I follow the directions on the bottle for diluting it, and spray it on my hair until it's damp. If I need more while I'm setting the curls, I spray some directly on the ends of the strands - that's where I like to concentrate it. Hope that helps!

  13. Hi! I just wanted to say that I just found your blog yesterday and have obsessively read all of the back entries. I am so inspired! I also am a home sewer who loves vintage and vintage inspired clothing (currently making a wool suit from the 1940s) and I love the stuff you are making. I actually just ordered myself a copy of Vogue's New Book for Better Sewing, plus I'm using your pattern to make myself a petticoat (thank you so much for the tutorial, it is super clear and easy to follow!). Anyways, I'm excited to keep following your blog and see what you do next! :)

  14. You look gorgeous! Funnily enough, my more haphazard sets are the ones that turn out the best too. haha! One question for you: do you dilute the LottaBody any? I've been using it lately, and diluted it according to the package directions (being afraid of having scary, crunchy hair! lol), but it doesn't really hold like I envisioned it (maybe my hair is stubborn), so I was wondering what you do?

  15. I do think when we plan 'anything' we have expectations, and when we just let loose and 'go', it somehow just turns out so much better. I got the rollers you recommended, they came in Saturday and I'm LOVING them. Same on the lipstick. Plus I'm sewing again thanks to you (and getting through knee replacement surgery which took a ton of pain from my entire body)! You rock lady, and are a gift to all of us out here who have to remind outselves to have fun with life. So from someone who's been in a fog (chemo, steroids, body pain) for 3 yrs and coming out, your blog has been medicine for my soul. THANK YOU.

You had a blog awhile ago about beauty and all that, and I don't think that it is conforming to someone's ideal but rather letting yoursel 'be' who you are, male, female, it is about letting one's happines show through however we want. With curly hair and cool clothes or in legging and an old comfy shirt. We ARE.

  16. Hi Gertie- You look GORGEOUS! I too have been experimenting with pin curls and haven't gotten the same result twice. You should really do a tutorial on how you did this particular set. If others are like me, a visual is sometimes what's needed to really figure out how to do it. Question, how many pincurls did you do in the front bangs? I know you said you stood them up, but did you roll them toward your forehead or the other direction?
