But I'd already been spoiled on the winner, and am also quite disappointed. I'd thought for sure during the whole season that Mondo would take it. And I'd found his style really refreshing, with his print mixes and quirky designs. Whereas Gretchen's was all blah blah neutrals blah shapeless blah. Style aside, though, I really have not liked Gretchen as a person. At all. Her bossy know-it-allness aside, the clincher was in the final elimination where she was going on about how worried she was about Michael C. after he got eliminated--she'd been one of his biggest critics through the whole season, the two-faced hypocrite.

But then, I really didn't like Christian Siriano as a person either, and he won. (Though I could understand why he did--I'm not a fan of his style, but he did definitely have one.) So meh. I guess fashion design isn't about being a decent person anyway. I'm going to go get ready to do some cutting out. Closest I've gotten to real sewing in awhile. :P

On a rather unrelated note, since I've enjoyed reading your couture technique posts so much--I've been doing a little googling and a little reading through my Claire Schaeffer couture book, but I haven't been able to find much information and figured I'd ask-- do you know of any special techniques or resources for how to apply those techniques to a knit fabric? I finally have reason to make an LBD and I found a great pattern yesterday that calls for silk jersey. (Along with a couple of wovens, which I don't get, but I want to use the jersey so I can dress it up or down easier.) I'd love to do this right and make a really good-quality dress, but I'm really not sure if things need to be handled differently to account for a stretchier, non-woven fabric. Or if it's even possible to make a couture knit dress! I'll happily take any suggestions you have. :)Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09913795373618902575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3259455441759015869.post-57352102414922806052010-10-30T00:14:46.858-04:002010-10-30T00:14:46.858-04:00sownbrooklyn - I completely agree. I love Mondo's work, and I don't neccessarily see it as the punk rock fashion that was pumped out by my sister city season winner, but I guess it goes to show that you can't win on talent to construct alone.
balcsgirl- I was stunned when Michael C. was cut out of Fashion Week. I liked his clothes much more than Gretchen's. But I don't personally like Gretchen as a person- why did they always show her opinion on the show? Was it because she was so outspoken about it? It felt like after the first show and she won, she thought that she was the authority on fashion, clothes making, etc. Was that just the way she was portrayed by the producers? But, go easy on Jessica Simpson, she just gained weight, which is GOOD! Men would rather have a fat good looking chick, than a skinny ugly chick! LOL
flyskim- my daughter saw those panties and said "Mom, she can't wear those! She needs a skirt!" haha, gotta love a four year old. I'm so disappointed in Lifetime though but only because they decided not to air the show twice like they did last season. That meant for this west coaster that I had to either tape it for later, or reschedule my whole evening at 6pm to watch the 1hour 30 minute show. I LOVED that it was more than an hour though, yes? anyone?
Kate- well spoken, thank you for your refreshing point of view.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13859775678572481531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3259455441759015869.post-4447143721413231482010-10-29T22:58:29.072-04:002010-10-29T22:58:29.072-04:00I think Mondo will have the last laugh. I just read Gretchen's interview with StyleList, and unfortunately, she came off rather tactless and arrogant...pretty much the impression she gave us of herself all season.

I do think that Mondo has a different clientele than Gretchen. And while there is a wider commerical audience for the work Gretchen does, it's too 'everyday' for a 'great' new designer.

I don't have anything against Chico's or catalog wear, but since this is apparently the new direction Project Runway has settled for, then I don't need to waste anymore time watching the show. Yes, she has a challenging personality that has turned people off to her overall, but her clothing was well designed, and she should be given credit for her talents if not her personality. After all, she couldn't possibly be more challenging than, say, Michael Kors or Heidi Klum, both of who give Gretchen a run for her money in the over-confident jerk category. Both collections had merit. Mondo is a talented and interesting designer.
