Buttons, Glorious Buttons!

Is it possible to be in love with a button? Because I think I am. I received my coat buttons from Pat's Custom Buttons and Belts yesterday, and they are AMAZING.

As you may recall, I was having trouble choosing between the half ball button and the combination flat button. I was so gripped by indecision that I ended up ordering a set of each. The way I figure it, it wouldn't hurt to have an extra set of buttons for my coat, right? I also had the backs lined with my polka dot charmeuse coat lining, thanks to the ingenious suggestion of one of you lovely readers.

Here's a close-up of the combination flat:

And here's the half ball:

I'm definitely leaning towards one of them, but I'm not going to make up my mind for sure until I see them on the finished coat.

But I just had to share them with you. Aren't they indeed glorious? Don't they make you want to marry Pat, the custom button-maker? (Or is that just me?) In any case, I once again highly recommend Pat's Custom Buttons and Belts. I sent my order form and fabric to her on November 3oth, and received my beautiful buttons back on December 8th! And that's including mail time from New York to California and back. How does she do it? See my post with all her information here.

  1. There is nothing like self-covered buttons. I think they are fantastic and I am sooo glad that Pat rescued all the equipment so that we have a selection of styles for them. And I'm still sticking to the combo buttons - I think they look absolutely fab.

  3. Oh yes... falling madly, head-over-heels in love with buttons is quite possible. I do it all the time! haha! Those buttons are real beauties--the idea of matching buttons is just so fun! :) I especially love the super-custom touch of adding the polka dot accent! :D

  4. Wow. Gorgeous. I was expecting a shank, though -- do you sew right through?

I just love the lining on the back. What a coat this will be.

  5. Lol! A love affair with buttons, I too have been down that road... =)
They're all gorgeous! And the lining! How clever! You realise you're going to have to make a second coat, using the set of buttons you don't use this time? ;) At least, that's what they would be calling to me... A shorter, jacket for spring/autumn?

They're beautiful! I love the polka dot lining.

I love your blog btw. I'm a new reader :)

  7. Yes I am also confused how to sew those without a shank on as well.

  8. Yes, I agree, you CAN fall in love with buttons! and fabric and ribbons and yarn and lace....etc. At least that's what I tell myself. I understand your indecision 'cause both of those button styles are great! The lining is an excellent touch!

  9. Oh! I forgot to mention: they DO have a shank, it's just hidden under the lining. You sew through the lining to get to the shank, if that makes any sense.

  10. They're superb, and I'm so glad you had the bottom lined!

Of course, I'm not a good seamstress enough to make a coat, but If I were I'd go to the local 'plisseur' to have the same done. At my humble level, I simply make a contrasting hong-kong finish on my first pencil skirts. It's really a little detail, but it really makes me smile each time I see it.

What's not to love about these sewing details?

  13. Self-covered buttons made my life different, so I'm not surprised about your feelings towards them... I wonder if Pat offers international help... They truly look great, and I'm also dreaming about those buckles. The lining is perfect, it dots the i!

  14. You totally did the right thing in ordering both styles of the buttons. You can have a theoretical opinion, but there is no substitute for actually looking. Those little polka dots are adorable.

  15. Worth the wait! Both will be great, but the combination ones are still my favourites. It is definitely possible to fall in love with buttons and other 'notions'!

  18. Those buttons are stunningly gorgeous - I like both styles and would be quite undecided about which to choose. Pat clearly does a fantastic job but as for getting married I think you should stick with with your dashing dude, Jeff!

  19. OH they are gorgeous! I knew you can have button covered, but I did not know they could come in so many shapes, and that you could choose the fabric underneath as well. That is luxury!

  20. Oh, those are beautiful. I'm not sure I could make up my mind; they both look glorious! The lining on the back is a genius idea.

  21. I also would go with the half rounds. I think they look more professional where the flats look more like home sewing to me. Fantastic idea.

  22. OMG those are like little gems, little works of art. I would have a seriously hard time deciding between the two; sorry I can't help you there!

As for "Is it possible to fall in love with buttons..." oh my yes. I do it all the time and design new sewing projects around them!

  23. SO NICE! Getting covered buttons made professionally makes all the difference doesn't it?! The result is much nicer than those DIY kits.

  24. I've accumulated TONS of vintage and modern buttons over the years. While babysitting I had my 5 year old nephew start sorting them by color and he said, "Auntie you have a LOT of buttons." I said we should put them in the bathtub and go for a swim in them and his eyes just lit up and he said, "YEA let's swim in the buttons!" So yes, you can fall in love with buttons. Had I not had a five year old with me, I'd've skinnydipped in 'em - that's how much I love 'em.

  25. Those are very cool buttons. I love covered buttons. I don't think I want to marry Pat, but maybe live with him as long as he brings his buttons along!

  30. 75% certain about the half-rounds. 100% certain about the polka dot lining!

Will look forward to seeing which button wins (and how it all comes together!).
